Follow the money! That’s the advice my lawyer used to give me for trying to make sense out of the actions of government and politicians. Always question the policies that are being advocated, and try to find who benefits and why.

You can apply this to everything that happens in society, but in our case we need to apply it to  an understanding of public health policy and what really drives it. I see thing almost daily in the media that I know instinctively are wrong.

For instance that fish oil is supposedly dangerous, vitamin supplements are worthless, vaccines are safe, cholesterol drugs make you healthier ect.  There is an agenda that underlies all these statements, that involves powerful corporate interests and money.

Usually these issues are brought to light by what we call “muckrakers” which are people who expose corporate wrongdoing and public malfeasance. There is always an element of doubt in their claims because they are usually outsiders who are not part of the industries they are criticizing.

Every once in a while someone comes along who has inside knowledge of an industry and it’s abuses, and steps up to blow the whistle on the corruption they witness around them. Such an individual is Dr. John Abramson M.D.

Dr. Abramson estimates that approximately 80% of prescription drug use in the United States is unnecessary! Yes…that’s right…80%! Dr. Abramson took a year off from his medical practice to research and write a book about this.

This book was rated 5 stars over 82 reader reviews, some of those five star reviews were from other doctors! Pretty impressive. It lays bare the dirty secrets of the pharmaceutical industry, how it unduly influences medicine, misinforms doctors, and needlessly puts patients at risk.

In this book you will learn how drug companies hid some of the facts about the side effects of their drugs as “trade secrets.” This means that your doctor could potentially prescribe a drug to you that has side effects that he or she does not even know about!

You will also learn how the drug industry funds the very research being done to determine whether their products are safe and effective. This is a clear conflict of interest that Dr. Abramson exposes in his book!

Doctor Abramson is a family practice physician from Massachusetts, who is affiliated with Harvard Medical School and has solid mainstream medical credentials. This fact makes the revelations in the book all the more convincing.

You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to read this book. Armed with facts and the truth, you can make better decisions about your health care and the role of prescription medications in it.

I have been a fan of American rocker Tod Rundgren for many years, but I was not aware of this amazing concert he did with the Metropole Orchestra in Amsterdam. This is a duet he did with Dutch singer Mathilde Santing (who is new to me).

Truisms about in the field of health and nutrition. We have been told for years now that we need calcium to prevent osteoporosis, but recent evidence suggests that taking extra calcium may not be all that healthy. In fact it may even raise your risk of heart disease!

Calcium has to be balanced with magnesium to be absorbed properly. There also has to be adequate vitamin-d levels for calcium to be assimilated properly. Recent evidence indicates that an imbalance of calcium can increase your risk of heart disease.

I love science fiction, especially the “super hero” genre. I just saw the “man of Steel” the 2013 version of the Superman saga. I had heard pro and con about this film, but I have to say I was quite impressed by this film.

The film was directed by Zack Snyder and stars Henry Cavill as Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Cavill’s Superman though different than Chris Reeves, retains the essence of who and what Superman is.

He presents a deeply principled individual of great power who understands the necessity of restraint. He is (just like Chris Reeves) the consummate gentleman, who puts the well being of others before himself. This is the kind of selfless persona that you expect from this character.

Lois Lane played by Amy Adams is a far cry from the previous versions of that character. She is tough and resourceful in her own way and gets into the action, helping Superman escape from captivity by General Zod.  Adams in my view does a great job with this iconic character!

The action sequences are mind blowing thanks to state of the art CGI. The villains (General Zod and company) seem harsher and more violent than in past films, and the ending which I will not give away, follows this pattern.

If you are up for a good time at the movies, I would highly recommend “Man of Steel.” It’s great fun and will not disappoint.

Do you remember Vanessa Williams? She was the first “black” Miss America and had to give up the title because it was found that she had posed nude years before, and the pictures surfaced and caused a scandal.

She rebounded from this experience to become the most successful entertainer of any former Miss America.

She recorded a music video for the song called “Save The Best For Last.”

I opened my Facebook page this morning only to be greeted by something that made me very sad and incredibly angry at the same time. It was the page of an organization that documents animal cruelty in Asia.

In Asia dog and cats are killed and eaten as we do with livestock and poultry in this country, but the brutally inhumane methods of caging and killing these innocent animals are stomach churning to say the least.

This is extremely difficult for me as I have two shelter cats that I love dearly. Just imagine someone trying to harm your children in this way, and you have some idea how horrible this is, and why I feel so strongly about it.

If you see or get petitions to oppose this terrible cruelty, please sign them to add your voice to those trying to protect these animals from being killed in these horrible ways. They can’t speak up for themselves, only we can, AND WE MUST! . Thank you for listening, and for caring…

I got an email message from one of my readers who is recovering from lung cancer. She told me about the personal nutritional regimen she was on and asked me if I had any additional information that could help her.

Let me start out by saying that nothing I write here should be used in place of  medical care you receive from your doctor. I am not promoting cures or advising you not to seek proper medical help for your health problems.

With that said, let me share a few things with you in regard to cancer.

First, tumors (because of their dysfunctional energy metabolism) have a voracious appetite for sugar. If you have cancer of any kind you MUST try and eliminate as much refined sugar from your diet as possible.

If you have cancer, eating sugar is like throwing gasoline on a fire. Don’t do it! It will only make the cancer progress faster, and prevent your recovery.

The second issue involves a gene called MTHFR, which drives inflammation by improperly “methylating” certain substances in your body.  This gene (and it’s effects) can be modified by using a nutritional supplement called a “methyl donor.”

Another thing I would caution you on is the use of the drug acetaminophen (brand name Tylenol) This drug depletes something called “glutathione” from your system. Since glutathione is the primary cellular antioixidant that protects cells from cancer, you do not
want to take any substance that depletes it.

So avoid Tylenol even if you are healthy!

It goes without saying that nutritional support is absolutely ESSENTIAL in recovering from cancer. With that, I would strongly recommend you check out this book. It’s called: “Beating Cancer With Nutrition.”

The last thing I would add to this is “grounding!” Because it is so simple, effective, and will not interfere with any other kind of treatment, it’s something that everyone (not just cancer patients) should be doing.

As I write this a parade, our local  “Memorial Day Parade” is passing right by my doorstep. It’s a reminder that we honor those who have made sacrifices for our country, for it’s liberty and sovereignty.

That spirit of self sacrifice is absolutely essential for ANY free society to survive and prosper. It seems to be sadly lacking in our present day, and we would be wise to understand that without it, we can’t survive as a nation or as a civilization.

At the end of the day, it’s not about parades, cookouts, or fireworks, but about the commitment each of us has to act with integrity and honor in everything we do. That’s the only thing that can turn this country around. It’s what we owe not only to our veterans, but to each other as well!

Sometimes we think we KNOW things because we have heard them so many times we reason that they MUST be true! This is the case with the myth of “cholesterol and heart disease.” I call it a myth, because it rests on a foundation of faulty science and dangerous half-truths.

When I was young (around 10 years old), there was a television series called “One Step Beyond” which was about the supernatural that scared me quite a bit. I remember that the music and the narrator seemed very creepy to me, and the stories were said to be true!

In fact even now at age 58, when I hear the music, I still get goosebumps.  There was no blood and gore in this program, but it managed to get under my skin in a big way. It scared you not with violence, blood or monsters, but by suggestion and mystery.

I enjoy sharing the musical artists I have found online with you. There’s so much awesome talent out there that has yet to be “mainstreamed” and discovered by a wider audience. So many gems to be found, and enjoyed.

Also, music is a form of sound, which has positive energy and is healthy for the body. Did you know for instance that conductors of orchestras have the longest life spans of ANY profession?

Part of the reason is the way they use their arms which is a very healthy way to exercise, and reduce their risk of heart disease. The other is that they work doing something they absolutely love each and every day…MUSIC!

Age Better #24 – Beating Cancer With Nutrition, Pandora, and Enjoying Joni Mitchell

This newsletter is late as I was on the road for the past few days. Yes, I
could write it from my hotel room, but really would rather be at home and
not rushed when I write so, here it is, better late than never.

I got a call from an old friend of my Dad’s who informed me that his wife
has ovarian cancer. I am not sure why he called to tell me, but I get the
feeling he was kind of asking for help, or at least some good advice.

I fought the temptation to inundate him with information and just gave him
some simple strategies to help her feel better. As time goes on, I will
share with him some of what I am writing about today.

Cancer is on the rise in our current times due to toxins in our
environment, and lack of nutrition in our diets. Cancer is a sign of bad
cellular metabolism, so to prevent it, we need to promote healthy cell
energy. Sounds simple, and for the most part…it is.

What are the steps to prevent this disease?

Logically, here is what I would do:

Eat for your blood type, and eat an anti-inflammatory diet.  There’s more

Keep insulin LOW! I can’t say this enough. Insulin is to cancer what
gasoline is to fire. Got it? If you have elevated insulin because you are
eating too much sugar/simple carbs, you run a greater risk of cancer.

Insulin is tremendously inflammatory, and also causes accelerated cell
division. Two things you DON’T want if you want to avoid the “BIG-C.”
If you already have cancer, sugar will feed it. So you MUST keep sugar in
your diet as low as possible.

Keep cell energy high by using what Dr. Stephen Sinatra calls “the
awesome foursome” nutrients that are part of his “Metabolic
Cardiology” protocol.

magnesium, d-ribose, coenzyme-q10, and carnitine

Ever heard of Pandora? No…not the mythical jungle planet from the movie
Avatar. I’m talking about the music site where you can get channels based
upon the music that you like.

This is called “The Music Genome Project.”

It’s free, and you can listen to some wonderful music. I have channels for
choral music, movies soundtracks, pop, new age, ect.  Music which is of
course made up of sounds has beneficial effects on your brain and possibly
even your DNA.

Russian scientists recently found that the “DNA” that western
scientists call “junk DNA” because it seemingly had no purpose can
actually be “programmed!” This is positively amazing, and suggests to
me that we have far more control over our destiny than we previously
imagined.

I believe that music can help “reprogram” our DNA so to speak and lead
to greater health and well being. All we need to do is listen…

Music is a form of coherent sound energy. It is organized rather than
chaotic, and thus has positive effects on your body and mind. I would
suggest that you listen to both popular and classical, and include music
from when you were in the prime of your life.

I have an Ipod that contains some music I listened to when in my twenties.
I notice that every time I listen to those older songs, I seem to feel more
relaxed, and just better all around. It’s hard to explain, but I feel
“younger.”

Is it all in my head? Possibly, but who can say. Besides, since the brain
controls the body, you could very well say it IS all in your head,
literally!

I think your body responds to all kinds of “cues” and some of them are
in the form of sound. Music is a totally passive way to get those benefits.
Everyone enjoys listening to music, so make it a regular part of your day.
Bet you will feel the difference!

Speaking of music, one of my all time favorites is Joni Mitchell. This
Canadian born singer/songwriter/artist, has shown her mastery of pop music
across several decades. She is such an immense talent.

In her later years she had lost her previous vocal range due to smoking,
but much like Frank Sinatra, it gave a certain maturity and character to
her singing. Again, like Sinatra, she has evolved in her sound and style.

Two albums come to mind.

“Travelogue” and “Both Sides Now.”

Travelogue is a compilation of her work that has been re-done with the
backing of Vince Mendoza’s orchestra. It features Joni’s smoky voice with
lush orchestral arrangements that give her songs a more majestic and
timeless feel.

“Both Sides Now,” is Joni’s tribute to the great standards of the 30′s
and 40”s  This is very special to me because both my parents loved the
music of this era, and I find that over time, I have developed a greater
appreciation for what they shared with me.

Both Sides Now which is the title track for the album is I feel is for Joni
Mitchell what “My Way” was for Frank Sinatra. Both of them put so much
feeling into their music. They didn’t just sing songs, they shared stories
of their life!

Age Better #23 – The 4 Hour Workweek, vitamin-D3, and Victor Victoria

know this is an antiaging and wellness newsletter, but at times I like to
delve into other areas that I know are important to you, because health and
success go hand in hand. You CAN be healthy on a budget, but financial
success makes living life much easier, and certainly far less stressful.

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”  You have
probably heard this quote a number of times, but I wanted to reflect on it
a bit, because the main reason why people find success difficult is that
they can’t bring themselves to get started.

I have a name for this, that I call “foot of the mountain syndrome.”
It’s like standing at the bottom of a mountain you have to climb, looking
up at the towering mountain, and thinking about how difficult it will be to
climb.

The goal or task seems overwhelming to you and so there is procrastination,
and just a hesitancy to begin. Many people (myself included) face this
problem, and to be truly successful in any area of your life, you have to
find a way to overcome this problem.

You will find your tasks and projects much easier to cope with, when you
can get yourself to start, to take that first step, and develop some
momentum toward your goal.

If you have a large project, then break it down into small tasks that you
can handle and focus on each one until you have finished it. Then move on
to the next task. Don’t feel you have to tackle everything at once, just
start and take each part to completion.

Another problem is the feeling that you cannot do something because you are
not an “expert” or you feel you are not good enough because you compare
yourself to others, and they seem so much better than you.

This is another idea that sabotages our success. If you have the desire to
achieve something but don’t have the necessary expertise, there are many
people out there that will teach or train you in the necessary skills.

The most successful people are not necessarily the ones who are ultimate
experts, but rather they are experts on how to get themselves to start and
follow through. In many cases they outsource part of their project to
others who ARE experts.

This is how many people handle complex tasks, and move forward towards
their goals. With that said, there is a book I recommend you read that
describes this process of outsourcing.

It’s called “The Four Hour Work Week.” and it got 4.5 out of 5 stars
with over 1500 reviews!

This is one of the most interesting books I’ve ever read, and really…it’s
not about only working four hours per week, but rather making the most of
your time so that you can work less but actually achieve more.

Written by Tim Ferris (author of The Four Hour Body) it’s chock full of
ideas and resources that can help you be more efficient and productive,
whether you are a CEO, a small business owner, or an individual just
wanting to do more with less effort.

This is definitely well worth reading!

I got  pleasant surprise this week. Seems like my testosterone levels got
kicked up a notch (always a good thing!) I was at a loss to explain this,
but the most likely candidate is the new vitamin-d supplement I am taking.

It’s made by Jarrow Formulas, and you know from past newsletters that I
think highly of their supplement line as far as potency and quality.  With

Vitamin-D3  (it’s actually a hormone called Cholecalciferol, not a vitamin)
is essential for your body for the following reasons:

promotes better bone density

used to make other important hormones like testosterone

important for a healthy immune system

important in preventing diabetes

deficiency of vitamin-d raises cholesterol levels

If you are deficient, it takes weeks to get the levels up to where they
should be, but it’s critically important for your overall health and
longevity. In the summer if you are getting at least 20 minutes per day of
full body sun exposure, you likely won’t need to supplement your
vitamin-D3, because your body will bio-synthesize it from the effect of
sunlight on your skin.

In the colder months, one to two gelcaps per day with meals should be
adequate for your needs, but as always, check with your doctor first if you

One of my favorite romantic comedies is a film called “Victor
Victoria.” Years ago my mother urged me to see this film, and I basically
showed little interest but eventually got around to seeing it, and I was
blown away!

This movie gets everything right, the plot, the humor, great performances
from great actors and actresses ect. It received 7 Oscar nominations and
won best musical score!

I just want to close this newsletter by talking about the innate creative
power that we all have, and why it’s so important for us to use it. I
believe that or purpose on this Earth is to find happiness by creating the
things that give us the most joy.

When the founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence, this is
what they meant by “inalienable rights” and the freedom of expression
they wrote into the Constitution.

We all have such diverse and unique talents and potentials, and when we
develop these, society benefits in the form of new ideas, new solutions to
problems, and more wealth (financial, spiritual, cultural, ect.) that
springs from this creative force in all of us.

Whatever it is that you desire to do, whatever dreams you have, find a way
to take that step, to move forward and accomplish your goals. Remember that
when you dream, plan, and create, you are fulfilling your true destiny.

This holiday season has really been dampened by the terrible tragedy that unfolded in Connecticut. I can’t fathom somebody doing such terrible things to innocent children. The only consolation is that we will be determined find a way to prevent these things from happening in the future! My heart goes out to the families of the children and teachers.

Yet there is still so much good in the world, and there are people everywhere who act with kindness and compassion toward others. A recent phone conversation with my sister confirmed this fact.

She told me that my nephew Andrew, who is a police office was going on a trip to Virginia, and when I asked why, she told me that he and a group of officers from Massachusetts were going to visit a young boy with terminal brain cancer.

This youngster had dreamed of becoming a police officer when he grew up, and sadly he will not likely get that chance. His wish was to be visited by police officers and they are going down there to comfort and honor him.

They will make him an honorary police officer, give him a badge with his name on it, and present the family with donations they have collected. I have never been prouder of my nephew, who has matured into a caring and compassionate man.

I have a couple of suggestions for protecting yourself from colds and flu during the winter months. I use these items myself as needed. All these things are natural, safe, and I have found them very effective.

Liposomal vitamin-c:  This is vitamin-c bound to a fat molecule (hence the name liposomal) which makes it much more bio-available to your body and easily absorbed. It’s supposed to be as effective as inter-venous vitamin-c, which is pretty darn impressive.

It is currently being researched as a potential form of treatment for cancer and has shown some impressive results by enhancing immunityand detoxifying cells.

The smaller the liposomes (particles of encapsulated vitamin-c) the better absorbed they are. The “lipid” used should be phosphatidylcholine.

As safe as vitamin-c is, there are certain people who should not use vitamin-c supplements unless they get their doctor’s ok.

People with hemochromatosis which is a condition where iron builds up in their bodies People G6PD syndrome, which is an enzyme deficiency People with kidney problems or those getting dialysis treatments People on blood thinners like Coumadin or Warfarin

The second item I use mostly on infections is colloidal silver. Again this works very well because bacteria can’t become resistant to it. You can find it in most health food stores and for more info check out my web page on it.

I have used this on some intense infections and it always works quickly and completely. The only side effect I have noticed is a slight bit of constipation, which depends on the dosage and how long I use it.

With that said, I would caution that you always see a doctor for anything above a slight infection, as they can be dangerous. No product I recommend is meant to substitute for proper medical treatment. Rather they can be helpful for minor things, and also for more serious things when used in addition to standard medical treatment.

So….bottom line, if you are really sick, don’t just self medicate, always see a doctor to be on the safe side!

Ok, here comes another movie review, and if you are wondering why I talk about older films, it’s because they made a strong and positive impression on me. These types of movies engage you on an emotional level which I think is the key to a great film.

I’m not saying that there aren’t any current movies that are good, but it seems (in my hallowed opinion -:D). Hollywood is cranking out a lot of films without real substance these days, in that they don’t connect with the audience on an emotional level.

With that said, I recommend you check out “Antwon Fisher.”  The movie stars Derek Luke in the title role, Denzel Washington as the psychiatrist, and Joy Bryant as Fisher’s supportive girlfriend.

The screenplay was written by the real Antwon Fisher, and based on his book “Finding Fish.” In the film Antwon who was given up for adoption by his drug dependent mother endures physical, sexual, and verbal abuse while in foster care.

His anger problems while in the navy bring him to the attention of a caring psychiatrist played wonderfully by Denzel Washington. In the film Antwon must overcome his inner rage, and with the help of his girlfriend seeks and is reunited with his extended family.

The scene where he meets his extended family for the first time is quite an emotional moment and will have you reaching for the Kleenex once again. Fine performances all around by the actors in this film, which is also Denzel Washington’s directorial debut.

It got 4.5 stars on Amazon over 147 reviews. Definitely worth watching!

Since this newsletter IS about antiaging, I will be delving into that topic more intensely in the new year, and evaluating some products that actually DO have the ability to slow or even reverse SOME aspects of aging.

Remember that antiaging is not about being immortal or living hundreds of years, it’s really being proactive about your health, so you can enjoy your life and loved ones fully for many years to come. That’s what it’s all about, and YES it is very possible to do this!

Age Better Newsletter

Is it my imagination or are we getting hammered by more and more dire predictions
of doom than ever before? The fiscal cliff, the Mayan prophecy, peak oil, global
warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, etc. The media seems determined to convince
us that we are about to “fall off the cliff” so to speak.

Hey, I’m not saying we don’t have a lot of problems, but that the media tends to
focus on the negative, and that makes everything seem much worse. So with that
said, let me share a few tidbits of positive and uplifting news with you.

The EIA (Energy Information Administration) is projecting that the US will produce
more energy than we need through the year 2040 (the next 28 years!)

The knowledge doubling rate for science is now 18 months, which means every 18
months we as a society increase our net knowledge by 100%, and this rate is STILL
INCREASING!

In the very near future we will have solar cells that we can paint on our roofs, cars
will run on non polluting natural gas, we will be able to get a college eduction over
the Internet, and miniature robots will effectively repair our bodies from the inside.

To be sure, w have some serious problems to deal with, but every day our ability to
solve these problems gets better with the development of new technologies. I
believe our best days are still ahead of us, if we move forward with confidence not
fear!

Do you know anyone who is interested in health and loves to read? If so, you might
want to get them a copy of this book: “The Four Hour Body,” by Tim Ferris. I know it
sounds gimmicky, but in reality this is an excellent book!

I have been into nutrition and exercise for a very long time, and I can tell right off
the bat if an author knows what he or she is talking about when they write about
these topics.

Tim Ferris absolutely nails it!

The book is a big one (it could probably stop a bullet), but it’s not a book you read
from cover to cover. You will go directly to the sections that specifically interest
you and pick out what is relevant and useful to you.

There are chapters on:

losing fat

gaining muscle

improving your sex life

getting better sleep

healing injuries

getting stronger

running farther and faster

swimming better

living a longer and better life

There is also bonus material on body fat reduction, heavy metal detox, and the use
of “nootropics” which are substances that improve memory, creativity, and focus!

The book is VERY well researched with Tim Ferris becoming the guinea pig for his
own performance experiments. There are also many valuable online references
included where you can do further research into these topics.

It’s been a long time since I have seen anything this complete and well researched
for the money, and it covers so many subtopics of exercise, nutrition, and health,
that there’s bound to be something useful and interesting for every reader.

At $17.00 (new hardcover) on Amazon, you would be hard put to find a better buy
for your money than “The Four Hour Body!”

For those of you who live in cold climates, this time of year is a challenge. Although
I can’t prove it, I believe that one of the reasons why winter is cold and flu season is
that we lose vital energy due to the cold temperatures both indoor and out.

Your body burns calories and uses up energy keeping you warm in the winter, and
this takes energy away from other things like your immune system. I think this is
one of the reasons why you seem to get more colds in the winter.

I recommend that you dress VERY warmly in wintertime, even indoors, so that you
don’t lose heat and thus spare the energy your body needs for vital functions like
maintaining your immune system.

There are new lightweight thermal insulating fabrics that you can wear indoors as
well as out of doors. Keep this in mind and dress warmly wherever you are. You will
feel much better through the winter and keep colds at bay.

I do this all winter and it makes quite a difference in my energy levels, and ability to
stay healthy. I haven’t had the flu in over ten years, and of course I do not get flu
shots. You can find “thermals” online at Amazon, LL Beans, Land’s End, Eddie Bauer,
etc.

For outdoor protection in more extreme cold, do what the US military does and use
100% polypropylene. This fabric retains more body heat than any other fabric in
use! You can find it on the web by typing “military thermals” into the Google Search.

affiliation with. It’s just one of the first ones that come up in search.

I use thermals on both upper and lower body. They are also relatively cheap, and
you will find that you stay a lot more comfortable during the winter months.
Remember, that when you lose body heat you lose energy and when you lose
energy you lose your health!

Inspiration can come in many forms, from seeing someone achieve great success,
or having someone that you respect describe the difficulties they had to overcome
to be successful. My dad used to tell me the following:

“Whatever you do, make a decision. Don’t fail to act because you are afraid to be
wrong or make a mistake. Never be afraid to try!”

I think we tend to look at others who are very successful and think they must be
better than we are. Perhaps some are, but I think in many cases, the difference
between them and the average person is that they were not afraid of failure, or
making mistakes.

If there is something you want to try, just go for it. Don’t ever let the fear of failure
stop you from doing what you really want to do. You are more talented and
competent than you know!
