With all the news coverage of the US government “shutdown” you would think the sky is falling. In truth about 85% of the US Federal government is still operating normally. I think we would do well to remember that private citizens are what keep everything going, and that government should serve our needs, not the other way around.

We still have to get up and go to work in the morning, pay our bills, take care of our families, and all the other things that life involves on a daily basis. So it goes with health as well. We are the stewards of our own health, and if we do not take care of ourselves, no “healthcare plan” whether private or government run will matter.

#~#~#

Our health is in OUR hands. Always remember that, and you will go a long way towards making sure that you have the health to enjoy your life fully and for a long time! One of the most important aspects of health is how your colon (also called the gut) functions.

Since certain neurotransmitters are actually made in your intestinal tract, “gut health” can affect your emotions, and thinking as well as how you physically feel. So as you can see it’s vitally important to have it functioning optimally!

There are several things we need to get this right. One is the right type and amount of fiber, and the other is probiotic bacteria.  Click on the links below to check out my web pages on these two topics.

Fiber:

http://www.longevity-and-antiaging-secrets.com/dietary-fiber.html

Soluble Fiber and Cholesterol

http://www.cholesteroltutor.com/soluble-fiber-for-cholesterol/

Probiotics:

http://www.longevity-and-antiaging-secrets.com/probiotics.html

Health of your stomach and colon is the key to overall health for several reasons. You need to absorb and assimilate your food for the nutrients your body needs. If your GI tract isn’t healthy, you can get needed nutrients from your foods.

The longer the “transit time” it takes for waste to exit the colon, the longer you are exposed to toxins that can create cancerous conditions in the body. Think about it, you wouldn’t keep your garbage in your kitchen for months, you would throw it out as soon as possible, because keeping it around is unsanitary.

The same can be said for eliminating waste from your body. It needs to happen every day, and be as complete as possible. An adequate amount of both soluble and insoluble fiber is essential to this process.

An example of insoluble fiber is Psyllium seed husks. These absorb water and provide a “bulking” effect to waste in the colon.

An example of soluble fiber is fruit like apples which also assist in elimination though stimulation of peristalsis (the process of moving the bowels). By the way, the bowels should be moved at least once per day if not more.

I have heard doctors tell their patients that this is not important. In the case of one gentleman I know, his doctor told him that a bowel movement every few days was “normal” for him. This is incredibly bad medical advice.

I have had good luck with just plain Psyllium husks in water, but of course your experience may be different. Whole grains like oat groats, quinoa, or ground flaxseeds can help provide the fiber that’s beneficial to the colon.

Another factor that’s important is the bacteria that is found in the colon. If it’s the normal beneficial bacteria then you will have normal bowel function, and neither be constipated or suffer from diarrhea.

You can get this beneficial bacteria either from probiotic supplements or dairy products like yogurt or kefir. Commercial yogurts and kefirs lose much of their benefit from pasteurization.  While I think the dangers of unpasteurized products are overblown, I can’t advise you to consume them for reasons of liability.

It’s safest to use a probiotic supplement or fermented dairy products as your probiotic source. Those of you who get my newsletter know that I am an advocate of the blood type diet.

When you buy these fermented dairy products, look for ones that advertise that they contain “live cultures.” This indicates they will have sufficient bacteria to be of help to you. Avoid products that contain a lot of sugar, or artificial sweeteners for obvious reasons.

Look for a live-cultured plain yogurt, preferably made from goat milk or a pasture raised cow’s milk. For kefir, the same rules follow. Plain and unsweetened is best, and you can add some berries for natural sweetening to the yogurt or kefir.

Probiotic bacteria is specific to blood type and in the near future I will be delving int that with some specific recommendations. Let’s suffice it to say that for all intents and purposes, the right probiotic foods and supplements for your blood type will result in a normally functioning colon and regular bowel movements.

So if what you are doing results in normal function, then you pretty much have it right!

Now I have something very cool to share with all of you…

Barbara Streisand is possibly the most talented performer that ever graced a stage in any time period. Yes I know that is quite an accolade, but I believe it is well earned.

There is a full concert by the incomparable Barbara Streisand on Youtube, and here is the link:

Enjoy…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upFtYYpgb3A

I had forgotten how gorgeous her voice is and how romantic her delivery is. She is truly a once in a lifetime performer, and I’m glad I live in a time when I get to hear her perform.

As I write this a parade, our local  “Memorial Day Parade” is passing right by my doorstep. It’s a reminder that we honor those who have made sacrifices for our country, for it’s liberty and sovereignty.

That spirit of self sacrifice is absolutely essential for ANY free society to survive and prosper. It seems to be sadly lacking in our present day, and we would be wise to understand that without it, we can’t survive as a nation or as a civilization.

At the end of the day, it’s not about parades, cookouts, or fireworks, but about the commitment each of us has to act with integrity and honor in everything we do. That’s the only thing that can turn this country around. It’s what we owe not only to our veterans, but to each other as well!

Sometimes we think we KNOW things because we have heard them so many times we reason that they MUST be true! This is the case with the myth of “cholesterol and heart disease.” I call it a myth, because it rests on a foundation of faulty science and dangerous half-truths.

Dr. Stephen Sinatra M.D. FACC, CCN, has co-authored a book with Dr. Johnny Bowden PhD about the “cholesterol myth, that will explain how and why medical science got it wrong about cholesterol and what you need to do to protect yourself from heart disease.

Here are a just few things revealed in the book:

Cholesterol is an absolutely vital substance that your body needs and can’t live without.

Cholesterol is manufactured in your body and used to make hormones, and other things your body needs

The idea of “good” and “bad” cholesterol is overly simplistic and inaccurate

LDL is not necessarily “bad”

HDL is not necessarily “good”

Inflammation is the real cause of heart disease not cholesterol

There is NO scientific evidence that saturated fat causes heart disease.

Intrigued? The you need to read the book!

This book received 5 stars across 272 customer reviews, and after having read it myself, I can see why! When you finish reading this book, you will know more about how to prevent heart disease than most doctors do!

When I was young (around 10 years old), there was a television series called “One Step Beyond” which was about the supernatural that scared me quite a bit. I remember that the music and the narrator seemed very creepy to me, and the stories were said to be true!

In fact even now at age 58, when I hear the music, I still get goosebumps.  There was no blood and gore in this program, but it managed to get under my skin in a big way. It scared you not with violence, blood or monsters, but by suggestion and mystery.

Here is one of the episodes that I found really unsettling. It’s on Youtube at the links below:

(“One Step Beyond – The Image of Death” Part 1)

(“One Step Beyond – The Image of Death” Part 2)

Let me know if you find it as scary as I did. There are many of these old episodes on Youtube, and they are still enjoyable to watch!

I enjoy sharing the musical artists I have found online with you. There’s so much awesome talent out there that has yet to be “mainstreamed” and discovered by a wider audience. So many gems to be found, and enjoyed.

Also, music is a form of sound, which has positive energy and is healthy for the body. Did you know for instance that conductors of orchestras have the longest life spans of ANY profession?

Part of the reason is the way they use their arms which is a very healthy way to exercise, and reduce their risk of heart disease. The other is that they work doing something they absolutely love each and every day…MUSIC!

In honor of Memorial Day, I present this beautiful tribute to our fallen veterans sung by America’s angel of song Jackie Evancho.

It is my hope, and I am sure also the hope of  all of us, that some day, there will be no more wars, and all of our soldiers can come home to their families forever.

Age Better #26 – Custom Gourmet Protein Powder

When I started this week’s newsletter, it was before the terrible events at
the Boston Marathon. I was actually in Cambridge, a couple of miles from
the site of the bombing, and heard the subway was diverted around the
affected area.

What’s there to say other than this was a terrible tragedy, and that our
hearts go out to all the people and families that have been affected by
this senseless violence.

People gathered peacefully for an athletic event, were subject to
unspeakable evil. My young cousin and her mother were at the site of the
bombing and thankfully left ten minutes prior to when the bomb when off.

Our family is thankful they missed the bomb’s detonation by mere minutes.
It really makes you stop and think about how fragile and precious life
really is. It reminds us that we should all have the take opportunity to do
the things we have been putting off.

Life is really a series of opportunities taken and acted upon. Whatever
your passion, don’t wait to act upon your desires and goals. Move forward,
because you never know just how much time you!

Well it’s finally getting warmer around here. Somebody must have reminded
Mother Nature than it’s spring already, time for some nice weather for us
winter weary New Englanders.

I have a brand new tenant, and really lucked out on this one. His name is
Devon, he’s a marketing manager, musician, and craft beer aficionado. He
appreciates being so close to Boston, and all the great restaurants and
clubs in our area.

Since my neighborhood is minutes from one of the hippest spots in greater
Boston “Davis Square,” it’s the idea location from which to enjoy the
local flavor. I feel lucky to live where I do, with everything I need just
minutes from my doorstep!

I recently changed my diet up a bit and overall am eating somewhat less
protein. I wanted to get away from protein supplementation and more to real
foods, but what I found is that my energy suffered.

I found this a bit confusing, because we’ve always been told by
“nutritionists” that protein is not the preferred energy source for
your body. This may be true, but I find that when I eat more protein, I
have more energy, and seem to need less sleep. What gives?

Well, I did some research and found that ATP synthesis requires protein,
because enzymes (which are made of protein) are needed to bio-synthesize
ATP. This makes sense to me, because I always felt more energy when my
protein intake was higher.

How high? Well I would say 1 gram of protein for every pound of
body-weight, make that lean body-weight. So for instance if you weight 200
lbs, at 20% bodyweight, then your lean bodyweight is about 160 lbs. Your
protein intake should be about 160 grams.

While you can certainly get that much protein just eating solid foods,
getting the required amount of protein becomes an issue of convenience.
That’s where protein powders come in. Good protein powder is not cheap, but
if you are exercising a lot, it’s probably a good idea to supplement with
extra protein.

True Nutrition has the best selection of protein powders on the market for
the physically active person. They are great to deal with, and the quality
of their products is very high.

The link to visit True Nutrition is on my webpage:

Their selection, service, and quality are first rate, and they are great to
deal with. Check them out today if you feel you might want to add a bit of
quality protein to your daily diet!

This musical clip from Youtube has a special significance for me. I
sometimes jokingly refer to it as my “theme song.” Ok, let me explain.
The song is actually the theme song from the TV hospital show St.
Elsewhere.

The show was partly filmed at the old Boston City Hospital (where I was
born) thus, it’s the unofficial theme of my birth hospital. Actually it’s a
nice catchy and upbeat tune…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Vz-qArxJv0

It was composed by Dave Grusin who has done so many excellent movie
soundtracks, and preformed by the GRP All Stars! If you ever get a chance
to see these guys play, don’t miss it!

What is life about? What is it’s meaning? Why are we here?

These two quotes taken together really tell us what life should be all
about. We were created to be happy, to elevate ourselves to a higher level
spiritually and emotionally. When we are happy and inspired, we do our best
work, even when the work is hard and difficult. When we strive to create,
and to make ourselves better we are living in the way we were intended.

“Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of
human existence” – Aristotle

“It is pleasing to God whenever thou rejoicest or laughest from the bottom
of thy heart.”
Martin Luther

Age Better Newsletter – Issue #10 – December 20th, 2012

Published by George Parigian Jr.  for Opted-in Subscribers

———————————————————————————————————–

Hi,

This holiday season has really been dampened by the terrible tragedy that unfolded in Connecticut. I can’t fathom somebody doing such terrible things to innocent children. The only consolation is that we will be determined find a way to prevent these things from happening in the future! My heart goes out to the families of the children and teachers.

Yet there is still so much good in the world, and there are people everywhere who act with kindness and compassion toward others. A recent phone conversation with my sister confirmed this fact.

She told me that my nephew Andrew, who is a police office was going on a trip to Virginia, and when I asked why, she told me that he and a group of officers from Massachusetts were going to visit a young boy with terminal brain cancer.

http://bostinno.com/2012/12/19/cards-for-nathan-burlington-police-deliver-cards/

This youngster had dreamed of becoming a police officer when he grew up, and sadly he will not likely get that chance. His wish was to be visited by police officers and they are going down there to comfort and honor him.

They will make him an honorary police officer, give him a badge with his name on it, and present the family with donations they have collected. I have never been prouder of my nephew, who has matured into a caring and compassionate man.

I have a couple of suggestions for protecting yourself from colds and flu during the winter months. I use these items myself as needed. All these things are natural, safe, and I have found them very effective.

Liposomal vitamin-c:  This is vitamin-c bound to a fat molecule (hence the name liposomal) which makes it much more bio-available to your body and easily absorbed. It’s supposed to be as effective as inter-venous vitamin-c, which is pretty darn impressive.

It is currently being researched as a potential form of treatment for cancer and has shown some impressive results by enhancing immunityand detoxifying cells.

The link below is to a PubMed reference to the study:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21845505

The smaller the liposomes (particles of encapsulated vitamin-c) the better absorbed they are. The “lipid” used should be phosphatidylcholine.

This is the source that I use:

http://www.healthyitems.com/Liposomals-s/41.htm

As safe as vitamin-c is, there are certain people who should not use vitamin-c supplements unless they get their doctor’s ok.

People with hemochromatosis which is a condition where iron builds up in their bodies People G6PD syndrome, which is an enzyme deficiency People with kidney problems or those getting dialysis treatments People on blood thinners like Coumadin or Warfarin

#~#~#

The second item I use mostly on infections is colloidal silver. Again this works very well because bacteria can’t become resistant to it. You can find it in most health food stores and for more info check out my web page on it.

http://www.longevity-and-antiaging-secrets.com/liquid-colloidal-silver.html

I have used this on some intense infections and it always works quickly and completely. The only side effect I have noticed is a slight bit of constipation, which depends on the dosage and how long I use it.

With that said, I would caution that you always see a doctor for anything above a slight infection, as they can be dangerous. No product I recommend is meant to substitute for proper medical treatment. Rather they can be helpful for minor things, and also for more serious things when used in addition to standard medical treatment.

So….bottom line, if you are really sick, don’t just self medicate, always see a doctor to be on the safe side!

Ok, here comes another movie review, and if you are wondering why I talk about older films, it’s because they made a strong and positive impression on me. These types of movies engage you on an emotional level which I think is the key to a great film.

I’m not saying that there aren’t any current movies that are good, but it seems (in my hallowed opinion -:D). Hollywood is cranking out a lot of films without real substance these days, in that they don’t connect with the audience on an emotional level.

With that said, I recommend you check out “Antwon Fisher.”  The movie stars Derek Luke in the title role, Denzel Washington as the psychiatrist, and Joy Bryant as Fisher’s supportive girlfriend.

The screenplay was written by the real Antwon Fisher, and based on his book “Finding Fish.” In the film Antwon who was given up for adoption by his drug dependent mother endures physical, sexual, and verbal abuse while in foster care.

His anger problems while in the navy bring him to the attention of a caring psychiatrist played wonderfully by Denzel Washington. In the film Antwon must overcome his inner rage, and with the help of his girlfriend seeks and is reunited with his extended family.

This Youtube clip is a wonderful synopsis:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=fvwp&v=55NgzyLGTt0&NR=1

The scene where he meets his extended family for the first time is quite an emotional moment and will have you reaching for the Kleenex once again. Fine performances all around by the actors in this film, which is also Denzel Washington’s directorial debut.

It got 4.5 stars on Amazon over 147 reviews. Definitely worth watching!

Since this newsletter IS about antiaging, I will be delving into that topic more intensely in the new year, and evaluating some products that actually DO have the ability to slow or even reverse SOME aspects of aging.

Remember that antiaging is not about being immortal or living hundreds of years, it’s really being proactive about your health, so you can enjoy your life and loved ones fully for many years to come. That’s what it’s all about, and YES it is very possible to do this!

I will be sharing some outstanding items with you in the weeks and months ahead, so stay with me.

#~#~#

I will leave you with a favorite quote of a good friend that is originally attributed to Theodore Parker, but also used by Martin Luther King.

“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

Thanks for reading, and there will be another newsletter heading your

way next Thursday. Look for it in your in-box, and please don’t hesitate to

write with your questions or comments.
