Last issue I talked about how I “rediscovered” hydration and how important it was to how your body functions. Upon further research I found that it can take weeks to fully rehydrate yourself if you are chronically dehydrated.

I can’t believe how much of a difference it makes as I am still feeling the benefits of drinking more water. What are the benefits I notice? More fullness to the muscles, more energy, clearer thinking and less stress.

Those of you who are concerned about the health and appearance of your skin (and who isn’t) take note as well. Water is critical for skin health, in terms of maintaining the firmness and elasticity of your skin. Drinking more clean water will help your skin more than any other single thing!

Not bad for something as simple and available as clean water!

The summer is flying by and it’s hard to believe that Labor Day is just around the corner. My newest project will be to investigate ionic air cleaners. I had a positive experience with one many years ago, and want to see if I get the same result again.

I visited a friend and she had one in her home. I remembered thinking that it couldn’t be all that effective and was kind of a gimmick that “health nuts” were into, but lo and behold, when I got home I slept like a log that night!

It made me feel the same way as I do when I use a grounding pad. I had no way of knowing at that time about the benefits of negative ions, so I did not make the connection. However when I look back on it now, it makes perfect sense.

My thinking is that if you can create an environment in your home that is abundant in negative ions, you would have a less stressful more health supporting living space. I am looking at ionizers now and in the coming weeks will hopefully have a recommendation for a unit that is reasonable priced and of course is a good quality one, so stay tuned.

Diabetes is a disease that is reaching epidemic proportions especially in the US. We are now seeing it in children, something that was unheard of years ago. There is no question that all of the processed foods we eat are a factor in this disease.

Now you may be asking what diabetes has to do with antiaging. Well, keep in mind that inflammation is a huge factor in aging, and insulin is the most PRO-INFLAMMATORY hormone in the human body! Use of insulin will cause you to age faster, so you will want to minimize it by keeping blood sugar under control.

Even though insulin is necessary for life, chronically high levels of insulin can wreak havoc with your body, and contribute to all kinds of health problems. Insulin dependent diabetics thus have additional health problems due to their use if insulin.

Even if you are not a diabetic, you should try and keep your fasting blood sugar reading no higher than 70! Fasting glucose test measures your blood sugar when you arise in the morning. For every point above 70 your risk of heart disease goes up!

There are things that remind you that time is passing and seemingly quicker than it used to. My niece just turned 23 and is a married mom of 2. I remember babysitting her one evening many years ago so her mom and dad could get a rare night out.

She was months old and pretty much cried all of the evening until her mom came home, and then she was perfectly content again. Now she she has a 4 year old and a months old infant son of her own to care for. It’s hard to believe those years passed so quickly.

Fortunately for me, I keep learning and discovering new things that I believe can retain the quality of our health and give us many more years of enjoyable life. I promised that in this newsletter I would share cutting edge stuff with you and here’s an interesting item I just discovered.

I think I talked about the MTHFR gene defect in one of my past newsletters. It’s pretty common in North Americans. About 55% of the population have some variant of this gene, and it can cause a lot of health problems.

The cheap and easy way to tell if you have this gene defect is to eat asparagus and note whether your urine has a strong odor after about an hour or so. If it does, then you have the gene defect.

The MTHFR gene is responsible for converting folic acid into a form that the human body can actually use called “Methylenetetrahydrofolate” This is known as the “reduced” or “methylated” form of folic acid.

Since your body cannot use ordinary folic acid, this gene must be working correctly in order to convert folic acid into the methylated form. What happens when the gene is defective?

Well…your risk for things like cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, stroke, depression, migraines, birth defects, miscarriage, mental illness, ect. Are greatly increased! Methylation is also how your body repairs your DNA (and protects you from cancer).

That’s the bad news!  The “good news” is that I have stumbled on a cheap nutritional supplement that can help anyone with this gene defect. That may sound like quite a claim, but it has a very sound basis in science.

By using the “reduced” or “methylated” form of folic acid, you can bypass the problems these gene defect causes. This product is called “methylfolate.”  It’s probably made by a number of companies, but I like Jarrow Formulas for both quality and price.

I just picked up a bottle and do notice quite a difference, mainly the mental aspects of this gene problem being alleviated. I feel more relaxed, less tense and anxious. That is the outward sign that the product is working.

Now please understand that I am not claiming that this supplement cures or prevents any disease. I am only saying that since the MTHFR defect causes you not to be able to utilize folic acid, you can take a form of folic acid that your body CAN utilize.

You will be hearing more about this as time goes on, but right now I believe that “methylfolate” is one of THE most valuable nutritional supplements you can take. Here is a link to it on Amazon:

If you try this nutritional supplement, please let me know how it works for you. Dosage requirements would vary from person to person, but the rule of thumb I go by is to start with the smallest dose, and see how that works for you.

Start with one capsule (400 mcg) and you can take this 3-4 times per week or every other day. If you have the MTHFR gene defect, you should notice a feeling of calmness and well being.

You can tell if you have this defect by eating asparagus and noticing of yoiur urine has a strong odor afterward. If the odor is present, this is an indication that you have this gene defect, and would benefit by taking methyl donors like methylfolate, SAM-E, or trimethylglicine.

Call me infantile…BUT I ‘ve always been a comic book aficionado. I grew up reading Marvel Comics and to a lesser extent DC as well. With that said, it’s way cool to see the characters I read so many years ago, being recreated on the big screen.

Thor 2 “The Dark World” will be out in November, as will Captain America “The Winter Soldier.” Captain America is played by actor Chris Evans who grew up in Sudbury, Massachusetts, about 30 minutes from where I live.

I can’t wait for these films and will review them when they are out. “Agents of Shield” is coming to television in the fall, I believe the first episode will be September 24th.  Due to demand by fans, Agent Phil Coulson will be resurrected from the dead (he died in The Avengers). He plays “director Fury’s” right hand man.

This series should be great fun!

I opened my Facebook page this morning only to be greeted by something that made me very sad and incredibly angry at the same time. It was the page of an organization that documents animal cruelty in Asia.

In Asia dog and cats are killed and eaten as we do with livestock and poultry in this country, but the brutally inhumane methods of caging and killing these innocent animals are stomach churning to say the least.

This is extremely difficult for me as I have two shelter cats that I love dearly. Just imagine someone trying to harm your children in this way, and you have some idea how horrible this is, and why I feel so strongly about it.

If you see or get petitions to oppose this terrible cruelty, please sign them to add your voice to those trying to protect these animals from being killed in these horrible ways. They can’t speak up for themselves, only we can, AND WE MUST! . Thank you for listening, and for caring…

I got an email message from one of my readers who is recovering from lung cancer. She told me about the personal nutritional regimen she was on and asked me if I had any additional information that could help her.

Let me start out by saying that nothing I write here should be used in place of  medical care you receive from your doctor. I am not promoting cures or advising you not to seek proper medical help for your health problems.

With that said, let me share a few things with you in regard to cancer.

First, tumors (because of their dysfunctional energy metabolism) have a voracious appetite for sugar. If you have cancer of any kind you MUST try and eliminate as much refined sugar from your diet as possible.

If you have cancer, eating sugar is like throwing gasoline on a fire. Don’t do it! It will only make the cancer progress faster, and prevent your recovery.

The second issue involves a gene called MTHFR, which drives inflammation by improperly “methylating” certain substances in your body.  This gene (and it’s effects) can be modified by using a nutritional supplement called a “methyl donor.”

Another thing I would caution you on is the use of the drug acetaminophen (brand name Tylenol) This drug depletes something called “glutathione” from your system. Since glutathione is the primary cellular antioixidant that protects cells from cancer, you do not
want to take any substance that depletes it.

So avoid Tylenol even if you are healthy!

It goes without saying that nutritional support is absolutely ESSENTIAL in recovering from cancer. With that, I would strongly recommend you check out this book. It’s called: “Beating Cancer With Nutrition.”

The last thing I would add to this is “grounding!” Because it is so simple, effective, and will not interfere with any other kind of treatment, it’s something that everyone (not just cancer patients) should be doing.

Age Better #25 – When healthcare really isn’t healthy

When I first started to write this newsletter, I vowed NOT to make it
political, but I do want to say some things about our healthcare system,
why I feel it’s going in the wrong direction, and what you can do to
protect YOUR health from the healthcare system.

The American healthcare system is based first on profit! Now there’s
nothing wrong with profit. We are a capitalist system, and the object of
any private business is to make money. But there are ethical and moral
standards that I believe should always apply.

Our healthcare system is based on treating symptoms of disease with
patented drugs, rather than identifying the causes of disease and
eliminating them. The government subsidizes junk food companies that make
the products that contribute to disease.

This is why I am always dubious of the idea that government can improve the
health of citizens, when in fact it promotes the very things that make us
unhealthy. The good news is that you don’t have to be a victim of the
medical system.

You can keep yourself out of the medical system, and safeguard your health
for many years to come, if you do these three things:

Get 15 minutes of vigorous exercise at least 3 times per week

Get 8 hours of sound sleep every night (preferably getting to bed before
midnight)

Keep sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and trans fats to an absolute minimum
in your diet

There is a fourth thing that you can add and that is “grounding” which
I talked about in an earlier newsletter. You can learn more about grounding

Most health problems and chronic diseases have the same underlying cause,
and that’s inflammation. All the strategies I mentioned above will help
decrease inflammation and lead to better health. It’s not rocket science,
but lots of people still over-think it.

Don’t avoid or put off doing these things because you can’t do them
perfectly or you can’t ALWAYS do them. Nothing people do is perfect, but
just do the best you can, and you will be miles ahead of where most people
are!

Vaccines are a big business these days and they are currently being
“pushed” on the public at every turn. This is because they are a huge
moneymaker for the drug industry, but there is very little evidence that
they actually protect your health.

Also, the US Supreme Court has rules that vaccine companies are immune from
lawsuits for any damages their vaccines cause to your health. So you have
no legal protections from these vaccines and their effects.

What protects you from disease is a strong immune system, but some of the
ingredients in these vaccines actually weaken the immune system which
leaves you vulnerable to diseases.

My late mother used to get “flu shots” every year, and every year she
got the flu. They never prevented the flu in her case because her immune
system was weak. She trusted the doctors who pushed the flu shot, but sadly
they were wrong and her trust was misplaced.

If you are being urged to get “vaccinated” push back on these medical
people and demand they show you real scientifically documented evidence
that the vaccine is safe and effective. My guess is that they will not be
able to because the evidence isn’t there.

This is especially true where vaccination of children is concerned. The
autism rate for children at one time was 1 in 10,000. Now it is 1 in 88,
and is actually more like 1 in 55 or so among males children.

Autism rates have pretty much paralleled the increase in vaccinations given
children, and while that’s not proof that autism is caused by vaccines, it
is a very suspicious “co-incidence!”

The bottom line is that you should be very cautious about ANYTHING a
medical person wants to inject into your body OR your child’s body. You are
ultimately responsible for your health and the health of your children.

For this reason you should always “do your research” on vaccines or any
other drug that doctors want to give you! Don’t let the “system” profit
at the expense of your health!

On a lighter note, the new Iron Man film is coming out on May 3rd.
Interestingly, they are showing a different version in China, perhaps in
part because the “The Mandarin” (the villain in the film), is Chinese,
but is being played by British actor Ben Kingsly.

I love the sci-fi/techno aspects of the film, and of course Robert Downey
Jr. is perfect to play Tony Stark! I read the comics when I was a kid, and
it’s kind of exciting to be seeing these stories adapted to the big screen,
using modern special effects that make it all seem so real!

I will do a review on this film when it comes out and i’ve seen it, but it will
probably be the sci-fi hit of the year.

This weeks musical clip is one of my very favorites, and has a special
meaning for me. This song called “Sweet Baby” by George Duke and
Stanley Clark came out in 1981. It was the year that I won the US nationals
in Powerlifting.

I had a hard training cycle for that contest and had to lose over 20 pounds
in a weeks time to make weight for the contest. When I arrived in Boise
Idaho for the championships this beautiful and upbeat song was the first
thing I heard playing as I rode in the limo to my hotel.

It was a nice June Idaho evening, and all my fears and uncertainty about
the upcoming contest, just evaporated in the cool night air. I just knew
greats things would happen for me that weekend…and they did!

It’s Friday, and we all made it through another week after Hurricane Sandy
and the minor Nor’easter we had in New England, it’s nice to have some
sunshine and warmer temperatures, even if it’s only temporary.

I’m looking forward to the holidays, spending time with my family and
friends, good food, and good times.

As we approach the holidays beginning with Thanksgiving, I will share some
simple tips to help manage
your diet and minimize packing on those pounds that
usually come with
holiday eating.

I wanted to mention the election and relate it to our “personal healthcare.”
The re-election of Barack Obama, likely means that the “Affordable Health
Care Act” is here to stay.

My personal feeling is that this won’t necessarily be a good thing for our
health because it props up a system focused on using dangerous toxic
drugs to attain health.  This is going in the wrong direction.

Drugs can be helpful in certain special cases, illnesses, and emergencies,
but they can’t promote real health. Only nutritious food, proper exercise,
and stress management can!

Ultimately it’s up to us as individuals to promote our own health. The
“system” can’t do it for us. We spend 50% more on healthcare than any
other country, yet we are something like 30th in longevity!

This suggests our healthcare system isn’t working, if the goal is real
“health” and not just treating symptoms of illness with drugs. So what can
we do to take control of our own health and improve it?

What if I told you that one of the most effective ways you can start
becoming healthier did not require a special diet or exercise routine, but
instead was as simple as putting your bare feet on the ground?

 Sound good?

Well, let me introduce you to “grounding!”

First understand that all of our body functions are powered by something
called ATP, which is the primary energy source not only for humans but all
life on Earth! When our ATP levels are down, we suffer not only from low
energy levels but also chronic disease.

Health problems like congestive heart failure, immune dysfunction,
dementia, etc. are all related to the failure of our cells to produce enough
ATP.  

Oxidative stress from “free radicals” also undermines ATP
production and helps bring on diseases like cancer, heart disease,
diabetes, and Alzheimer’s.

What can we do? The first thing I recommend is simple, inexpensive, and
100% safe! It’s called grounding, and it can help boost your energy, lower
your stress levels, and improve your quality of life.

It consists of establishing an electrical ground with the Earth. Yes that’s
right! Just grounding yourself with the Earth will de-stress and energize
you. You simply allow your bare feet to be in contact with the ground,
which can be grass, sand, or even unpainted cement.

What happens is that you absorb what are called “negative ions”
(electrons) into your body from the Earth. These free electrons
(millions of them) act just like an anti-oxidant in your body, to neutralize
 free radicals and boost your energy levels.

When indoors you can use what is called a “grounding pad” or “grounding
mat” which connects to the round port on your wall socket to establish the
electrical ground.

Shoes and other aspects of modern life have insulted us from the energy
of the Earth. By reconnecting with that energy we can start taking back

When I first hear Dr. Stephen Sinatra speak about it, I thought…”this
sounds too good to be true,” but it worked as well as he claimed.
