I recently got an email from a gentleman asking that I correct the address on the listing for his dad’s medical clinic in my antiaging doctor directory, which I did right away. I noticed that the website he referenced pertained to something called thermography.

Thus I decided to make it the topic of this weeks newsletter. It’s a very important one because it concerns the detection of breast cancer, something that’s vitally important to every woman out there.

Infrared thermography or thermography for short is an imaging technique that can detect developing breast cancer years before it actually forms a tumor in the breast. The technique uses thermal imaging to detect a concentration of blood vessels that are forming to supply nutrients to a tumor mass.

When cancerous tumors form, they need a very dense collection of blood vessels supplying them with nutrients, because tumor cells are so terribly inefficient at creating energy.

These tumor cells can’t survive on the normal blood supply that healthy tissue utilizes, so they develop whats called a “vascular network” which shows up on the thermography scan as a hot spot.

This process can be underway years before a tumor actually forms, and can give the woman a warning that something is wrong and needs to be medically addressed. This is different from a mammogram which uses x-rays to detect a solid tumor mass.

Mammograms cannot detect cancer until a tumor has already formed, giving a woman far less time to intervene medically to deal with the developing cancer. It would be irresponsible of me to suggest that thermography replaces mammograms, because they do different things. However thermography is a very valuable tool for advanced detection of breast cancer.

The two advantages of thermography are that it uses no radiation, therefore it is very safe and will not increase the risk of cancer the way mammograms can. The other advantage is that it picks up developing cancer years before it becomes a problem.

I believe that thermography needs to be available to every woman, as a tool to detect developing cancer and allow her time to prevent the development of a tumor and the spread of the cancer from the breast to other parts of the body.

It’s 51 degrees in Boston as I write this, and although I keep reading these articles about the planet warming, I remain skeptical. It’s going down to 40…yes that’s right “40 degrees” in the middle of May! I call that unseasonably cold for this time of year.

Some scientists are actually predicting a cooling cycle based on lower solar activity in the next few decades. This would be a severe problem for food production and energy usage. Hopefully this is not the case, but only time will tell.

Mother nature is teasing us with these warm days followed by these cold spells. I just wish the weather would stay warm. After the long winter, we are all tired of the cold.

I saw something on Facebook recently that really made me angry! Angelina Jolie had both her breasts removed supposedly to protect against cancer and was being applauded as courageous and a role model to women. To me this is absolute insanity!

Removing perfectly healthy breasts to prevent the possibility of breast cancer is wrong on so many levels. This will do nothing to prevent other forms of cancer, and could even increase the chances of contracting some other type of cancer as well.

This woman (Angelina Jolie) did NOT have breast cancer, and it’s sad and disturbing that doctors actually agreed to remove her breasts even though she was perfectly healthy. Now I fully acknowledge that it’s her body and she has every right to do this if she wants.

But the message this sends to women all over the world is a dangerous and false one, that they should think about removing their healthy breasts to “protect against breast cancer” when we already know what causes these cancers and how to prevent them.

It’s important for women to have all the facts about breast cancer and to know that they can do a lot to prevent it if they understand why it happens.

There is also a non-invasive, safe test that can detect possible breast cancer years before a tumor actually develops. It’s called “infrared thermograpy.” It uses infrared imaging to detect a developing mass of blood vessels that grow to feed a tumor.

I am not saying this replaces mammograms, but that thermography uses no radiation so it’s completely safe. If it shows a developing vascular mass (concentration of blood vessels), then mammograms can be used to verify if a tumor exists or not.

Ladies, DO NOT believe that radical actions like having your breasts removed are necessary to protect yourselves. We know why cancer develops and we know what steps to take to prevent it.

It’s about the story of her recovery from breast cancer, and what the best doctors out there are doing for prevention and cure. I would urge every woman to get as much information as she can before she makes decisions on how to prevent or cure this disease.

Don’t be misled and let your decisions be driven by fear and lack of knowledge. Breast cancer is both preventable and curable, IF you understand it and have the right information! Take responsibility for your own health and be informed!

I finally saw Iron Man 3 this past weekend, and it was for me totally enjoyable. I love Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark, and the hi-tech sci-fi stuff is what I really like. That said, this film didn’t engage me on an emotional level, so it was just light entertainment.

Nothing wrong with that, but if you are looking for anything deep or profound you won’t find it in films like this. For the $10.00 plus ticket price you are guaranteed lots of action, cool gadgets, and larger than life characters.

If this is your thing, you will really like Iron Man 3. Even if it’s not, I doubt you will be bored. Check it out. Marvel has a custom of having an additional scene after the film credits. I won’t spoil it and reveal what it is. You’ll just have to see the film to find out.

I love the GRP All Stars! This group of super talented musicians who record for GRP Records make some amazing music. Thank God their stuff is posted on Youtube, which gives a whole new generation of people access to their music.

Lee Ritenhour is a great guitarist in his own right, and he teams up with Dave Grusin, who has written the soundtracks for films like “The Firm” and Mulholland Falls.” He also did the theme from St. Elsewhere, a hospital drama filmed at Boston City Hospital.

Age Better #22 – Effortless Stress Management with HPP!

We are well into March, and although spring is right around the corner,
somebody forgot to tell mother nature! I can’t wait for the warmer weather,
and it’s taking it’s time getting here.

My oldest nephew Andrew is enjoying being a new father. He says that it
hasn’t completely hit him yet, but he seems to be fitting comfortably into
this new role, and really excited about his new son “Tyler James!”

Two new babies were added to the family this winter and will be
experiencing their first Easter Sunday. Easter comes early this year, and
I’m hoping that the weather is at least somewhat mild so that we can enjoy
the holiday.

They are still way too young for their first “Easter egg hunt,” but I
am a bit excited for them as Easter was so very special for me, and I
believe will be for them when they are a bit older.

They say stress is a killer…which is literally true, but nobody ever
explains why. Until you understand what it’s really about, you can’t
effectively control it, much less eliminate it.

So here’s my “two cents” on stress…

Your autonomic nervous system is divided into two branches, the
“sympathetic” branch which essentially gets you ready to deal with
crisis and emergencies by preparing you for “fight or flight.” This is
really useful in life threatening situation, but not otherwise.

The other branch is called the “parasympathetic.” It deals with
digestion, elimination, and restoring your energy. It’s engaged while you
are at rest and there is no danger or crisis to react to.

The sympathetic nervous system evolved when early humans were subject to
constant danger in their environment from attacks by wild animals. In
modern life we are not subject to the same danger, but react as if we were.

We respond to emotional stress that triggers the same reactions from our
sympathetic nervous system. Our body reacts by producing cortisol which is
a stress hormone, and  also raises blood sugar to provide energy for
whatever our emergency requires.

When we are stressed we spend way too much time in “sympathetic” mode,
and this lays the foundation for chronic illness. Since our body’s response
to stress is hard wired by evolution, we need to change how we perceive and
react to various situations.

I’ve always believed the best way to solve problems is the way that
requires the least effort, because you are more likely to follow through
and do it. You have heard about relaxation tapes, and so now I will share
with you what I think are the best ones.

I have used these products for over 20 years. They are top quality and they

While on the subject of how to relax, I want to share with you one of my
favorite musical artists. Her name is Basia, and she is a Polish lady who
sings in a style that’s best described as Brazilian Jazz!

She has such a beautiful voice and unique style. She is an example of a
real international pop star!

She was in her heyday in the 1980′s and kind of faded from sight. I think
she became a mother a that time and was focused on that role, but
resurfaced in 2011. She is currently working on a new CD, and presumably
after that she will resume touring.

There’s always hope for a better tomorrow! That’s something I sometimes
forget myself, and daily experiences remind me of.  I remember something
that happened years ago in regards to the mother of a good friend.

My friend Tom’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and got
progressively worse until the point where they had to carry her from room
to room, as she was permanently in a fetal position.

She did not remember anything, nor recognize anyone. I felt bad for Tom as
he had just recently lost his father and now his mom was so seriously ill.
Then one day I was at the gym and noticed this older woman at the counter.

She was just leaving and got into her car and drove away. Since I did not
recognize her, I asked Tom who she was. He replied that it was his mom, and
then proceeded to tell me how this apparent miracle occurred.

She had taken a turn for the worse and was rushed to the hospital where
when examined one of the doctors suspected that she did not have
Alzheimer’s, but rather another medical condition which could be treated
successfully.

The necessary treatment was given and she actually recovered completely!
She was now able to recognize her family, remember things, and actually was
able to resume driving her car! This to me is proof positive that miracles
do happen.

So NEVER give up. You never know when fate can turn in your favor and
things will work out for you. In many ways we create our own reality. Stay
positive and focus on the joy in life!

Prevent Holiday Weight Gain and Still Enjoy Yourself…

Hello,

Here is my promised issue about avoiding the weight gaining
(although tasty) traps of holiday eating.

First though I’d like to reflect on something that happened to me during
my day and caused me to stop and reflect on something of importance.

I was very busy working on the PC, and one of my two beloved cats
“Tosca” a small brown tabby tried to jump on my lap. I quickly shooed her
away, and she just sat on the floor dejectedly looking at me with those big
sad eyes.

I looked at her and thought to myself” what am I doing that is so important
that I reject the love this little animal is trying to give me?” She is SO worth
my time and attention and so I put aside what I was doing to devote some
time to her.

As I beckoned to her, she was hesitant, but then she proceeded to jump
onto my lap. This was followed by much purring and adoration from her
little eyes, and I spent the next 15 minutes or so giving her the attention
she craved.  

She was a shelter cat, and I drove 8 hours each way to rescue her from
being “put down” as they call it. She shows her gratitude every day and I
am thankful to have her and my other cat “Tyler” (also a shelter cat) in my
life. They give so much, and ask so little in return.

My point is that life is both fragile and fleeting. We see it in the disasters
like Hurricane Sandy that claim so many lives, and hear about the
tragedies that seem to dominate the news these days.  Heading into the
holiday season we should remember this and be thankful for the people
(and pets) in our lives.

Take every opportunity to spend that quality time with those you love, be
they human or animal. Life is way too short to miss out on that time spent
with those we care about.

Ok, now about that holiday eating, there are a few rules that will help you
IF you follow them.

Here they are:

Avoid eating sugary deserts after fatty meals. This drives your insulin
levels through the roof and  will cause you to store calories in the form of
fat. It also contributes to heart disease by driving up inflammation.

Drink plenty of water before your meals, and you will find that it takes less
food to satisfy you.

Eat plenty of protein with your meals. Your digestive system has to work
harder to break down protein, so you will burn up to 30% of the calories in
that food just digesting it.

Protein also reduces the glycemic index (the rate at which sugar enters
your blood stream), thus preventing the rapid rise in insulin which causes
you to store fat.

There ARE a couple of supplements that you CAN use to avoid gaining
fat from the sugar in your meals, however please understand that these
are NOT a substitute for proper eating. They will help, but not if you go
overboard with sugary foods and don’t exercise.

One is called “hydroxycitric acid” and it is taken about 20 minutes prior to
a meal that has lots of simple carbs (sugar).  You can find out more about

Green coffee extract can be used on a regular basis. It is entirely natural
and quite safe!

during the holidays, and I would have to say it’s due to combining foods
properly, and avoiding problem combinations like fat with sugar.
