Dehydration is self sabotage! Yeah I know that’s a strong statement to make, but it’s very true. Let me explain…

Sometimes when it comes to health, the simple things are THE most profound! I have been dealing with some issue around energy and strength levels for many weeks. I tried everything to fix this, but to no avail.

The problems I have been having in the gym with muscle soreness and lack of strength seemed intractable. I don’t wish to use age as an excuse because that becomes self defeating, but the idea seeps into your mind that maybe this is just age related decline.

What I didn’t realize was that I was “chronically” dehydrated, and once I started drinking more water throughout the day, things began to change for the better. Hydration is one of those things we pay lip service to but often don’t take as seriously as we should.

I am as guilty of this as anyone! Part of the problem is that when we don’t understand the reasons for doing certain things, we don’t attach as much importance to them. This was certainly the case with my hydration issues.

I do pay attention to it when I am out in the heat, but when I am home, (and I have access to whatever beverages I want) I tend to forget that I need to be drinking water on an ongoing basis. Just having access to water is not enough…you actually have to drink it!

As my understanding of the electrical nature of the body increases, I begin to connect the dots and realize not just that proper hydration is important, but also WHY it’s important! Getting enough water is critical to your health, and here is why.

We are electrical beings, that depend on having the right balance of electrical energy for our organs and tissues to function properly. Let’s call this “cell capacitance.” In order for electrical energy to flow smoothly through the body we need to have enough water.

Water and minerals in our bodies conduct electricity. The minerals involved in this are called “electrolytes.” These electrolytes require water to function properly and efficiently conduct electrical energy throughout your body.

Cells communicate with each other via the watery medium of the body. When we are lacking in water, our body cells can’t communicate properly and the body can’t work as it should. The nervous system especially needs water to function properly.

This is more of an issue during the summer months because of the heat, but you can also be dehydrated in the winter. You tend not to be as thirsty in winter, and thus can become dehydrated without knowing it.

My suggestion is to keep water that is the ideal temperature for drinking with you at all times. Sip it throughout the day, and make sure it’s not too cold, because you can drink and absorb more water if it is not uncomfortably cold to drink.

How much water should you drink? I’m not convinced there is an absolute rule on this. When you are properly hydrated, your urine should be pretty much clear and not have a yellow color to it.

But I would also say you should gauge it by how you feel. When you are well hydrated you should feel energetic and relaxed. Avoid drinking so much water at one time that you feel bloated. A little at a time is best.

I like bottled water because tap water is often contaminated with chemicals and even prescription drugs. This is something you want to avoid if possible. Chlorine and fluoride are toxins that are not healthy. Avoid them if you possibly can.

There are products that you can add to water that contain nutrients and flavorings. If this is what it takes to get you to drink more water than that’s fine. There is one product that I have tried and really liked. I wrote about it in another newsletter, but I will mention it again.

The product is called “Nuun Optimal Hydration” tablets. These are effervescent tablets added to 16 ounces of water to make a flavored hydrating drink. These tablets contain the necessary electrolytes to replace those that are lost when you sweat.

Here is the link:

http://nuun.com/products

I recommend it because I have used it and it seems to work well for me. There is no affiliate program so I don’t get a commission for doing so, but I do like to share what I find that works well.

Remember that water has a “ph” level and should be slightly alkaline. PH stand for potential hydrogen. When you drink water you are putting more electrons into your body. This is a good thing, because once again… your body is electrical by nature.

Water is used by the body for so many critical biochemical and electrochemical processes that you can’t afford to be dehydrated. So keep this in mind and make sure you drink enough clean pure water during the course of your day.

So…remember that water is liquid energy. I consider good hydration to be one of the keys to “performance enhancement.” By keeping yourself hydrated you will be at your physical and mental best. It really IS that simple!

I recently ran into one of my readers who was visiting colleges in the area with her daughter trying to help her decide which university she will be attending next year. She asked me to write about the cholesterol test that measures particle size.

When it comes to having your cholesterol tested, here are the two tests that are the most valuable:

This test is called “LP(a)” or Vertical Auto Profile (VAP) test. This test breaks down your LDL and tells you if it is made up of mostly small, dangerous particles, or the larger, less dangerous ones.

It also indicates how much Lp(a) is circulating in your bloodstream. The test also analyzes your HDL cholesterol subtypes, and tells you if you have more of the HDL2 subtype, which is the beneficial form of HDL.

You can find out more about this test at:  http://www.atherotech.com

The LPP test also called the Lipoprotein Particle Profile also breaks down cholesterol into its sub fraction particles, but can also measure something called (RLP) or “remnant lipoprotein,” which is a dangerous particle that is not measured by other types of cholesterol tests.

You can find out more at:  http://www.sprectracell.com

Either of these tests is a vast improvement over the older cholesterol tests and will really zero in on your actual risk. Remember it’s not the cholesterol numbers that matter, but the actual particle size and type, and the level of inflammation in your blood stream.

An integrative cardiologist will help you reduce your risk of heart disease without the use of drugs that have dangerous side effects.

“Yesterday we obeyed kings and bent our necks before emperors. But today we kneel only to truth, follow only beauty, and obey only love.”

Khalil Gibran

There are things that remind you that time is passing and seemingly quicker than it used to. My niece just turned 23 and is a married mom of 2. I remember babysitting her one evening many years ago so her mom and dad could get a rare night out.

She was months old and pretty much cried all of the evening until her mom came home, and then she was perfectly content again. Now she she has a 4 year old and a months old infant son of her own to care for. It’s hard to believe those years passed so quickly.

Fortunately for me, I keep learning and discovering new things that I believe can retain the quality of our health and give us many more years of enjoyable life. I promised that in this newsletter I would share cutting edge stuff with you and here’s an interesting item I just discovered.

I think I talked about the MTHFR gene defect in one of my past newsletters. It’s pretty common in North Americans. About 55% of the population have some variant of this gene, and it can cause a lot of health problems.

The cheap and easy way to tell if you have this gene defect is to eat asparagus and note whether your urine has a strong odor after about an hour or so. If it does, then you have the gene defect.

The MTHFR gene is responsible for converting folic acid into a form that the human body can actually use called “Methylenetetrahydrofolate” This is known as the “reduced” or “methylated” form of folic acid.

Since your body cannot use ordinary folic acid, this gene must be working correctly in order to convert folic acid into the methylated form. What happens when the gene is defective?

Well…your risk for things like cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, stroke, depression, migraines, birth defects, miscarriage, mental illness, ect. Are greatly increased! Methylation is also how your body repairs your DNA (and protects you from cancer).

That’s the bad news!  The “good news” is that I have stumbled on a cheap nutritional supplement that can help anyone with this gene defect. That may sound like quite a claim, but it has a very sound basis in science.

Here are some abstracts from Pubmed:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22102928

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23212058

By using the “reduced” or “methylated” form of folic acid, you can bypass the problems these gene defect causes. This product is called “methylfolate.”  It’s probably made by a number of companies, but I like Jarrow Formulas for both quality and price.

I just picked up a bottle and do notice quite a difference, mainly the mental aspects of this gene problem being alleviated. I feel more relaxed, less tense and anxious. That is the outward sign that the product is working.

Now please understand that I am not claiming that this supplement cures or prevents any disease. I am only saying that since the MTHFR defect causes you not to be able to utilize folic acid, you can take a form of folic acid that your body CAN utilize.

You will be hearing more about this as time goes on, but right now I believe that “methylfolate” is one of THE most valuable nutritional supplements you can take. Here is a link to it on Amazon:

http://www.age-better.info/methylfolate

If you try this nutritional supplement, please let me know how it works for you. Dosage requirements would vary from person to person, but the rule of thumb I go by is to start with the smallest dose, and see how that works for you.

Start with one capsule (400 mcg) and you can take this 3-4 times per week or every other day. If you have the MTHFR gene defect, you should notice a feeling of calmness and well being.

You can tell if you have this defect by eating asparagus and noticing of yoiur urine has a strong odor afterward. If the odor is present, this is an indication that you have this gene defect, and would benefit by taking methyl donors like methylfolate, SAM-E, or trimethylglicine.

Call me infantile…BUT I ‘ve always been a comic book aficionado. I grew up reading Marvel Comics and to a lesser extent DC as well. With that said, it’s way cool to see the characters I read so many years ago, being recreated on the big screen.

Thor 2 “The Dark World” will be out in November, as will Captain America “The Winter Soldier.” Captain America is played by actor Chris Evans who grew up in Sudbury, Massachusetts, about 30 minutes from where I live.

I can’t wait for these films and will review them when they are out. “Agents of Shield” is coming to television in the fall, I believe the first episode will be September 24th.  Due to demand by fans, Agent Phil Coulson will be resurrected from the dead (he died in The Avengers). He plays “director Fury’s” right hand man.

This series should be great fun!

This weeks musical clip is a Bruce Hornsby number called “White Wheeled Limousine”
that features one of my favorite guitarists Pat Metheny, who incidentally attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston (about 3 miles from my house!).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqNdp1SLC4g

There is also an excellent trumpet solo by John D’Earth as well. Hornsby’s piano meshes well with Matheny’s guitar, and I wish the clip did not end when it did, but it’s still a treat!

“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”

Benjamin Franklin

It’s the 4th of July! As we celebrate our country’s birth, we should remember that the challenges to our freedom are from within rather than from external enemies. There will always be those who want to control others and take away their rights and freedoms.

This is an unfortunately part of human nature, and it’s something that we need to oppose at every turn. We are at our very best when we are free! Freedom to choose how we remain healthy, to worship, to travel, work, and associate are all rights that we must protect, against those who want to take these freedoms away in the guise of helping us!

The Founding Fathers gave us a country that was designed to function as a free society with minimal government, that allowed each individual to pursue his or her destiny and reach their maximum potential.

Those in the generations before us that have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could remain free can best be honored by our continued vigilance and resistance to any efforts to undermine our freedoms!

Do you think your sunscreen is protecting you? Well maybe you better think again! What you thought you knew doesn’t quite match up to the reality of the sun protection product market.

Remember that these products are marketed to sell to you, not necessarily to ensure quality and safety.  You do need sunlight in order for your body to make vitamin-d, but you have to use caution when it comes to sun exposure.

Here is a link to the Environmental Working Group’s page on sunscreens.

http://www.ewg.org/2013sunscreen/

This will give you some solid information that will make choosing a safe and effective sunscreen a whole lot easier! Remember also that the nutrients you take in via your diet also factor into protecting your skin from sun exposure.

Colorful foods that get their pigmentation from their antioxidant compounds are your best bet. These are foods like:

red and orange peppers
dark colored berries
green tea
ripe red tomatoes
cacao
tumeric (circumin)

Omega 3 fatty acids are also necessary for the health of your skin, so be sure to consume fatty cold water fish on a regular basis, and/or use a good pharmaceutical grade fish oil to get your omega 3 fats.

The standard nutrients like vitamin-c, vitamin-e, also help protect your skin from free radical damage due to sun exposure.

All the strategies you might use from grounding, to drinking alkaline water, or using an air ionizer will also help protect your skin. The key is to avoid prolonged exposure especially around noon when the sun is highest in the sky.

You might also want to wear a cap with a visor to protect your head and eyes as well.

Remember that you can even get too much sun exposure when the weather is overcast, because you don’t notice the heat of the sun on your skin and may spend a longer period of time outdoors, thinking you are safe.

If you do get overexposed and end up with a burn, there is an excellent product that will help your skin heal. It’s made with Willard’s Water and is available at the Nutrition Coalition.

Here is the link: https://www.willardswater.com/store/index.php?ccat=22&item=40

I have no financial interest in this product. I just like it and feel that it works well for minor burns and skin irritations.

Some time ago I shared a link to something called “PubMed” which is a site where you can get abstracts of medical research from many sources.

Here is the link:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/

It’s a great place to start to do some of your own medical research. I know that sounds intimidating, but the Internet makes gathering information so much easier. Don’t be afraid to get out there and search for answers. The information has been put out there for you to help you find answers and solve problems.

The home page of PubMed will have information on how to use this valuable resource. Check it out when you have the chance!

Into Darkness is the second Star Trek film by J.J. Abrams, and it rocks! I don’t want to spoil anything for those that haven’t seen it, but let me just say the action is non-stop and there are several plot twists, including an old Star Trek villain AND icon!

I wasn’t sure that I would like it, as the trailers really didn’t give a good idea of how the plot would unfold. Abrams has definitely put his own unique stamp on the Star Trek films, and they really deliver in the action and special effects department.

Great performances by the main cast in their iconic roles, although they are not quite able to capture the charm of the original series. But this is, after all, a “reboot” of the original, with vastly scaled up action and intensity. Go see it, I don’t think you will be disappointed!

I stumbled yet again on another cool music video clip. I had not heard of Lara Fabian, but she sings in French and has quite a voice. What was really different about this video clip is that the audience really gets into the song, and this has a very emotional effect on her, as you can see.

Enjoy…

Age Better Newsletter #33 – June 6th, 2013
Published by George Parigian Jr. for Opted-in Subscribers

I opened my Facebook page this morning only to be greeted by something that made me very sad and incredibly angry at the same time. It was the page of an organization that documents animal cruelty in Asia.

In Asia dog and cats are killed and eaten as we do with livestock and poultry in this country, but the brutally inhumane methods of caging and killing these innocent animals are stomach churning to say the least.

This is extremely difficult for me as I have two shelter cats that I love dearly. Just imagine someone trying to harm your children in this way, and you have some idea how horrible this is, and why I feel so strongly about it.

If you see or get petitions to oppose this terrible cruelty, please sign them to add your voice to those trying to protect these animals from being killed in these horrible ways. They can’t speak up for themselves, only we can, AND WE MUST! . Thank you for listening, and for caring…

I got an email message from one of my readers who is recovering from lung cancer. She told me about the personal nutritional regimen she was on and asked me if I had any additional information that could help her.

Let me start out by saying that nothing I write here should be used in place of  medical care you receive from your doctor. I am not promoting cures or advising you not to seek proper medical help for your health problems.

With that said, let me share a few things with you in regard to cancer.

***

First, tumors (because of their dysfunctional energy metabolism) have a voracious appetite for sugar. If you have cancer of any kind you MUST try and eliminate as much refined sugar from your diet as possible.

If you have cancer, eating sugar is like throwing gasoline on a fire. Don’t do it! It will only make the cancer progress faster, and prevent your recovery.

***
The second issue involves a gene called MTHFR, which drives inflammation by improperly “methylating” certain substances in your body.  This gene (and it’s effects) can be modified by using a nutritional supplement called a “methyl donor.”

You can read abut this gene on my webpage here:

http://www.longevity-and-antiaging-secrets.com/MTHFR-mutation.html

I have also included a link to a methyl donor product that I have used for this purpose.

***

Another thing I would caution you on is the use of the drug acetaminophen (brand name Tylenol) This drug depletes something called “glutathione” from your system. Since glutathione is the primary cellular antioixidant that protects cells from cancer, you do not
want to take any substance that depletes it.

So avoid Tylenol even if you are healthy!

***

It goes without saying that nutritional support is absolutely ESSENTIAL in recovering from cancer. With that, I would strongly recommend you check out this book. It’s called: “Beating Cancer With Nutrition.”

http://www.age-better.info/Beating-Cancer-With-Nutrition

It’s written by Dr. Patrick Quillin, PhD,RD,CNS.  Dr. Quillen was the chief of nutritional support for Cancer Treatment Centers of America, a group of hospitals that focus on integrative cancer treatment, which combines both conventional and alternative treatment protocols for cancer.

You don’t get any more authoritative than this guy, and his book received 4.5 stars over 174 customer reviews. The book is also available as a Kindle download so you can get it anywhere in the world! If you or a loved one is dealing with cancer of any kind, then you need to read this book. It covers all the aspects of diet and nutrition you need to support recovery from cancer!

***

The last thing I would add to this is “grounding!” Because it is so simple, effective, and will not interfere with any other kind of treatment, it’s something that everyone (not just cancer patients) should be doing.

Here is my page on grounding:

http://www.longevity-and-antiaging-secrets.com/body-grounding.html

I’ve given you a lot of information to process, but use this as a basis to do further research on your own. There is no substitute for a person with cancer or any other disease taking responsibility for their own health and recovery.

Don’t be a passive recipient of medical treatment. Be actively engaged in healing yourself!

#~#~#

Do you have a disease, or other medical condition you or someone close to you is suffering from that you would like me to research and write about? Then please let me know. I can’t give medical advice because I am not a doctor.

But I CAN research things and look for the most cutting edge information and research on that topic and present it to you and everyone who reads this newsletter. On a lighter note, Mary Fahl is one of the best voices in pop music today (some say THE best)! Here is a clip of her singing a song called “Ariel.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCMrGLkwjAw

For those of you who have never heard of her, she was the lead singer for a group called “October Project.” They recorded two excellent CD’s before she left the group and went solo. I’ve often said that if I were marooned on a desert island and could only have one CD with me, “October Project” would be the one!

Age Better #27 – The 3 Golden Rules of Exercise and a Great New Hydration Product!

Things in the Boston area have finally quieted down now, and the Boston
Marathon bombing story has come to a close. It appears as though two young
Chechen brothers were responsible. I say “appears” because I doubt we
will ever know the real truth!

Several communities in the greater Boston area were locked down as police
searched for the suspects. I have a feeling that we will never know the
full story about why these two individuals did what they are alleged to
have done.

Life is returning back to normal, but the lingering fears, and emotions
over the bombing, and the impact on our community will be there for a long
time to come. I hope that we will never see another tragedy like this one,
but only time will tell.

Since spring has officially sprung, many people have taken to exercise in
hopes of losing their winter fat and looking good for the beach. Many
people get exercise wrong because they assume that more is better, and that
is definitely NOT the case.

Another mistake is doing long slow cardio exercise. This causes your stress
hormone levels to increase and actually works against you when you are
trying to lose fat and build muscle.

When it comes to exercise for fitness and health, there are several rules
to keep in mind for safe and effective exercise.

1. ) Exercise should be intense and brief. Interval training, Heavyhands,
and kettlebell work are all examples of healthy exercise, that will burn
fat and get you fitter and stronger. Long slow cardio and marathon workouts
are out. The long slow approach can actually cause your stress hormone
levels to go up, which will make it more difficult to drop fat.

2.)  Exercise should be progressive, meaning your performance should
improve over the weeks and months that you do your exercise program. You
should very gradually increase the intensity of your workout, but always at
a pace that you can comfortably sustain.

3. ) Exercise should never be overdone. Always finish your exercise program
with strength and energy to spare, and keep those gradual improvements
coming over time. This will ensure that you stay healthy and injury free.

Forget all the hype about insane workouts that leave you exhausted on the
floor, nauseous, or incredibly sore the next day. If you are not a world
class or elite level athlete, you have no business exercising at that
ultra-intensity. It’s just not healthy!

Exercise sessions should be between 10 minutes to no longer than 45 minutes
for non-athletes. For general health and fitness I would say that 15-30
minutes would be best. It depends on your level of fitness, your age,
medical condition ect.

Always play it safe with exercise, because there is no advantage to
training too hard. You only increase your chances of injury, and burning
out physically and mentally. If you are over 40 or have a medical
condition, check with your doctors to make sure you can exercise at a
reasonable intensity.

Remember that a good exercise program will allow you to gradually improve
your level of fitness, while avoiding injury, and not making you feel bad
in the process!

I have been using a new product recently to help with hydration, and I must
say I am really impressed by it. It’s called “Nuun Optimal Hydration”
tablets. These are effervescent tablets that you add to 16 ounces of water
to make a flavored hydrating drink.

This product in my experience, seems to make it easier to drink more water,
because of the flavors and vitamins/minerals that it contains. It helps
replenish electrolyte levels in your body, when you are thirsty and active.

Here is the link:     Nunn Hydration Products

They don’t have an affiliate program, so I don’t get a commission, but I am
recommending it anyway just because I think it’s really good product and it
does exactly what it says it does, helps keep you hydrated when you are
active.

The website will give you more information and tell you where you can buy
it! If you try this product, let me know what you think.

For those of you into movies set in a particular time period, check out
“Mullholland Falls,” starring Nick Nolte and Chaz Palminteri. This film
set in the early 1950′s Los Angeles is a murder mystery that spawned a
short lived TV show called “The Hat Squad”

Here is a clip from the film:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeDUBK-Sc_4

The film is well shot and acted, and the music although not really accurate
for this time period is hauntingly beautiful. You can watch the entire film
on Youtube, here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSfkRHLhK30

The film features Nick Nolte as Max Hoover, the head of an LA police unit
investigating a murder and coverup that involves the US Atomic Energy
commission. It also stars John Malcovich as an ARMY general, and Melanie
Griffith as Hoover’s wife.

I loved the look and feel of this film, and Nolte is perfect as the
“tough as nails” detective Max Hoover. Check it out…I think you will
really enjoy it.

Mary Fahl is probably my favorite singer in the popular/folk music genre.
Formerly with the group “October Project” she has one of the best

Age Better #23 – The 4 Hour Workweek, vitamin-D3, and Victor Victoria

know this is an antiaging and wellness newsletter, but at times I like to
delve into other areas that I know are important to you, because health and
success go hand in hand. You CAN be healthy on a budget, but financial
success makes living life much easier, and certainly far less stressful.

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”  You have
probably heard this quote a number of times, but I wanted to reflect on it
a bit, because the main reason why people find success difficult is that
they can’t bring themselves to get started.

I have a name for this, that I call “foot of the mountain syndrome.”
It’s like standing at the bottom of a mountain you have to climb, looking
up at the towering mountain, and thinking about how difficult it will be to
climb.

The goal or task seems overwhelming to you and so there is procrastination,
and just a hesitancy to begin. Many people (myself included) face this
problem, and to be truly successful in any area of your life, you have to
find a way to overcome this problem.

You will find your tasks and projects much easier to cope with, when you
can get yourself to start, to take that first step, and develop some
momentum toward your goal.

If you have a large project, then break it down into small tasks that you
can handle and focus on each one until you have finished it. Then move on
to the next task. Don’t feel you have to tackle everything at once, just
start and take each part to completion.

Another problem is the feeling that you cannot do something because you are
not an “expert” or you feel you are not good enough because you compare
yourself to others, and they seem so much better than you.

This is another idea that sabotages our success. If you have the desire to
achieve something but don’t have the necessary expertise, there are many
people out there that will teach or train you in the necessary skills.

The most successful people are not necessarily the ones who are ultimate
experts, but rather they are experts on how to get themselves to start and
follow through. In many cases they outsource part of their project to
others who ARE experts.

This is how many people handle complex tasks, and move forward towards
their goals. With that said, there is a book I recommend you read that
describes this process of outsourcing.

It’s called “The Four Hour Work Week.” and it got 4.5 out of 5 stars
with over 1500 reviews!

http://www.age-better.info/4-hour-workweek

This is one of the most interesting books I’ve ever read, and really…it’s
not about only working four hours per week, but rather making the most of
your time so that you can work less but actually achieve more.

Written by Tim Ferris (author of The Four Hour Body) it’s chock full of
ideas and resources that can help you be more efficient and productive,
whether you are a CEO, a small business owner, or an individual just
wanting to do more with less effort.

This is definitely well worth reading!

I got  pleasant surprise this week. Seems like my testosterone levels got
kicked up a notch (always a good thing!) I was at a loss to explain this,
but the most likely candidate is the new vitamin-d supplement I am taking.

It’s made by Jarrow Formulas, and you know from past newsletters that I
think highly of their supplement line as far as potency and quality.  With
that said here is the link to the  product I am using now…

http://www.age-better.info/Jarrow-vitamin-D3

Vitamin-D3  (it’s actually a hormone called Cholecalciferol, not a vitamin)
is essential for your body for the following reasons:

promotes better bone density

used to make other important hormones like testosterone

important for a healthy immune system

important in preventing diabetes

deficiency of vitamin-d raises cholesterol levels

If you are deficient, it takes weeks to get the levels up to where they
should be, but it’s critically important for your overall health and
longevity. In the summer if you are getting at least 20 minutes per day of
full body sun exposure, you likely won’t need to supplement your
vitamin-D3, because your body will bio-synthesize it from the effect of
sunlight on your skin.

In the colder months, one to two gelcaps per day with meals should be
adequate for your needs, but as always, check with your doctor first if you
are being treated with any medication or have any serious health problem.

One of my favorite romantic comedies is a film called “Victor
Victoria.” Years ago my mother urged me to see this film, and I basically
showed little interest but eventually got around to seeing it, and I was
blown away!

This movie gets everything right, the plot, the humor, great performances
from great actors and actresses ect. It received 7 Oscar nominations and
won best musical score!

Here is a trailer on Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APuLUq1k4Rs

It stars the iconic Julie Andrews, James Garner, theater legend Robert
Preston, with strong supporting performances by Alex Karras and Ann
Margaret. If you can manage to rent it online or find it on DVD, you will
thoroughly enjoy it!

I just want to close this newsletter by talking about the innate creative
power that we all have, and why it’s so important for us to use it. I
believe that or purpose on this Earth is to find happiness by creating the
things that give us the most joy.

When the founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence, this is
what they meant by “inalienable rights” and the freedom of expression
they wrote into the Constitution.

We all have such diverse and unique talents and potentials, and when we
develop these, society benefits in the form of new ideas, new solutions to
problems, and more wealth (financial, spiritual, cultural, ect.) that
springs from this creative force in all of us.

Whatever it is that you desire to do, whatever dreams you have, find a way
to take that step, to move forward and accomplish your goals. Remember that
when you dream, plan, and create, you are fulfilling your true destiny.

Age Better #21 – Wake up your life with these three great choline products

Spring has sprung…literally! I have a brand new grand nephew. His name is
Tyler James. He’s a bit over 8lbs and 21 inches, and is as cute as they come!

Wow, talk about feeling old…I remember distinctly holding my nephew
Andrew when he was just hours old, and now him and his wife Sheena are
proud parents of a brand new baby boy! I don’t know where the years go, but
I know I want many more of them.

This is a brand new life with all sorts of wonderful possibilities, and
again just like my feelings when Morgan Joseph was born, I hope the world
goes in a more positive direction for my two new grand nephews.

I will tell my nephew to be cautious and informed about what’s called the
“vaccine schedule” With the rate of autism now at 1 in 84 and still
rising, we need to view this expanded vaccine schedule with extreme caution
and get the facts before just accepting the word of “experts.”

“It’s tough to get old!” How many times have you heard that said, but
it’s very true. I notice it myself even though I eat right and exercise, I
don’t have the energy I had when I was 20…YET!

My interest in antiaging is among other things a “self interest.”
Nobody, (least of all me) want to age, and up until now we had absolutely
no choice in the matter. But things change, even things we thought would
NEVER change can and do.

We are on the verge of making serious progress into slowing and possibly
even reversing aging (in certain areas of our health.) We are not quite
there yet, but why wait until something is 100% perfect before implementing
it into your lifestyle?

This brings me to my latest product recommendation. It’s something I use
myself and feel is very effective. But first let me tell you about one of
the most widespread deficiencies in our modern era, “choline!”

Choline is a B-vitamin that our body uses to make acetylcholine, a
“neurotransmitter” that’s absolutely vital for your brain and nervous
system to work properly. Choline deficiency can bring on acetylcholine
deficiency, which can lead to Alzheimer’s disease.

A deficiency of choline can also be a factor in heart disease and liver
dysfunction as well as neurological problems.

The most abundant source of choline in our diet is eggs, but guess
what…people have been scared off eating eggs because of exaggerated fear
of cholesterol (another essential nutrient!) This has led to widespread
deficiency of choline in our population.

Here is my page on choline:

http://www.longevity-and-antiaging-secrets.com/benefits-of-choline.html

You can get choline in these foods:

Almonds
Beef
Broccoli
Cabbage
Eggs
Fish
Liver
Turkey
Avocado
Pork
Shrimp
Chicken
Cheese
Try adding some of these foods to your diet and see if they help before
taking choline in supplement form.

You can get choline in supplement form either in a specific formulation of
choline OR in a formula which that choline plus other nutrients and is used
to boost your levels of acetylcholine.

Three products stand out:

ALPHA GPC by Jarrow Formulas – http://www.age-better.info/alpha-gpc

Fast Brain by Poliquin Performance – http://www.age-better.info/fast-brain

Brain Quicken by Tim Ferris – http://www.age-better.info/brain-quicken

I have used all of these products and they are good quality and worked
quite well for me.

Alpha GPC is not a stimulant or energy pill, it is just a choline
supplement, but a very good one that will help with focus, and enhancing
the health of your nervous system.

Fast Brain and Brain Quicken use multiple ingredients to help boost
acetylcholine levels. You should notice an effect similar to Alpha GPC,
only a bit stronger.

I would recommend you use as little as it takes to have a positive effect.
For me that’s only one capsule per day, and sometimes I only take it on the
days that I work out hard, or really feel I need to focus and concentrate
on a task.

I would caution that if you have a heart condition, have any serious
medical problem, or are over 40 or so, that you check with your doctor
before using any of these products, just to be on the safe side.

These products I feel are a healthier alternative to caffeine and can
restore some of the performance that your nervous system has lost with age.
But again…always use caution, and if you don’t feel right using any
product, do not continue to take it.

I find the most interesting things on Youtube, and today I came across a
channel called “Jay Leno’s Garage.” Apparently Jay Leno the host of the
Tonight Show loves collecting cars and has some pretty exotic vehicles in
his collection.

I guess when you have the kind of money he does, you can spend it on your
own private car collection. Some of the cars are very pricey, but again,
for a multi-millionaire this is not a problem. He really enjoys collecting
and driving various automobiles.

Although I’m not crazy about cars, I found it interesting just the same.
Check out Jay Leno’s Garage at this link:

While searching on Google, I happened upon a story called “The Cab Ride
I’ll Never Forget.” Reading this story reminded me that very often it’s
the little things we do that can make a positive impact on someone’s life.

It doesn’t have to be big and monumental. Just a moment of kindness and
compassion that really makes the difference to another person. My folks
tried to impress this on me when I was younger, but I didn’t get it back
then. I do now…

Read the story at this link and you will understand what I mean.

Age Better #19 – The sugar that’s good for your teeth

It’s a good thing that spring is just around the corner. I’ve had enough of
snow and sub freezing temperatures for the year thank you! I know my cats
feel the same way, because they love basking in the sun on my indoor porch
whenever they can.

I’ve managed to stay healthy this winter, thanks to eating well, staying
grounded and my RIFE therapy setup (which I will be explaining in an
upcoming newsletter. ) My thinking about how to stay healthy has changed.

I have become aware that cell energy really is the key to health. When your
cell energy is low, health suffers. When it’s high, you  health soars. I’m
learning  more about this every day and will be sharing what I discover
with you very soon.

The one thing you should always do is to “think outside the box,”
because this is where you will find the answers you are looking for. I just
wish someone had taught me this when I was young, as it would have
saved me quite a bit of trouble!

I just got finished watching the Oscars and realized that I haven’t seen
ANY of the pictures that were nominated for awards. I guess I need to get
out more. I also realized how many famous actors and actresses no longer
with us, which is sad.

I know that today’s actors and actresses are just as good as those of times
past, but they don’t seem to be the iconic “movie stars” like those
legendary Hollywood actors of the golden era.

I’m old enough to remember actors like Clark Gable, Betty Davis, Jimmy
Stewart and Liz Taylor when they were in their heyday. That was the golden
era of Hollywood and as far as I am concerned will never be equaled.

However it also seems that the Oscars are now more representative of actors
from all over the world, which I think is pretty awesome. Actors from other
countries and cultures are doing some exciting things in film and I  think
we will all be treated to many great performances in the years to come.

#~#~#

Now I want to tell you about a sugar that is actually GOOD for you! Yeah,
you heard that right. It’s called “Xylitol,” and it’s something you will be
hearing more about in the near future. It’s safe, natural, and does some
really good things in the body.

Xylitol is actually a sugar alcohol, which is extracted from plants, mostly
trees and corn. Native American’s used to used to chew tree bark to keep
their teeth and gums healthy. I don’t think the taste was very good, but we
know that the bark contained the sugar we call Xylitol.

It’s a safe sugar substitute, but it also has health benefits as well.
Here are the stats on this amazing sugar:

Can prevent cavities
Can lower risk of heart disease
40% fewer calories than table sugar
75% less carbohydrates than table sugar
Inhibits plaque formation on teeth
Helps re-mineralize damaged tooth enamel
Prevents demineralization of healthy teeth
Maintains healthy PH levels / inhibits acidty
Does not spike insulin levels
Does not cause elevations in blood sugar
Safe for diabetics
Looks, cooks, and tastes just like sugar

I highly recommend that you check out and use Xylitol. Since I have a corn
allergy, I used the kind that’s extracted from trees. The only problem it
has a “laxative” effect if you use large amounts of it. So go easy on
the amounts you use.

http://www.xylitolusa.com/

The product I use is called “Xyla” and it’s extracted from hardwood
trees grown in the US. I like this because again…I don’t react well to
corn, or any products extracted from corn. Thus “Xyla” works well for
me.

You can find a list of stores that carry Xyla at this link:

http://www.xylitolcanada.com/store-listing

With all the good things Xylitol does, it’s definitely something that
belongs in your health and wellness toolbox!

I just wanted to mention something about diet and weight issues. I don’t
want to trivialize this subject because I know it’s difficult for lots of people,
but really…it’s all about how many carbs your metabolism can cope with on
a daily basis.

If you get this right, everything else falls into place. Carbs (processed
and high glycemic) cause elevations in insulin. Insulin is a fat storing
hormone. When you lower the processed carbs you are eating, your insulin
levels are lower and you lose weight!

I will write about this more in a future newsletter, but a good rule of
thumb is to keep carbohydrates to 150 grams per day or less. That will help
you lose weight and keep it off. It will work even without exercise,
although exercise makes it work much better.

Last time I shared one of my favorite singers (Julia Fordham) with you.
This time I would like you to check out “Anuna,” which is a great
choral group from Ireland.

What’s interesting is that according to Michael McGlynn (Anuna’s musical
director) Ireland has no native historic choral tradition, which really
surprised me!

McGlynn took fragments of Medieval Irish music and created arrangements
for the group. The effect is stunning. Anuna first came to public attention
when they toured with Riverdance. They are still together and making
great music!

Here is a video clip of one of my favorites:

Let me know how you like it…

This week’s quote is from Gail Devers:

“Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith
and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication.
Remember all things are possible for those who believe.”

Every great achievement begins with a thought…a vision, and only
becomes reality when we act on it!

Age Better Newsletter #17:  How Stress Kills…

I wish I had a dollar for each time I’ve heard that “stress kills.” But
very few people actually understand how and why this is true and what can
be done about it.

We’ve all experienced being under stress, but now I’m going to explain just
how it does damage!

When you are under stress your body pumps out a hormone called
“cortisol,” that is your body’s natural form of  the anti-inflammatory cortisone.

For a short period of time this is not a problem, but if it lasts and is chronic,
it causes big problems.

What kind of problems? How about:

Diabetes
Heart Disease
Cancer
Alzheimer’s Disease
Strokes

All these result from inflammation and something called “oxidative
stress.” You get a double whammy here. Damage from cortisol and also
damage from inflammation well as oxidative stress.

Cortisol is a response by your body to stress which in pre-historic times
meant physical danger. It prepares your body to fight or flee, by raising
your blood sugar to supply the necessary energy to cope with the danger.

Over time if cortisol stays high, it starts breaking down your tissues to
convert them into glucose (sugar.)  It can break down muscle tissue, bone,
and even shrink your brain!

Oxidative stress interferes with energy production in mitochondria which
damages your DNA. This can lead to heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and
cancer.

OK, we know it’s bad, but what do we do?  Stress management has 3 parts:

Eliminate the stressor (the thing causing the stress) – I would suggest
trying the “speed trace” which is mentioned on my page about stress.
The link is on my stress page.

Restore balance to the autonomic nervous system – “body grounding” is
great for this, and is also mentioned on my stress page

Protect against inflammation – eat a low or no grain diet, get omega 3
fats, and antioxidants in your food and in supplement form

Here is a link to my web page, where you will find several ways of
alleviating stress:

http://www.longevity-and-antiaging-secrets.com/how-to-reduce-stress.html

This is a really important topic and probably needs an ebook to deal with
it adequately. This is something I will be writing at some point in the
future.

The good news is that a few simple strategies will put you on the path to
less stress and more health and happiness!

I have a couple of cool products to recommend for a bit more energy and
focus. However if you have any heart health issues, I would check with your
doctor before taking them.

These products affect something called the “cholinergic system” which
is involved with all aspects of your mental performance like thinking and
memory.

The links below are just for your convenience. I don’t have any affiliate
relationship with either product, that is…I don’t make any money
recommending either of them.

I just think they are great products based on my personal experience.

The first is called “Fast Brain” and helps with mental clarity, focus,
drive, and memory

http://us.cpoliquin.com/product_p/fast%20brain%202.0.htm

The second is called “Brain Quicken” and does essentially the same thing.
Since it’s good to rotate supplements from time to time, I alternate
between these two.

http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/bq/body.html

I have used both these products and I really think they are worthwhile for
the increased focus, mental drive, and clarity they produce. I also noticed
more energy and increased strength in workouts.

Neither product contains caffeine or other stimulants. But again…you
should check with your doctor if you are older, have a medical condition,
or are on any medications, just to be on the safe side.

Let me know if you have a question on either of them…

I watched a great film on Youtube this week called “Seven Days in May.”
It’s loosely based on an allegedly true story of an attempted overthrow of
the United States government.

You can watch the entire film at this link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sFj7b1c60U

The film was released in1964, and starred Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster,
Ava Gardner, and Fredrick March. Rod Serling wrote the excellent
screenplay and John Frankenheimer directed it.

It’s alleged that the Pentagon didn’t want the film made, but JFK actually
believed that such a scenario was possible given the same circumstances,
and actually allowed the film company to shoot outside the White House.

Whether you believe a scenario like this is far fetched or not, it’s a great
film with great performances by these legendary actors. Do yourself a
favor and watch “Seven Days in May.” I know you will enjoy it!

It’s taken me all of my adult life to figure out that happiness comes from the
knowledge that I am moving forward, and that the future can be better than
the past if only I have the courage to press on to achieve my dreams.

I feel that we are living through some scary and difficult times. It’s easy
to get caught up in the cycle of negativity and I have been guilty of this
myself.

I think the key is to focus on what you want to accomplish and
continually move towards it no matter what!

I wanted to leave you with a quote that will put this in perspective.

“Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still
plant my apple tree.” – Martin Luther

Age Better #14: Fight Colds and Flu with Hydrogen Peroxide

We are half way through January and the winter has been mild so far. Six
weeks and we are looking at spring just around the corner. However flu
season is upon us and we are being told to get that “flu shot.”

You might want to take some time to think about that before you do. The
flu vaccine incorporates last year’s strains because this years are just
hitting us. It’s therefore debatable whether these shots help at all.

I’ve never gotten flu shots, and have only had the flu once in the last 15
years. I felt a bit run down one Sunday evening but instead of resting, I
went to the gym and trained VERY hard.

Well as you can imagine, my immune system took a hit and I got sick.

I’ve since learned not to repeat that mistake.  So…when you are feeling
not quite 100%, don’t exercise intensely, especially in the winter. While
exercise is generally good, it does weaken your immune system and leave
you open to colds and flu.

If you feel something “coming on” there is something you can do. Get
some food grade hydrogen peroxide and put a few drops in each ear. This
does not hurt. It will just make a bubbling sound as the peroxide reacts.

Do one ear at a time, and lay down on each side so the peroxide does not
leak out. Hold it in there for several minutes and then let it leak out onto
a tissue.

Repeat this for each ear. You can do this one or twice a week when
you notice signs of a cold or flu coming on. You can even do this once per
week during flu season as a preventative strategy.

You can find hydrogen peroxide at any drugstore, but just don’t ever take
hydrogen peroxide internally though.

I have a policy with my newsletter not to get involved with political topics,
because as you can imagine people have strong feelings about them and
it’s easy to alienate others this way.

However I would just like to say a few words about our current issues.

We are living in very uncertain times and face many difficult issues and
choices. Just remember that the media tends to focus on the bad news
and tragic events, as good news just doesn’t sell the way bad news does.

However there is plenty of good news out there. America’s energy future
looks much brighter, online education, lead by Harvard and M.I.T. promises
to make higher education available to vastly more people.

We are starting to get a handle on our obesity problems as a nation, and I
think we have the information we need to turn the corner and start living
healthier lifestyles. It’s not all bad….not by a longshot!

The problem is that the rapid advancements in all areas of science don’t
get reported on a daily basis to the public. I see some of it because I
research a lot of online sources, but most people don’t.

Even I am amazed at how fast we are progressing!

If you want to look up short abstracts (research reports) on particular
topics in health and medicine, there is a site you should go to called
“PubMed”

“PubMed comprises more than 22 million citations for biomedical literature
from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Citations may
include links to full-text content from PubMed Central and publisher
web sites.”

Here is the link…

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed

Take heart, we can and will solve our problems as a society. We just need
to have faith in ourselves, in our own intelligence, and determination to
make the world a better place for us and our children.

NaPCA……..

I talked about this product in an earlier newsletter, and wanted to mention
it again. It’s called NaPCA, and it’s made by Twinlab.  I have used this stuff
for over 25 years, and it rocks!

It puts back the natural moisture that age and weather takes out of your
skin. It’s also acts as a “humectant” which means it draws moisture to your
skin from the air around you…pretty cool!

Using this stuff I can shave without getting cut, and it seems to give the
skin a nice glow. It comes in two forms, plain and with added Aloe Vera.
Either will work well, but I like the Aloe version the best.

It’s especially helpful in winter as the cold dry air tends to deplete the
natural moisture from your skin.

Check it out here…    http://www.age-better.info/NaPCA

Curiosity got the better of me and I finally rented “The Dark Knight Rises.”
To be honest it was nowhere near as violent as I had anticipated, although
it has some intense moments.

The Batman trilogy is dark as this is the way the character of Batman was
written in the comics. The storyline was massively implausible, even for the
sci-fi/superhero genre. I felt the plot was a bit convoluted and some things
in the movie just didn’t fit in.

Christian Bale reprises his role as the Dark Knight (Batman) and squares
off against his ultra nemesis, a drug fueled psychopathic anarchist named
“Bain,” who beats Batman to a pulp and seriously injures him.

The way Batman comes back from this injury to face Bain once again just
isn’t believable, even for a science fiction film! I won’t reveal the ending,
but for me, the film falls short of the other two for the above reasons.

However, if you are a fan of the superhero genre and Batman in particular,
you will still want to see this film. The action, sets, and pace still deliver,
even if I felt the plot had some shortcomings.

The Dark Night Rises is not suitable for younger viewers though.
