It’s the 4th of July! As we celebrate our country’s birth, we should remember that the challenges to our freedom are from within rather than from external enemies. There will always be those who want to control others and take away their rights and freedoms.

This is an unfortunately part of human nature, and it’s something that we need to oppose at every turn. We are at our very best when we are free! Freedom to choose how we remain healthy, to worship, to travel, work, and associate are all rights that we must protect, against those who want to take these freedoms away in the guise of helping us!

The Founding Fathers gave us a country that was designed to function as a free society with minimal government, that allowed each individual to pursue his or her destiny and reach their maximum potential.

Those in the generations before us that have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could remain free can best be honored by our continued vigilance and resistance to any efforts to undermine our freedoms!

Do you think your sunscreen is protecting you? Well maybe you better think again! What you thought you knew doesn’t quite match up to the reality of the sun protection product market.

Remember that these products are marketed to sell to you, not necessarily to ensure quality and safety.  You do need sunlight in order for your body to make vitamin-d, but you have to use caution when it comes to sun exposure.

This will give you some solid information that will make choosing a safe and effective sunscreen a whole lot easier! Remember also that the nutrients you take in via your diet also factor into protecting your skin from sun exposure.

Colorful foods that get their pigmentation from their antioxidant compounds are your best bet. These are foods like:

red and orange peppers
dark colored berries
green tea
ripe red tomatoes
cacao
tumeric (circumin)

Omega 3 fatty acids are also necessary for the health of your skin, so be sure to consume fatty cold water fish on a regular basis, and/or use a good pharmaceutical grade fish oil to get your omega 3 fats.

The standard nutrients like vitamin-c, vitamin-e, also help protect your skin from free radical damage due to sun exposure.

All the strategies you might use from grounding, to drinking alkaline water, or using an air ionizer will also help protect your skin. The key is to avoid prolonged exposure especially around noon when the sun is highest in the sky.

You might also want to wear a cap with a visor to protect your head and eyes as well.

Remember that you can even get too much sun exposure when the weather is overcast, because you don’t notice the heat of the sun on your skin and may spend a longer period of time outdoors, thinking you are safe.

If you do get overexposed and end up with a burn, there is an excellent product that will help your skin heal. It’s made with Willard’s Water and is available at the Nutrition Coalition.

Some time ago I shared a link to something called “PubMed” which is a site where you can get abstracts of medical research from many sources.

It’s a great place to start to do some of your own medical research. I know that sounds intimidating, but the Internet makes gathering information so much easier. Don’t be afraid to get out there and search for answers. The information has been put out there for you to help you find answers and solve problems.

The home page of PubMed will have information on how to use this valuable resource. Check it out when you have the chance!

Into Darkness is the second Star Trek film by J.J. Abrams, and it rocks! I don’t want to spoil anything for those that haven’t seen it, but let me just say the action is non-stop and there are several plot twists, including an old Star Trek villain AND icon!

I wasn’t sure that I would like it, as the trailers really didn’t give a good idea of how the plot would unfold. Abrams has definitely put his own unique stamp on the Star Trek films, and they really deliver in the action and special effects department.

Great performances by the main cast in their iconic roles, although they are not quite able to capture the charm of the original series. But this is, after all, a “reboot” of the original, with vastly scaled up action and intensity. Go see it, I don’t think you will be disappointed!

I stumbled yet again on another cool music video clip. I had not heard of Lara Fabian, but she sings in French and has quite a voice. What was really different about this video clip is that the audience really gets into the song, and this has a very emotional effect on her, as you can see.

Truisms about in the field of health and nutrition. We have been told for years now that we need calcium to prevent osteoporosis, but recent evidence suggests that taking extra calcium may not be all that healthy. In fact it may even raise your risk of heart disease!

I love science fiction, especially the “super hero” genre. I just saw the “man of Steel” the 2013 version of the Superman saga. I had heard pro and con about this film, but I have to say I was quite impressed by this film.

The film was directed by Zack Snyder and stars Henry Cavill as Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Cavill’s Superman though different than Chris Reeves, retains the essence of who and what Superman is.

He presents a deeply principled individual of great power who understands the necessity of restraint. He is (just like Chris Reeves) the consummate gentleman, who puts the well being of others before himself. This is the kind of selfless persona that you expect from this character.

Lois Lane played by Amy Adams is a far cry from the previous versions of that character. She is tough and resourceful in her own way and gets into the action, helping Superman escape from captivity by General Zod.  Adams in my view does a great job with this iconic character!

The action sequences are mind blowing thanks to state of the art CGI. The villains (General Zod and company) seem harsher and more violent than in past films, and the ending which I will not give away, follows this pattern.

If you are up for a good time at the movies, I would highly recommend “Man of Steel.” It’s great fun and will not disappoint.

Do you remember Vanessa Williams? She was the first “black” Miss America and had to give up the title because it was found that she had posed nude years before, and the pictures surfaced and caused a scandal.

She rebounded from this experience to become the most successful entertainer of any former Miss America.

She recorded a music video for the song called “Save The Best For Last.”

What a beautiful song and performance by a very lovely woman.

Is it me or is our government becoming more and more corrupt? Every day we turn on the news there seems to be another scandal, and more government officials claiming they know nothing about it, and refusing to be held accountable for what they do.

At the same time ordinary citizens know that certain things that are wrong and if we do them, we are held responsible for it and will be punished. We should demand the same kind of accountability from our political leadership, no matter what their party affiliation.

Sadly, there isn’t much we can do to alter this behavior when “leaders” choose not to lead by example. So each of us must step up and be the change that we want in our society. This starts with a commitment to honest and ethical behavior in everything we do.

I still believe that honesty is the best policy, and that the level of personal responsibility and integrity we have is the best path to a happy and successful life. We can’t change the world if we are unwilling to change ourselves.

The good news is that when we do the right things in the right way, we create a path for ourselves and those we love that leads to success and happiness. It’s kind of a universal truth and has always been this way.

We can create the reality we choose, and “creating” is what life is really about. There is a quote that says “It’s better to light a candle than curse the darkness.” What this means is that only by doing good ourselves can we change what’s bad.

We can’t change everything outside of our own lives, but we don’t have to. The positive changes we make in ourselves have a ripple effect that goes far beyond our personal lives. This is how we change things for the better…starting with ourselves!

Alkalize your body to help prevent cancer!

I wanted to mention a few things about acid/alkaline balance in the body and why it’s critically important to your health. Our bodies are supposed to be somewhat alkaline on the PH scale, and I think the optimal numbers are between approximately 7.3 and 7.5

PH stands for “potential of hydrogen” which affects energy production (ATP) and the entire “electromagnetic balance” of the body. Simply stated, when we are acidic, the blood carries less oxygen and our cells are not able to make as much energy.

This sets the stage for all kinds of problems from congestive heart failure to cancer. All of these are really disturbances in cell energy levels. ATP levels drop and cell voltage also goes down.

The simple equation:

higher cell voltage=good health

lowered cell voltage=poor health

What to do?

The advice to get more fruits and vegetables into your diet is a good one, and what this actually does is to “alkalize” your body. Being more alkaline means more oxygen in your blood, more energy made in your cells, and all around better health.

This is really about maintaining an electromagnetic balance in your body, reducing oxidative stress, and elevating cell energy. All of this increases your health, vitality, and sense of well being. It also lowers your risk of inflammation and chronic disease.

Here’s three things you can do to keep yourself more alkaline:

Eat more fruits and vegetables. You can do this in the form of juicing, OR using something like the “Nutribullet” which I will be reviewing in the near future. Fruit and vegetable juices have an alkalizing effect on the body.

Using a water additive like “Willard’s Water” that will increase the ph of any water you add it to. It’s a great antioxidant that actually allows you to better absorb the water you drink, and the nutrients in your food.

Ground yourself as much as you can during the day and when you sleep. Whenever you can, put your bare feet on grass or unpainted concrete. During the evening or in the winter, use a grounding pad that plugs into the ground hole on your electrical sockets.

You will absorb negative ions from the Earth which will actually thin your blood and reduce inflammation and stress. Grounding has a calming effect on your nervous system that you can really feel.

These simple strategies are things you can fit into your daily life without any real inconvenience and they will go a long way toward making you healthier. Any doctor who is knowledgeable about health will tell you that inflammation is the cause of chronic disease.

Whenever you can reduce inflammation but making your body less acidic, that’s a step in the right direction. This is especially important for diabetics, as the above strategies will lower blood sugar!

There are a number of movies coming out in this summer season that I have put on my list to see. Iron Man 3 was a blast, and being a Trekker from way back, I am planning to see the latest Star Trek film “Into Darkness.”

This is an exciting time if you are a fan of the Marvel Universe. I just heard there will be a SHIELD TV series starting this fall with Clark Gregg reprising his role as Agent Phil Coulsen.

Agent Coulsen died in “The Avengers” movie, but as you know in the world of science fiction, dead isn’t really dead, it’s just that weird state that a character is in before the scriptwriters figure a way to bring him back.

The fan outcry to bring back Agent Coulsen was so great that Marvel decided to resurrect this great character, much to my delight.

The TV series will tie in to the upcoming Avengers film and perhaps other films as well. If you like the SciFi/superhero genre, you will eat this stuff up!

I stumbled upon a really cool music video today! It was by a Filipino singer named Christian Bautista. What really impressed me was the wonderful romantic innocence of this video, where he meets a woman and begins to fall in love with her.

I had never heard of Christan Bautista guy before, (I guess I need to get our more) but he has a great voice, and is apparently a big pop star in Asia. I can see why! The song is called “Love Moves in Mysterious Ways.”
