I read something interesting the other day to the effect that the country with the most Nobel Prize winners (Sweden) also has the highest per capita milk consumption. This may seem strange because of all the negative press that milk drinking has gotten lately.

But consider that most of the problems with commercial milk are due to pasteurization. When you heat milk you denature the proteins and destroy the beneficial enzymes and bacteria in it.

This bacteria is said to be beneficial to your digestive system, which in turn has a direct affect on your brain. Researchers on the cutting edge of nutrition and health have discovered that having the right balance of healthy bacteria in the colon is essential to making your brain work properly.

One of the best ways of doing this is drinking raw milk! This is controversial because so called “health authorities” have convinced people that raw milk is unhealthy and dangerous, which is completely untrue.

However it must come from clean dairy farms with healthy clean cows, and not from factory farms where overcrowding of animals and use of hormones and antibiotics contribute to an unhealthy environment for dairy cows.

I am going to purchase raw milk and report back to you on my experiences with it. Many adults are supposedly lactose intolerant, but my guess is that part of this problem stems from the pasteurization process and it’s effect on the milk.

There is so much focus on probiotics now that they are being mainstreamed and sol in supermarkets in the form of products like Activia and promoted in commercial yogurt, which unfortunately is also pasteurized.

Raw unpasteurized (and unhomogenized) milk is the real deal and if we ever are able to turn back the laws and regulations that are being used to stamp out raw milk, I think we will see a new super food available to the public once more.

You won’t look at regular pasteurized milk and other dairy products the same way again. Pasteurization is heat treatment that damages and denatures the milk. This kills ALL of the bacteria, good and bad.

This explains why so many people seem to show allergic reactions to pasteurized milk products.

If you have never heard Bruce Hornsby play or seen him in person, I urge you to do so. I think he is the most unique and expressive pianist on popular music today. He would never be considered a great vocalist, but his music will inspire and delight anyone lucky enough to hear it.

This is a 36 minute set at the Stone Mountain Performance Center in Brownfield, Maine. He excels at these smaller venues. There are elements of country music, pop, jazz, classical, bluegrass, swing, ect. in his playing. Although he is considered a pop musician there’s a strong country feel to his music.

His piano solos are legendary and often encompass several musical styles (classical, jazz, country) all in the same musical piece. The lyrics of the songs are often about people, places, and things he grew up around in his native Virginia. Hope you enjoy this as much as I do!

Age Better #25 – When healthcare really isn’t healthy

When I first started to write this newsletter, I vowed NOT to make it
political, but I do want to say some things about our healthcare system,
why I feel it’s going in the wrong direction, and what you can do to
protect YOUR health from the healthcare system.

The American healthcare system is based first on profit! Now there’s
nothing wrong with profit. We are a capitalist system, and the object of
any private business is to make money. But there are ethical and moral
standards that I believe should always apply.

Our healthcare system is based on treating symptoms of disease with
patented drugs, rather than identifying the causes of disease and
eliminating them. The government subsidizes junk food companies that make
the products that contribute to disease.

This is why I am always dubious of the idea that government can improve the
health of citizens, when in fact it promotes the very things that make us
unhealthy. The good news is that you don’t have to be a victim of the
medical system.

You can keep yourself out of the medical system, and safeguard your health
for many years to come, if you do these three things:

Get 15 minutes of vigorous exercise at least 3 times per week

Get 8 hours of sound sleep every night (preferably getting to bed before
midnight)

Keep sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and trans fats to an absolute minimum
in your diet

Most health problems and chronic diseases have the same underlying cause,
and that’s inflammation. All the strategies I mentioned above will help
decrease inflammation and lead to better health. It’s not rocket science,
but lots of people still over-think it.

Don’t avoid or put off doing these things because you can’t do them
perfectly or you can’t ALWAYS do them. Nothing people do is perfect, but
just do the best you can, and you will be miles ahead of where most people
are!

Vaccines are a big business these days and they are currently being
“pushed” on the public at every turn. This is because they are a huge
moneymaker for the drug industry, but there is very little evidence that
they actually protect your health.

Also, the US Supreme Court has rules that vaccine companies are immune from
lawsuits for any damages their vaccines cause to your health. So you have
no legal protections from these vaccines and their effects.

What protects you from disease is a strong immune system, but some of the
ingredients in these vaccines actually weaken the immune system which
leaves you vulnerable to diseases.

My late mother used to get “flu shots” every year, and every year she
got the flu. They never prevented the flu in her case because her immune
system was weak. She trusted the doctors who pushed the flu shot, but sadly
they were wrong and her trust was misplaced.

If you are being urged to get “vaccinated” push back on these medical
people and demand they show you real scientifically documented evidence
that the vaccine is safe and effective. My guess is that they will not be
able to because the evidence isn’t there.

This is especially true where vaccination of children is concerned. The
autism rate for children at one time was 1 in 10,000. Now it is 1 in 88,
and is actually more like 1 in 55 or so among males children.

Autism rates have pretty much paralleled the increase in vaccinations given
children, and while that’s not proof that autism is caused by vaccines, it
is a very suspicious “co-incidence!”

The bottom line is that you should be very cautious about ANYTHING a
medical person wants to inject into your body OR your child’s body. You are
ultimately responsible for your health and the health of your children.

For this reason you should always “do your research” on vaccines or any
other drug that doctors want to give you! Don’t let the “system” profit
at the expense of your health!

On a lighter note, the new Iron Man film is coming out on May 3rd.
Interestingly, they are showing a different version in China, perhaps in
part because the “The Mandarin” (the villain in the film), is Chinese,
but is being played by British actor Ben Kingsly.

I love the sci-fi/techno aspects of the film, and of course Robert Downey
Jr. is perfect to play Tony Stark! I read the comics when I was a kid, and
it’s kind of exciting to be seeing these stories adapted to the big screen,
using modern special effects that make it all seem so real!

I will do a review on this film when it comes out and i’ve seen it, but it will
probably be the sci-fi hit of the year.

This weeks musical clip is one of my very favorites, and has a special
meaning for me. This song called “Sweet Baby” by George Duke and
Stanley Clark came out in 1981. It was the year that I won the US nationals
in Powerlifting.

I had a hard training cycle for that contest and had to lose over 20 pounds
in a weeks time to make weight for the contest. When I arrived in Boise
Idaho for the championships this beautiful and upbeat song was the first
thing I heard playing as I rode in the limo to my hotel.

It was a nice June Idaho evening, and all my fears and uncertainty about
the upcoming contest, just evaporated in the cool night air. I just knew
greats things would happen for me that weekend…and they did!

Age Better Newsletter #17:  How Stress Kills…

I wish I had a dollar for each time I’ve heard that “stress kills.” But
very few people actually understand how and why this is true and what can
be done about it.

We’ve all experienced being under stress, but now I’m going to explain just
how it does damage!

When you are under stress your body pumps out a hormone called
“cortisol,” that is your body’s natural form of  the anti-inflammatory cortisone.

For a short period of time this is not a problem, but if it lasts and is chronic,
it causes big problems.

What kind of problems? How about:

Diabetes
Heart Disease
Cancer
Alzheimer’s Disease
Strokes

All these result from inflammation and something called “oxidative
stress.” You get a double whammy here. Damage from cortisol and also
damage from inflammation well as oxidative stress.

Cortisol is a response by your body to stress which in pre-historic times
meant physical danger. It prepares your body to fight or flee, by raising
your blood sugar to supply the necessary energy to cope with the danger.

Over time if cortisol stays high, it starts breaking down your tissues to
convert them into glucose (sugar.)  It can break down muscle tissue, bone,
and even shrink your brain!

Oxidative stress interferes with energy production in mitochondria which
damages your DNA. This can lead to heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and
cancer.

OK, we know it’s bad, but what do we do?  Stress management has 3 parts:

Eliminate the stressor (the thing causing the stress) – I would suggest
trying the “speed trace” which is mentioned on my page about stress.

Restore balance to the autonomic nervous system – “body grounding” is
great for this, and is also mentioned on my stress page

Protect against inflammation – eat a low or no grain diet, get omega 3
fats, and antioxidants in your food and in supplement form

This is a really important topic and probably needs an ebook to deal with
it adequately. This is something I will be writing at some point in the
future.

The good news is that a few simple strategies will put you on the path to
less stress and more health and happiness!

I have a couple of cool products to recommend for a bit more energy and
focus. However if you have any heart health issues, I would check with your
doctor before taking them.

These products affect something called the “cholinergic system” which
is involved with all aspects of your mental performance like thinking and
memory.

Neither product contains caffeine or other stimulants. But again…you
should check with your doctor if you are older, have a medical condition,
or are on any medications, just to be on the safe side.

I watched a great film on Youtube this week called “Seven Days in May.”
It’s loosely based on an allegedly true story of an attempted overthrow of
the United States government.

The film was released in1964, and starred Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster,
Ava Gardner, and Fredrick March. Rod Serling wrote the excellent
screenplay and John Frankenheimer directed it.

It’s alleged that the Pentagon didn’t want the film made, but JFK actually
believed that such a scenario was possible given the same circumstances,
and actually allowed the film company to shoot outside the White House.

Whether you believe a scenario like this is far fetched or not, it’s a great
film with great performances by these legendary actors. Do yourself a
favor and watch “Seven Days in May.” I know you will enjoy it!

It’s taken me all of my adult life to figure out that happiness comes from the
knowledge that I am moving forward, and that the future can be better than
the past if only I have the courage to press on to achieve my dreams.

I feel that we are living through some scary and difficult times. It’s easy
to get caught up in the cycle of negativity and I have been guilty of this
myself.

I think the key is to focus on what you want to accomplish and
continually move towards it no matter what!
