I got a message from a young woman who had written to me years ago after visiting my antiaging website and asking me for advice for a health problem she was having. She was told she had a thyroid problem but through her own research found out she was misdiagnosed!

She had been put on Omprazole, which is a “proton pump inhibitor” which decreases stomach acid. This can cause malabsorption of food, and she had to fight her doctor to get the tests that indicated that she had vitamin deficiencies.

She was on Omeprazoe for years, and she learned this drug should only be taken for several weeks. She was misdiagnosed and improperly prescribed medication. It was only  through her own research and efforts that she is now on the road to recovery.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you have to do your own medical research to make sure your doctors diagnosis and advice is valid, but in many cases that’s what it comes down to. Nobody has as much interest in your health as YOU do!

Don’t assume that you are incapable of understanding things about your health. That’s the biggest mistake you can make! This is how the pharmaceutical industry has become so powerful and abusive. You can and MUST take an active role in protecting your health!

Ordinary people don’t trust in their own intelligence and intuitive wisdom to take control of their own health decisions. It’s always about the newest wonder drug or prescription they see peddled on TV , and they mistakenly assume this is the way to be healthier.

There are a few prescription drugs that are actually helpful in the short term because they control symptoms and allow people to function on a day to day basis. However the vast majority of these drugs are both dangerous and unnecessary, and more and more practicing physicians are coming to the same conclusion.

If your doctor refuses to listen to your concerns or chastises you for trying to learn more about your body and how it functions, then it’s time to find another physician. A good doctor will welcome a patient that is actively engaged in their own health decisions!

The Internet can be a great place to find information, but of course you have to use your head and sort out the bad information from the good. There are a number of good websites where you can find accurate and up to date information. I will list a few of these below:

I was about to say that fall is approaching, but in fact, it’s already here! Temperatures are dropping and it’s that time of year when people often get colds because they forget to dress warmly enough.

Yes I know about all the “scientific evidence” that supposedly disproves the idea that people “catch cold” because they don’t dress warmly enough, but my own personal experience seems to suggest otherwise.

The body is very sensitive to changes in it’s environment and this can have effects that you are not aware of. Take some time to evaluate your clothing going into fall and winter. Make sure you dress warmly and comfortably at all times.

Body heat is body energy…remember that! When you lose body heat you lose the energy your body needs for vital functions like your immune system and your hormonal system. Energy in the form of ATP is the “currency” of your day to day health. Preserve it!

Remember, ALWAYS dress warmly, preserve your precious energy for needed body functions, not warming the outside environment! The Earth has plenty of energy, it doesn’t need more from your body!

I can’t give a specific recommendation for thermal and cold weather wear because I am not an expert, but from what I have found online rial polypropylene is considered the best for outdoors.

Do some research on the web and get some good quality winter wear for both outside and inside. You will feel better and stay healthier!

For people who are into musical theater, Steven Sondheim is a magical name! This is one of Sonheim’s best songs sung by none other than Bernadette Peters. She becomes emotionally overwhelmed during the performance.

I believe this is because some years ago she lost her husband in a helicopter accident. It almost seemed like the orchestra kind of marked time a bit to allow her to recover her composure and finish the song. This is truly a heartfelt performance.

Where did our summer go? Seems like we are in the fall already! While I won’t complain about the mild weather, I remember that years ago it stayed hot through the first couple of weeks in September. We called it “Indian Summer, but it seems we don’t get that anymore.

I spent the weekend helping my young cousin Remy Anne move into her new student apartment in Boston. She will be taking courses at Northeastern University (my Alma Mater). Time passes very quickly these days. It seems like only yesterday when she arrived in Boston with her folks for the first time, ready to begin studying dance at Boston Ballet!

Now I get prime seats along with her parents to watch her perform on the stage, which is

After one of her performances at the Boston Ballet, I noticed my cousin Remy had this long plastic cylinder under her arm. When I asked her what it was, she told me it was a “foam roller.”

I know what they are, in fact I have one myself, but her’s was hollow unlike my own. I hadn’t seen the newer ones so it kinda threw me off a bit. Anyway…seeing her reminded me that I needed to use mine more often. Foam rollers are cylinders made of hard plastic foam that you literately roll over to loosen tight muscles.

For those of you who cannot afford frequent massage therapy treatments,  foam roller can be just the thing to keep you more flexible and supple. You can get them online and they are relatively cheap.

I would recommend them highly as one of the most cost effective therapies available to the average person. The link below is to the model that I bought, and one I found works really well for me.

Nothing special about this one, pretty plain, but as I say relatively inexpensive for the benefits you can get from it. You don’t have to purchase any particular model, just so long as it is hard foam.

There are newer designs with knobs and protrusions on the surface. I can’t say whether these are better, because I have never used them, but they might be worth a shot. The idea is to put pressure on the tender areas because those are where the adhesions in the muscle are.

Adhesions are the result of scar tissue from what we call “micro traumas.” These are little tears in the muscle that when they heal, they often adhere to what’s called the “fascia.” Fascia is the protective sleeve or sheath around your muscles.

The muscles need to move smoothly beneath the fascia, and if they don’t because if these adhesions, then you get pain and restriction of movement. The foam roller tends to break up this scar tissue and free the adhesions, thus making you more supple.

You just basically get on the floor with the muscle you want to work resting on the foam roller. You roll over the roller until you find a spot that really hurts when you roll over it. At that point you just keep rolling back and forth across that sore spot until the pain subsides. When the pain subsides, that would be an indication that the adhesion has been freed.

Please keep in mind that this is NOT a substitute for proper medical care! If you have acute (really sharp) pain in an area that does not go away, your safest bet is to see a doctor, such as an orthopedic practitioner. They can either confirm or rule out anything serious.

The foam roller is really for long term stiffness or tenderness in an area that is the result of accumulated micro trauma from sports or exercise that happens over time. As far as learning HOW to use the foam roller, go to Youtube and search on foam roller, or foam roller exercise and you can choose any one of a number of instructional video clips.

Use of a foam roller is one of THE BEST things you can do to feel more flexible, supple, and lose that constant tightness that you may be feeling as a result of age, exercise, or trauma!

Follow the money! That’s the advice my lawyer used to give me for trying to make sense out of the actions of government and politicians. Always question the policies that are being advocated, and try to find who benefits and why.

You can apply this to everything that happens in society, but in our case we need to apply it to  an understanding of public health policy and what really drives it. I see thing almost daily in the media that I know instinctively are wrong.

For instance that fish oil is supposedly dangerous, vitamin supplements are worthless, vaccines are safe, cholesterol drugs make you healthier ect.  There is an agenda that underlies all these statements, that involves powerful corporate interests and money.

Usually these issues are brought to light by what we call “muckrakers” which are people who expose corporate wrongdoing and public malfeasance. There is always an element of doubt in their claims because they are usually outsiders who are not part of the industries they are criticizing.

Every once in a while someone comes along who has inside knowledge of an industry and it’s abuses, and steps up to blow the whistle on the corruption they witness around them. Such an individual is Dr. John Abramson M.D.

Dr. Abramson estimates that approximately 80% of prescription drug use in the United States is unnecessary! Yes…that’s right…80%! Dr. Abramson took a year off from his medical practice to research and write a book about this.

This book was rated 5 stars over 82 reader reviews, some of those five star reviews were from other doctors! Pretty impressive. It lays bare the dirty secrets of the pharmaceutical industry, how it unduly influences medicine, misinforms doctors, and needlessly puts patients at risk.

In this book you will learn how drug companies hid some of the facts about the side effects of their drugs as “trade secrets.” This means that your doctor could potentially prescribe a drug to you that has side effects that he or she does not even know about!

You will also learn how the drug industry funds the very research being done to determine whether their products are safe and effective. This is a clear conflict of interest that Dr. Abramson exposes in his book!

Doctor Abramson is a family practice physician from Massachusetts, who is affiliated with Harvard Medical School and has solid mainstream medical credentials. This fact makes the revelations in the book all the more convincing.

You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to read this book. Armed with facts and the truth, you can make better decisions about your health care and the role of prescription medications in it.

I love science fiction, especially the “super hero” genre. I just saw the “man of Steel” the 2013 version of the Superman saga. I had heard pro and con about this film, but I have to say I was quite impressed by this film.

The film was directed by Zack Snyder and stars Henry Cavill as Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Cavill’s Superman though different than Chris Reeves, retains the essence of who and what Superman is.

He presents a deeply principled individual of great power who understands the necessity of restraint. He is (just like Chris Reeves) the consummate gentleman, who puts the well being of others before himself. This is the kind of selfless persona that you expect from this character.

Lois Lane played by Amy Adams is a far cry from the previous versions of that character. She is tough and resourceful in her own way and gets into the action, helping Superman escape from captivity by General Zod.  Adams in my view does a great job with this iconic character!

The action sequences are mind blowing thanks to state of the art CGI. The villains (General Zod and company) seem harsher and more violent than in past films, and the ending which I will not give away, follows this pattern.

If you are up for a good time at the movies, I would highly recommend “Man of Steel.” It’s great fun and will not disappoint.

Do you remember Vanessa Williams? She was the first “black” Miss America and had to give up the title because it was found that she had posed nude years before, and the pictures surfaced and caused a scandal.

She rebounded from this experience to become the most successful entertainer of any former Miss America.

As I sit here in the middle of June,  it is a comfortable 65 degrees in Somerville, and while I am not complaining, I don’t remember it being this cool so late in the season when I was a kid.

I honestly think we are entering an era of cooler weather, but then again, it’s hard to tell. I like the fact that I haven’t even put my air conditioners in yet…it’s been that comfortable. I do hope it continues, although I am sure we will be in for some sweltering days soon.

I’d like to mention a few things I think are important in the area of health and wellness. These are things that if you do them, you will have 80-90% of the health issues covered. For those that want to do 100%, that’s great, but start with the basics.

With that said here are three things you should do to live longer, and healthier.

Get enough vitamin-d in winter and summer. Vitamin-d is not really a vitamin, it’s a hormone called cholcalciferol. It’s used in many critical processes in your body, and if you don’t get enough of it your risk for things like cancer and heart disease go up!

People of African ancestry that live in cooler climates are especially vulnerable to deficiencies in vitamin-d because their darker skin filters out the UV light the body needs to bio-synthesize this critical hormone.

Avoid refined sugar in all forms. This includes high fructose corn syrup, Agave nectar, maltodextrin, ect. Sugar raises blood glucose levels, which in turn raise insulin levels. Insulin is a “pro-inflammatory” hormone that significantly raises your risk for cancer, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.

Processed foods are largely a form of refined sugar, since they are mostly grain products that break down rapidly in your blood stream, spiking your blood sugar and insulin levels which in turn aggravate inflammation and promote chronic disease.

I think that grounding or “Earthing” should be a very important part of your daily routine. Think of grounding as receiving antioxidants from the Earth all of the time you are grounded, and you will see why this practice is so important.

Grounding helps you establish the proper electromagnetic balance in your body, which protects you from free radical damage and slows down the aging process. There is probably no single thing that is more beneficial to you than grounding.

You might wonder why I didn’t mention things like getting enough sleep, and exercise, but truthfully, if you do the above 3 things, you will likely be able to sleep a lot better. As far as exercise, most people do it incorrectly and that can have negative results.

Exercise has two real benefits, that it controls blood sugar, and helps maintain muscle and bone density. If you avoid sugar, and get into the habit of grounding every day, this will go a long way toward controlling blood sugar.

It will also help maintain the function of your endocrine glands, which produce the anabolic hormones that maintain your muscle tissue. So all exercise really does is to signal your hormonal system to produce certain hormones.

Don’t get me wrong, exercise (if done right) is still valuable, but if you do the other things mentioned, you will remain HEALTHY and ACTIVE for all of your life, and thus will be getting your exercise in the process, and that’s the key!

As I write this a parade, our local  “Memorial Day Parade” is passing right by my doorstep. It’s a reminder that we honor those who have made sacrifices for our country, for it’s liberty and sovereignty.

That spirit of self sacrifice is absolutely essential for ANY free society to survive and prosper. It seems to be sadly lacking in our present day, and we would be wise to understand that without it, we can’t survive as a nation or as a civilization.

At the end of the day, it’s not about parades, cookouts, or fireworks, but about the commitment each of us has to act with integrity and honor in everything we do. That’s the only thing that can turn this country around. It’s what we owe not only to our veterans, but to each other as well!

Sometimes we think we KNOW things because we have heard them so many times we reason that they MUST be true! This is the case with the myth of “cholesterol and heart disease.” I call it a myth, because it rests on a foundation of faulty science and dangerous half-truths.

When I was young (around 10 years old), there was a television series called “One Step Beyond” which was about the supernatural that scared me quite a bit. I remember that the music and the narrator seemed very creepy to me, and the stories were said to be true!

In fact even now at age 58, when I hear the music, I still get goosebumps.  There was no blood and gore in this program, but it managed to get under my skin in a big way. It scared you not with violence, blood or monsters, but by suggestion and mystery.

I enjoy sharing the musical artists I have found online with you. There’s so much awesome talent out there that has yet to be “mainstreamed” and discovered by a wider audience. So many gems to be found, and enjoyed.

Also, music is a form of sound, which has positive energy and is healthy for the body. Did you know for instance that conductors of orchestras have the longest life spans of ANY profession?

Part of the reason is the way they use their arms which is a very healthy way to exercise, and reduce their risk of heart disease. The other is that they work doing something they absolutely love each and every day…MUSIC!

Age Better #25 – When healthcare really isn’t healthy

When I first started to write this newsletter, I vowed NOT to make it
political, but I do want to say some things about our healthcare system,
why I feel it’s going in the wrong direction, and what you can do to
protect YOUR health from the healthcare system.

The American healthcare system is based first on profit! Now there’s
nothing wrong with profit. We are a capitalist system, and the object of
any private business is to make money. But there are ethical and moral
standards that I believe should always apply.

Our healthcare system is based on treating symptoms of disease with
patented drugs, rather than identifying the causes of disease and
eliminating them. The government subsidizes junk food companies that make
the products that contribute to disease.

This is why I am always dubious of the idea that government can improve the
health of citizens, when in fact it promotes the very things that make us
unhealthy. The good news is that you don’t have to be a victim of the
medical system.

You can keep yourself out of the medical system, and safeguard your health
for many years to come, if you do these three things:

Get 15 minutes of vigorous exercise at least 3 times per week

Get 8 hours of sound sleep every night (preferably getting to bed before
midnight)

Keep sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and trans fats to an absolute minimum
in your diet

There is a fourth thing that you can add and that is “grounding” which
I talked about in an earlier newsletter. You can learn more about grounding

Most health problems and chronic diseases have the same underlying cause,
and that’s inflammation. All the strategies I mentioned above will help
decrease inflammation and lead to better health. It’s not rocket science,
but lots of people still over-think it.

Don’t avoid or put off doing these things because you can’t do them
perfectly or you can’t ALWAYS do them. Nothing people do is perfect, but
just do the best you can, and you will be miles ahead of where most people
are!

Vaccines are a big business these days and they are currently being
“pushed” on the public at every turn. This is because they are a huge
moneymaker for the drug industry, but there is very little evidence that
they actually protect your health.

Also, the US Supreme Court has rules that vaccine companies are immune from
lawsuits for any damages their vaccines cause to your health. So you have
no legal protections from these vaccines and their effects.

What protects you from disease is a strong immune system, but some of the
ingredients in these vaccines actually weaken the immune system which
leaves you vulnerable to diseases.

My late mother used to get “flu shots” every year, and every year she
got the flu. They never prevented the flu in her case because her immune
system was weak. She trusted the doctors who pushed the flu shot, but sadly
they were wrong and her trust was misplaced.

If you are being urged to get “vaccinated” push back on these medical
people and demand they show you real scientifically documented evidence
that the vaccine is safe and effective. My guess is that they will not be
able to because the evidence isn’t there.

This is especially true where vaccination of children is concerned. The
autism rate for children at one time was 1 in 10,000. Now it is 1 in 88,
and is actually more like 1 in 55 or so among males children.

Autism rates have pretty much paralleled the increase in vaccinations given
children, and while that’s not proof that autism is caused by vaccines, it
is a very suspicious “co-incidence!”

The bottom line is that you should be very cautious about ANYTHING a
medical person wants to inject into your body OR your child’s body. You are
ultimately responsible for your health and the health of your children.

For this reason you should always “do your research” on vaccines or any
other drug that doctors want to give you! Don’t let the “system” profit
at the expense of your health!

On a lighter note, the new Iron Man film is coming out on May 3rd.
Interestingly, they are showing a different version in China, perhaps in
part because the “The Mandarin” (the villain in the film), is Chinese,
but is being played by British actor Ben Kingsly.

I love the sci-fi/techno aspects of the film, and of course Robert Downey
Jr. is perfect to play Tony Stark! I read the comics when I was a kid, and
it’s kind of exciting to be seeing these stories adapted to the big screen,
using modern special effects that make it all seem so real!

I will do a review on this film when it comes out and i’ve seen it, but it will
probably be the sci-fi hit of the year.

This weeks musical clip is one of my very favorites, and has a special
meaning for me. This song called “Sweet Baby” by George Duke and
Stanley Clark came out in 1981. It was the year that I won the US nationals
in Powerlifting.

I had a hard training cycle for that contest and had to lose over 20 pounds
in a weeks time to make weight for the contest. When I arrived in Boise
Idaho for the championships this beautiful and upbeat song was the first
thing I heard playing as I rode in the limo to my hotel.

It was a nice June Idaho evening, and all my fears and uncertainty about
the upcoming contest, just evaporated in the cool night air. I just knew
greats things would happen for me that weekend…and they did!

Hi George,

Wouldn’t you know it, with issue #13 of the newsletter, it’s having an
“identity crisis.” But…..in a way that’s a GOOD thing! With 2013 upon us,
I wanted to revisit just what “Age Better” is all about.

It’s always hard for me to stay squarely on topic, because I have lots of
interests. This newsletter spans a number of topics, but I’m always
looking to tie them all into an overarching theme of …..”living better!”

I’ll admit that many of my ideas are well off the beaten track so to speak.
They are the result of the patterns I’ve observed and my effort to make
logical sense out of them.

I try and reduce everything to it’s simplest form when sharing them
with others. I believe that over time, they will prove to be correct, and you
will have had the benefit of knowing about these things well ahead of
everyone else!

So just to reiterate, “Age Better” will cover:

1) Anti-aging and Wellness

2) Personal Development and Motivation

3) Internet Marketing (making money online)

In order to be healthy and well, you need to be able to afford to eat
properly and use whatever nutritional supplements are needed. You also
need the motivation to do things like exercise and upgrade your nutrition.

Finally, whether you want to create a new lifestyle, including an easier way
to make a living, or just supplement the income from your regular job, you
can do that on the Internet, IF you know how to go about it.

I try to separate nonsense from real value, and share the best of what I
have learned, discovered, and experienced with you. I am always open to
suggestions you send me via email, so please….don’t hesitate to do so.

I will always listen and be as responsive as I can. If there are additional
topics you want me to cover let me know.

Ok, last issue I mentioned winter cold and the stress it brings. The
reasons for this is this simple equation I shared with you last time:

heat loss=energy loss=lowered immunity from colds and flu!

When you lose body heat, you are literally “leaking” energy which you
need to power the critical systems of your body. This weakens your
immune system and sets you up for illness such as colds and flu.

Here is what I do, and what has kept me healthy thus far this winter. I
believe it will work just as well for you.

1) First dress very warmly both indoors and out.

2) Eat extra calories in the winter (protein, good fats, and carbs, but avoid
junk food)

3) Use herbal adaptogens like Rhodiola to manage stress.

Adaptogens work by balancing your system. Exactly how they do this is
beyond my expertise to explain, but in my experience, they do it quite
effectively.

I reccomend one called “Rhodiola” or “Arctic Root.” It is used a lot in
Eastern Europe and was one of the reasons the old Soviet Union
dominated sports in the Olympics.

It will help fortify you against stress including thermal stress (winter cold).

Rhodiola also helps curb depression, and by this I don’t mean serious
clinical depression, but the kind of blues many of us tend to get in the
winter months when it’s cold and we get far less sunlight.

200-400 milligrams per day in divided doses should be all you need. If you
are on any medications ALWAYS check with your doctor before using any
herbal supplement, to avoid problems.

I have a book review for you, and I hesitated a bit with this one because
the guy who wrote it is a pretty intense character. In fact, I actually disliked
this guy before I read his book. His name is Bill Romanowski, and the book
is called:

”Romo… My Life on The Edge, Living Dreams and Slaying Dragons!”

“Romo” is the true story of an NFL football legend, what he went through
playing one of the roughest sports in the world and how he used nutrition,
exercise, and other performance enhancing strategies to improve his play
and lengthen his career.

He used some dangerous substances during his playing days, and please
understand I don’t condone those things, but I liked the fact that he was
honest about what he took and why, both good and bad.

I always assumed that Romanowski was a genetic freak that just naturally
excelled.  Boy…was I wrong. Turns out he was a very hard working guy,
who made himself into a great player mostly through sheer determination.

He was not big into anabolic steroids as you might think, although he did
use them, they were not a major part of his routine. He researched many
ways of healing and recovering from the brutal punishment of pro football.

This book is amazingly honest about his playing days, his fears, setbacks,
triumphs, and philosophy. To look at this man simply as an NFL assassin is
way too narrow a view.

He freely admits that made some serious mistakes and payed a heavy
price for them.

Yet, I found myself amazed at his resourcefulness, incredible work ethic,
and love for the game. He shares his personal life as well, and you see a
man trying hard to balance his football career and his role as devoted
husband and father.

“Romo” was light years ahead of the other players in the league when it
came to healing and recovery methods, and always freely shared what he
discovered with his teammates.

I have been delving into topics like nutrition, exercise, and performance
enhancement for years, but I still learned things from this book that
even I was not aware of.

Once I started I just couldn’t put the book down. If you like football, or even
if you don’t, I still think you will find that “Romo” is a great read. You will
learn about Bill Romanowski the human being as well as one of footballs
most enduring warriors.

Do yourself a favor and read “Romo.” you will be glad you did!

This holiday season has really been dampened by the terrible tragedy that unfolded in Connecticut. I can’t fathom somebody doing such terrible things to innocent children. The only consolation is that we will be determined find a way to prevent these things from happening in the future! My heart goes out to the families of the children and teachers.

Yet there is still so much good in the world, and there are people everywhere who act with kindness and compassion toward others. A recent phone conversation with my sister confirmed this fact.

She told me that my nephew Andrew, who is a police office was going on a trip to Virginia, and when I asked why, she told me that he and a group of officers from Massachusetts were going to visit a young boy with terminal brain cancer.

This youngster had dreamed of becoming a police officer when he grew up, and sadly he will not likely get that chance. His wish was to be visited by police officers and they are going down there to comfort and honor him.

They will make him an honorary police officer, give him a badge with his name on it, and present the family with donations they have collected. I have never been prouder of my nephew, who has matured into a caring and compassionate man.

I have a couple of suggestions for protecting yourself from colds and flu during the winter months. I use these items myself as needed. All these things are natural, safe, and I have found them very effective.

Liposomal vitamin-c:  This is vitamin-c bound to a fat molecule (hence the name liposomal) which makes it much more bio-available to your body and easily absorbed. It’s supposed to be as effective as inter-venous vitamin-c, which is pretty darn impressive.

It is currently being researched as a potential form of treatment for cancer and has shown some impressive results by enhancing immunityand detoxifying cells.

The smaller the liposomes (particles of encapsulated vitamin-c) the better absorbed they are. The “lipid” used should be phosphatidylcholine.

As safe as vitamin-c is, there are certain people who should not use vitamin-c supplements unless they get their doctor’s ok.

The second item I use mostly on infections is colloidal silver. Again this works very well because bacteria can’t become resistant to it. You can find it in most health food stores and for more info check out my web page on it.

I have used this on some intense infections and it always works quickly and completely. The only side effect I have noticed is a slight bit of constipation, which depends on the dosage and how long I use it.

With that said, I would caution that you always see a doctor for anything above a slight infection, as they can be dangerous. No product I recommend is meant to substitute for proper medical treatment. Rather they can be helpful for minor things, and also for more serious things when used in addition to standard medical treatment.

So….bottom line, if you are really sick, don’t just self medicate, always see a doctor to be on the safe side!

Ok, here comes another movie review, and if you are wondering why I talk about older films, it’s because they made a strong and positive impression on me. These types of movies engage you on an emotional level which I think is the key to a great film.

I’m not saying that there aren’t any current movies that are good, but it seems (in my hallowed opinion -:D). Hollywood is cranking out a lot of films without real substance these days, in that they don’t connect with the audience on an emotional level.

With that said, I recommend you check out “Antwon Fisher.”  The movie stars Derek Luke in the title role, Denzel Washington as the psychiatrist, and Joy Bryant as Fisher’s supportive girlfriend.

The screenplay was written by the real Antwon Fisher, and based on his book “Finding Fish.” In the film Antwon who was given up for adoption by his drug dependent mother endures physical, sexual, and verbal abuse while in foster care.

His anger problems while in the navy bring him to the attention of a caring psychiatrist played wonderfully by Denzel Washington. In the film Antwon must overcome his inner rage, and with the help of his girlfriend seeks and is reunited with his extended family.

The scene where he meets his extended family for the first time is quite an emotional moment and will have you reaching for the Kleenex once again. Fine performances all around by the actors in this film, which is also Denzel Washington’s directorial debut.

It got 4.5 stars on Amazon over 147 reviews. Definitely worth watching!

Since this newsletter IS about antiaging, I will be delving into that topic more intensely in the new year, and evaluating some products that actually DO have the ability to slow or even reverse SOME aspects of aging.
