I got a message from a young woman who had written to me years ago after visiting my antiaging website and asking me for advice for a health problem she was having. She was told she had a thyroid problem but through her own research found out she was misdiagnosed!

She had been put on Omprazole, which is a “proton pump inhibitor” which decreases stomach acid. This can cause malabsorption of food, and she had to fight her doctor to get the tests that indicated that she had vitamin deficiencies.

She was on Omeprazoe for years, and she learned this drug should only be taken for several weeks. She was misdiagnosed and improperly prescribed medication. It was only  through her own research and efforts that she is now on the road to recovery.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you have to do your own medical research to make sure your doctors diagnosis and advice is valid, but in many cases that’s what it comes down to. Nobody has as much interest in your health as YOU do!

Don’t assume that you are incapable of understanding things about your health. That’s the biggest mistake you can make! This is how the pharmaceutical industry has become so powerful and abusive. You can and MUST take an active role in protecting your health!

Ordinary people don’t trust in their own intelligence and intuitive wisdom to take control of their own health decisions. It’s always about the newest wonder drug or prescription they see peddled on TV , and they mistakenly assume this is the way to be healthier.

There are a few prescription drugs that are actually helpful in the short term because they control symptoms and allow people to function on a day to day basis. However the vast majority of these drugs are both dangerous and unnecessary, and more and more practicing physicians are coming to the same conclusion.

If your doctor refuses to listen to your concerns or chastises you for trying to learn more about your body and how it functions, then it’s time to find another physician. A good doctor will welcome a patient that is actively engaged in their own health decisions!

The Internet can be a great place to find information, but of course you have to use your head and sort out the bad information from the good. There are a number of good websites where you can find accurate and up to date information. I will list a few of these below:

I was about to say that fall is approaching, but in fact, it’s already here! Temperatures are dropping and it’s that time of year when people often get colds because they forget to dress warmly enough.

Yes I know about all the “scientific evidence” that supposedly disproves the idea that people “catch cold” because they don’t dress warmly enough, but my own personal experience seems to suggest otherwise.

The body is very sensitive to changes in it’s environment and this can have effects that you are not aware of. Take some time to evaluate your clothing going into fall and winter. Make sure you dress warmly and comfortably at all times.

Body heat is body energy…remember that! When you lose body heat you lose the energy your body needs for vital functions like your immune system and your hormonal system. Energy in the form of ATP is the “currency” of your day to day health. Preserve it!

Remember, ALWAYS dress warmly, preserve your precious energy for needed body functions, not warming the outside environment! The Earth has plenty of energy, it doesn’t need more from your body!

I can’t give a specific recommendation for thermal and cold weather wear because I am not an expert, but from what I have found online rial polypropylene is considered the best for outdoors.

Do some research on the web and get some good quality winter wear for both outside and inside. You will feel better and stay healthier!

For people who are into musical theater, Steven Sondheim is a magical name! This is one of Sonheim’s best songs sung by none other than Bernadette Peters. She becomes emotionally overwhelmed during the performance.

I believe this is because some years ago she lost her husband in a helicopter accident. It almost seemed like the orchestra kind of marked time a bit to allow her to recover her composure and finish the song. This is truly a heartfelt performance.

Age Better #27 – The 3 Golden Rules of Exercise and a Great New Hydration Product!

Things in the Boston area have finally quieted down now, and the Boston
Marathon bombing story has come to a close. It appears as though two young
Chechen brothers were responsible. I say “appears” because I doubt we
will ever know the real truth!

Several communities in the greater Boston area were locked down as police
searched for the suspects. I have a feeling that we will never know the
full story about why these two individuals did what they are alleged to
have done.

Life is returning back to normal, but the lingering fears, and emotions
over the bombing, and the impact on our community will be there for a long
time to come. I hope that we will never see another tragedy like this one,
but only time will tell.

Since spring has officially sprung, many people have taken to exercise in
hopes of losing their winter fat and looking good for the beach. Many
people get exercise wrong because they assume that more is better, and that
is definitely NOT the case.

Another mistake is doing long slow cardio exercise. This causes your stress
hormone levels to increase and actually works against you when you are
trying to lose fat and build muscle.

When it comes to exercise for fitness and health, there are several rules
to keep in mind for safe and effective exercise.

1. ) Exercise should be intense and brief. Interval training, Heavyhands,
and kettlebell work are all examples of healthy exercise, that will burn
fat and get you fitter and stronger. Long slow cardio and marathon workouts
are out. The long slow approach can actually cause your stress hormone
levels to go up, which will make it more difficult to drop fat.

2.)  Exercise should be progressive, meaning your performance should
improve over the weeks and months that you do your exercise program. You
should very gradually increase the intensity of your workout, but always at
a pace that you can comfortably sustain.

3. ) Exercise should never be overdone. Always finish your exercise program
with strength and energy to spare, and keep those gradual improvements
coming over time. This will ensure that you stay healthy and injury free.

Forget all the hype about insane workouts that leave you exhausted on the
floor, nauseous, or incredibly sore the next day. If you are not a world
class or elite level athlete, you have no business exercising at that
ultra-intensity. It’s just not healthy!

Exercise sessions should be between 10 minutes to no longer than 45 minutes
for non-athletes. For general health and fitness I would say that 15-30
minutes would be best. It depends on your level of fitness, your age,
medical condition ect.

Always play it safe with exercise, because there is no advantage to
training too hard. You only increase your chances of injury, and burning
out physically and mentally. If you are over 40 or have a medical
condition, check with your doctors to make sure you can exercise at a
reasonable intensity.

Remember that a good exercise program will allow you to gradually improve
your level of fitness, while avoiding injury, and not making you feel bad
in the process!

I have been using a new product recently to help with hydration, and I must
say I am really impressed by it. It’s called “Nuun Optimal Hydration”
tablets. These are effervescent tablets that you add to 16 ounces of water
to make a flavored hydrating drink.

This product in my experience, seems to make it easier to drink more water,
because of the flavors and vitamins/minerals that it contains. It helps
replenish electrolyte levels in your body, when you are thirsty and active.

For those of you into movies set in a particular time period, check out
“Mullholland Falls,” starring Nick Nolte and Chaz Palminteri. This film
set in the early 1950′s Los Angeles is a murder mystery that spawned a
short lived TV show called “The Hat Squad”

The film is well shot and acted, and the music although not really accurate
for this time period is hauntingly beautiful. You can watch the entire film

The film features Nick Nolte as Max Hoover, the head of an LA police unit
investigating a murder and coverup that involves the US Atomic Energy
commission. It also stars John Malcovich as an ARMY general, and Melanie
Griffith as Hoover’s wife.

I loved the look and feel of this film, and Nolte is perfect as the
“tough as nails” detective Max Hoover. Check it out…I think you will
really enjoy it.

Mary Fahl is probably my favorite singer in the popular/folk music genre.
Formerly with the group “October Project” she has one of the best
voices in popular music today, and it’s always a treat to see her perform.

Age Better #14: Fight Colds and Flu with Hydrogen Peroxide

We are half way through January and the winter has been mild so far. Six
weeks and we are looking at spring just around the corner. However flu
season is upon us and we are being told to get that “flu shot.”

You might want to take some time to think about that before you do. The
flu vaccine incorporates last year’s strains because this years are just
hitting us. It’s therefore debatable whether these shots help at all.

I’ve never gotten flu shots, and have only had the flu once in the last 15
years. I felt a bit run down one Sunday evening but instead of resting, I
went to the gym and trained VERY hard.

Well as you can imagine, my immune system took a hit and I got sick.

I’ve since learned not to repeat that mistake.  So…when you are feeling
not quite 100%, don’t exercise intensely, especially in the winter. While
exercise is generally good, it does weaken your immune system and leave
you open to colds and flu.

If you feel something “coming on” there is something you can do. Get
some food grade hydrogen peroxide and put a few drops in each ear. This
does not hurt. It will just make a bubbling sound as the peroxide reacts.

Do one ear at a time, and lay down on each side so the peroxide does not
leak out. Hold it in there for several minutes and then let it leak out onto
a tissue.

Repeat this for each ear. You can do this one or twice a week when
you notice signs of a cold or flu coming on. You can even do this once per
week during flu season as a preventative strategy.

You can find hydrogen peroxide at any drugstore, but just don’t ever take
hydrogen peroxide internally though.

I have a policy with my newsletter not to get involved with political topics,
because as you can imagine people have strong feelings about them and
it’s easy to alienate others this way.

However I would just like to say a few words about our current issues.

We are living in very uncertain times and face many difficult issues and
choices. Just remember that the media tends to focus on the bad news
and tragic events, as good news just doesn’t sell the way bad news does.

However there is plenty of good news out there. America’s energy future
looks much brighter, online education, lead by Harvard and M.I.T. promises
to make higher education available to vastly more people.

We are starting to get a handle on our obesity problems as a nation, and I
think we have the information we need to turn the corner and start living
healthier lifestyles. It’s not all bad….not by a longshot!

The problem is that the rapid advancements in all areas of science don’t
get reported on a daily basis to the public. I see some of it because I
research a lot of online sources, but most people don’t.

Even I am amazed at how fast we are progressing!

If you want to look up short abstracts (research reports) on particular
topics in health and medicine, there is a site you should go to called
“PubMed”

“PubMed comprises more than 22 million citations for biomedical literature
from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Citations may
include links to full-text content from PubMed Central and publisher
web sites.”

NaPCA……..

I talked about this product in an earlier newsletter, and wanted to mention
it again. It’s called NaPCA, and it’s made by Twinlab.  I have used this stuff
for over 25 years, and it rocks!

It puts back the natural moisture that age and weather takes out of your
skin. It’s also acts as a “humectant” which means it draws moisture to your
skin from the air around you…pretty cool!

Using this stuff I can shave without getting cut, and it seems to give the
skin a nice glow. It comes in two forms, plain and with added Aloe Vera.
Either will work well, but I like the Aloe version the best.

It’s especially helpful in winter as the cold dry air tends to deplete the
natural moisture from your skin.

Curiosity got the better of me and I finally rented “The Dark Knight Rises.”
To be honest it was nowhere near as violent as I had anticipated, although
it has some intense moments.

The Batman trilogy is dark as this is the way the character of Batman was
written in the comics. The storyline was massively implausible, even for the
sci-fi/superhero genre. I felt the plot was a bit convoluted and some things
in the movie just didn’t fit in.

Christian Bale reprises his role as the Dark Knight (Batman) and squares
off against his ultra nemesis, a drug fueled psychopathic anarchist named
“Bain,” who beats Batman to a pulp and seriously injures him.

The way Batman comes back from this injury to face Bain once again just
isn’t believable, even for a science fiction film! I won’t reveal the ending,
but for me, the film falls short of the other two for the above reasons.

However, if you are a fan of the superhero genre and Batman in particular,
you will still want to see this film. The action, sets, and pace still deliver,
even if I felt the plot had some shortcomings.

The Dark Night Rises is not suitable for younger viewers though.

Is it my imagination or are we getting hammered by more and more dire predictions
of doom than ever before? The fiscal cliff, the Mayan prophecy, peak oil, global
warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, etc. The media seems determined to convince
us that we are about to “fall off the cliff” so to speak.

Hey, I’m not saying we don’t have a lot of problems, but that the media tends to
focus on the negative, and that makes everything seem much worse. So with that
said, let me share a few tidbits of positive and uplifting news with you.

The EIA (Energy Information Administration) is projecting that the US will produce
more energy than we need through the year 2040 (the next 28 years!)

The knowledge doubling rate for science is now 18 months, which means every 18
months we as a society increase our net knowledge by 100%, and this rate is STILL
INCREASING!

In the very near future we will have solar cells that we can paint on our roofs, cars
will run on non polluting natural gas, we will be able to get a college eduction over
the Internet, and miniature robots will effectively repair our bodies from the inside.

To be sure, w have some serious problems to deal with, but every day our ability to
solve these problems gets better with the development of new technologies. I
believe our best days are still ahead of us, if we move forward with confidence not
fear!

Do you know anyone who is interested in health and loves to read? If so, you might
want to get them a copy of this book: “The Four Hour Body,” by Tim Ferris. I know it
sounds gimmicky, but in reality this is an excellent book!

I have been into nutrition and exercise for a very long time, and I can tell right off
the bat if an author knows what he or she is talking about when they write about
these topics.

Tim Ferris absolutely nails it!

The book is a big one (it could probably stop a bullet), but it’s not a book you read
from cover to cover. You will go directly to the sections that specifically interest
you and pick out what is relevant and useful to you.

There are chapters on:

losing fat

gaining muscle

improving your sex life

getting better sleep

healing injuries

getting stronger

running farther and faster

swimming better

living a longer and better life

There is also bonus material on body fat reduction, heavy metal detox, and the use
of “nootropics” which are substances that improve memory, creativity, and focus!

The book is VERY well researched with Tim Ferris becoming the guinea pig for his
own performance experiments. There are also many valuable online references
included where you can do further research into these topics.

It’s been a long time since I have seen anything this complete and well researched
for the money, and it covers so many subtopics of exercise, nutrition, and health,
that there’s bound to be something useful and interesting for every reader.

This book received 4.4 stars over 1,800 customer reviews!

At $17.00 (new hardcover) on Amazon, you would be hard put to find a better buy
for your money than “The Four Hour Body!”

For those of you who live in cold climates, this time of year is a challenge. Although
I can’t prove it, I believe that one of the reasons why winter is cold and flu season is
that we lose vital energy due to the cold temperatures both indoor and out.

Your body burns calories and uses up energy keeping you warm in the winter, and
this takes energy away from other things like your immune system. I think this is
one of the reasons why you seem to get more colds in the winter.

I recommend that you dress VERY warmly in wintertime, even indoors, so that you
don’t lose heat and thus spare the energy your body needs for vital functions like
maintaining your immune system.

There are new lightweight thermal insulating fabrics that you can wear indoors as
well as out of doors. Keep this in mind and dress warmly wherever you are. You will
feel much better through the winter and keep colds at bay.

I do this all winter and it makes quite a difference in my energy levels, and ability to
stay healthy. I haven’t had the flu in over ten years, and of course I do not get flu
shots. You can find “thermals” online at Amazon, LL Beans, Land’s End, Eddie Bauer,
etc.

For outdoor protection in more extreme cold, do what the US military does and use
100% polypropylene. This fabric retains more body heat than any other fabric in
use! You can find it on the web by typing “military thermals” into the Google Search.

You can also check out this site: http://militarythermals.com which I have no
affiliation with. It’s just one of the first ones that come up in search.

I use thermals on both upper and lower body. They are also relatively cheap, and
you will find that you stay a lot more comfortable during the winter months.
Remember, that when you lose body heat you lose energy and when you lose
energy you lose your health!

Inspiration can come in many forms, from seeing someone achieve great success,
or having someone that you respect describe the difficulties they had to overcome
to be successful. My dad used to tell me the following:

“Whatever you do, make a decision. Don’t fail to act because you are afraid to be
wrong or make a mistake. Never be afraid to try!”

I think we tend to look at others who are very successful and think they must be
better than we are. Perhaps some are, but I think in many cases, the difference
between them and the average person is that they were not afraid of failure, or
making mistakes.

If there is something you want to try, just go for it. Don’t ever let the fear of failure
stop you from doing what you really want to do. You are more talented and
competent than you know!
