The Boston Red Sox have won the World Series! I guess that’s about the most popular news story in these parts.  My father was a huge Red Sox fan and I only wish he could be here to savor this victory by his beloved baseball team!

Part of the reason they won the World Series is that they kept injuries to a minimum and went in to the post season will a physically intact team. Speaking of physically intact, I could use a lesson in remaining so.

I don’t quite know what I did, but it appears to have been a deep strain of the abdominal muscles due to doing an exercise I have not done in ages. Naturally I went too heavy on it and paid the price.

I have yet to figure out if it’s just a bad pull or worse, like a breach of the abdominal wall. In any case, it precludes any direct work to that area as I let it heal. With this news in mind, I would make a case for easing into ANY exercise program.

As I have mentioned many times, the real value of exercise is in the quality of the exercise NOT the quantity. It’s easy to overdo things, and the result is never positive when you do that, as evidenced by my latest injury issue.

Don’t get me wrong, exercise is one of the most important components in staying healthy, but understand that there is good exercise and not so good exercise. Always start very conservatively and don’t push too fast too soon.

Professional athletes and movies stars often embark on rigorous exercise routines because they have a limited amount of time to get into shape and millions of dollars are invested in what they are doing.

We however, being ordinary people are not forced by circumstance to rush this process and so should go slow and easy. If you are middle aged and don’t have a history of intense exercise, you should get checked out by a doctor prior to starting an exercise program.

Stress tests can indicate cardiac abnormalities that might give you a problem, and so it’s better to be safe than sorry. Even people with heart conditions can and should exercise, BUT they should also start very conservatively and build up their duration and intensity slowly.

Your beginning routine might be so easy that you doubt it’s helping you at all, but in truth you are being smart and setting the stage for future improvements. Even simple stretches to start and end your day might be all you need for a beginning routine until you feel that you want to bring things up a notch. At that point you can begin to build on a solid foundation.

For those of you who may be fibromyalgia sufferers or know someone who is, you might like to know that there are several products that can be of help. These products do not address the root cause of Fibro, BUT they can potentially offer some relief from the symptoms.

The first is called “methylfolate” and is a form of folic acid that can be absorbed and utilized by people with the MTHFR gene defect. Since 55% of the North American population carries that gene, lots of people out there cannot properly absorb folic acid.

Without the ability to properly absorb folic acid, the toxic amino acid homocysteine can build up in the blood causing increased inflammation which exacerbates Fibromyalgia. Using methylfolate can help lower homocystiene levels and thus help Fibro, not to mention lowering your risk of heart disease as well!

If you try this nutritional supplement, please let me know how it works for you. Dosage requirements would vary from person to person, but the rule of thumb I go by is to start with the smallest dose, and see how that works for you.

Start with one capsule (400 mcg) and you can take this 3-4 times per week or every other day. If you have the MTHFR gene defect, you should notice a feeling of calmness and well being.

You can tell if you have this defect by eating asparagus and noticing of yoiur urine has a strong odor afterward. If the odor is present, this is an indication that you have this gene defect, and would benefit by taking methyl donors like methylfolate, SAM-E, or trimethylglicine.

The other two items I will mention are magnesium, and malic acid. It’s quite possible that you could combine the two in the form of magnesium malate, and although I have never used this form of magnesium it would be logical that it might be effective.

I am half Armenian, well actually since I was adopted it’s more accurate to say that my father was of Armenian extraction, and I find that after his passing, I have an interest in learning more about the language and culture. It makes me feel closer to my father.

There is an instrument, a very ancient instrument from Armenia called the “Duduk.” It’s a wind instrument played with a reed that is appearing more often in Hollywood and other venues due to it’s mystical and enchanting sound.

The Armenians make this instrument from apricot wood and the legend is that this wood originally grew in the Garden of Eden which some scholars say was adjacent to Ancient Armenia, in the valley of the Zagros mountains in what is now Iran.

The Duduk has been described by some as sounding almost like a human voice and is not played all over the world by musicians, many of whom are not Armenian but were drawn to the instrument because of it’s soulful sound.

Being a huge Star Trek fan, this clip is a favorite of mine. In it, the character of Spock explains to fellow Vulcan Lt. Valeris, that there is much more to wisdom than just logic. It is interesting because it is an example of the way the character of Spock evolved in the films and learns to come to terms with his human half.

He learns that his Vulcan logic needs to be complimented by his human feelings and perspective. He understand the shortcomings of denying his true self and knows that he cannot achieve wisdom without fully embracing who and what he is.

For some reason the aftermath of Labor Day seems to be a time when we get back to work (metaphorically speaking) after the lazy days of summer. Yeah I know, most of us work year round, but there is a sense of “getting back to normal” that characterizes the end of summer.

With that said, I have vowed to resurrect two of my blogs which were decimated by Google’s Panda and Penguin algorithms. My cholesterol blog will need a major re-write because new information about cholesterol and heart disease needs to be incorporated into the blog.

The simplistic “cholesterol causes heart disease” story just does not wash anymore and thus I have to change things to reflect this new knowledge. To be honest, the topic of human lipid biochemistry is very complex and beyond my understanding on a deep level.

I am going to try and boil it down to it’s essence and present simple strategies to cut the risk of heart disease across the board. This will involve a lot of research and rethinking what I thought I knew, but of course it is well worth it.

I always want to give people the read my articles the best most up to date information I can. I can however give you a few simple rules of thumb that will always be valid and effective, even as new information about cholesterol makes it’s way to the public.

These five things will reduce your risk of heart disease:

Limit sugar intake: (this includes simple sugars, alcoholic beverages, AND processed carbohydrates from grains)

Do not cook with or otherwise consume poly unsaturated oils like canola, corn, ect. The only oils safe for cooking are olive oil (for low heat) and coconut oil (for high heat)

Get some kind of regular exercise at least three times per week. This can be “power walking”, pushups or situps, circuit resistance training ect. This is because building and maintain lean muscle mass helps blood sugar control which protects against heart disease.

Try making your diet more alkaline by including more vegetables, a little bit of fruit, and plenty of clean pure water.

Doing these five things will go a long way toward protect you from heart disease, because they address all the underlying causes. Notice that I didn’t suggest avoiding foods that are high in cholesterol.

That’s because cholesterol does not “cause” heart disease, and the amount of cholesterol in your diet is really not an important factor in heart health. Besides, cholesterol is a vital substance that your body cannot do without.

Too low a cholesterol level leaves you vulnerable to heart disease, cancer, strokes, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s Disease to mention a few!

So the bottom line is, don’t restrict cholesterol, DO eat healthy foods, reduce stress, and lower your blood sugar and you will be doing 80% of the things that are needed to prevent heart disease!

I just watched the new Tom Cruise sci-fi film called “Oblivion” and don’t quite know why it didn’t do that well at the box office. While I thought the plot had more than it’s share of twists and was a bit convoluted, it was (to me) an enjoyable film and delivered in the action and “coolness” department.

I admit that I love sci-fi, and so found it enjoyable. If there was one thing that I could fault in this film it was that you never quite find yourself emotionally invested in the characters and storyline.

Contrast that with “Avatar” which for me WAS an emotionally engaging story! In any case, I think you will find “Oblivion” enjoyable to watch if not compelling. I think this is the look and feel of sci-fi films to come.

However what I am really looking forward to is the network TV series “Agents of Shield,” as the characters and concept are familiar to me because I read Marvel Comics as a kid!

The first episode is September 24th and I will be critiquing it at that time. Bear McCreary the man behind Battlestar Gallactica’s soundtrack will be doing the music for the show which is exciting. Well have to wait and see how it all turns out…

This week’s clip is called “Diaspora Oratorio” from the popular TV series “Battlestar Gallactica.” Hauntingly sad and foreboding it is none the less beautiful and captivating. It captures the essence of the show which tells the story of the “diaspora” of humanity in escaping from a genocide at the hands of the artificial lifeforms they created.

Bear McCreary in writing the sountrack for the show featured an instrument called the “Duduk” which is a 3000 year old Armenian wind instrument constructed of apricot wood, which according to legend grew in the Garden of Eden.

As you know I am a sci-fi fan, but truthfully the show was during it’s run one of the most acclaimed dramatic series on television, and one of the few things I watched on a regular basis.

Age Better #24 – Beating Cancer With Nutrition, Pandora, and Enjoying Joni Mitchell

This newsletter is late as I was on the road for the past few days. Yes, I
could write it from my hotel room, but really would rather be at home and
not rushed when I write so, here it is, better late than never.

I got a call from an old friend of my Dad’s who informed me that his wife
has ovarian cancer. I am not sure why he called to tell me, but I get the
feeling he was kind of asking for help, or at least some good advice.

I fought the temptation to inundate him with information and just gave him
some simple strategies to help her feel better. As time goes on, I will
share with him some of what I am writing about today.

Cancer is on the rise in our current times due to toxins in our
environment, and lack of nutrition in our diets. Cancer is a sign of bad
cellular metabolism, so to prevent it, we need to promote healthy cell
energy. Sounds simple, and for the most part…it is.

What are the steps to prevent this disease?

Keep insulin LOW! I can’t say this enough. Insulin is to cancer what
gasoline is to fire. Got it? If you have elevated insulin because you are
eating too much sugar/simple carbs, you run a greater risk of cancer.

Insulin is tremendously inflammatory, and also causes accelerated cell
division. Two things you DON’T want if you want to avoid the “BIG-C.”
If you already have cancer, sugar will feed it. So you MUST keep sugar in
your diet as low as possible.

Keep cell energy high by using what Dr. Stephen Sinatra calls “the

Ever heard of Pandora? No…not the mythical jungle planet from the movie
Avatar. I’m talking about the music site where you can get channels based
upon the music that you like.

This is called “The Music Genome Project.”

It’s free, and you can listen to some wonderful music. I have channels for
choral music, movies soundtracks, pop, new age, ect.  Music which is of
course made up of sounds has beneficial effects on your brain and possibly
even your DNA.

Russian scientists recently found that the “DNA” that western
scientists call “junk DNA” because it seemingly had no purpose can
actually be “programmed!” This is positively amazing, and suggests to
me that we have far more control over our destiny than we previously
imagined.

I believe that music can help “reprogram” our DNA so to speak and lead
to greater health and well being. All we need to do is listen…

Music is a form of coherent sound energy. It is organized rather than
chaotic, and thus has positive effects on your body and mind. I would
suggest that you listen to both popular and classical, and include music
from when you were in the prime of your life.

I have an Ipod that contains some music I listened to when in my twenties.
I notice that every time I listen to those older songs, I seem to feel more
relaxed, and just better all around. It’s hard to explain, but I feel
“younger.”

Is it all in my head? Possibly, but who can say. Besides, since the brain
controls the body, you could very well say it IS all in your head,
literally!

I think your body responds to all kinds of “cues” and some of them are
in the form of sound. Music is a totally passive way to get those benefits.
Everyone enjoys listening to music, so make it a regular part of your day.
Bet you will feel the difference!

Speaking of music, one of my all time favorites is Joni Mitchell. This
Canadian born singer/songwriter/artist, has shown her mastery of pop music
across several decades. She is such an immense talent.

In her later years she had lost her previous vocal range due to smoking,
but much like Frank Sinatra, it gave a certain maturity and character to
her singing. Again, like Sinatra, she has evolved in her sound and style.

Two albums come to mind.

“Travelogue” and “Both Sides Now.”

Travelogue is a compilation of her work that has been re-done with the
backing of Vince Mendoza’s orchestra. It features Joni’s smoky voice with
lush orchestral arrangements that give her songs a more majestic and
timeless feel.

“Both Sides Now,” is Joni’s tribute to the great standards of the 30′s
and 40”s  This is very special to me because both my parents loved the
music of this era, and I find that over time, I have developed a greater
appreciation for what they shared with me.

Both Sides Now which is the title track for the album is I feel is for Joni
Mitchell what “My Way” was for Frank Sinatra. Both of them put so much
feeling into their music. They didn’t just sing songs, they shared stories
of their life!

Right now we seem to be experiencing a mid winter thaw here Is Boston. I
know it won't last, but I'll take it anyway. It feels good not to have the
normal winter chill in the air, and It's better sleeping weather as well.

Speaking of sleep, one thing that can keep you awake as you get older is
prostate issues.

The prostate tends to get larger as we get older. When that happens it
interrupts normal bladder function and that can have a negative effect on
the quality of sleep you get. 

What's interesting is that the same thing that helps the prostate also helps
fight baldness. It's called “saw palmetto extract.” It's not expensive at all, 
but you need to get the genuine article when buying saw palmetto.

What it does is to prevent testosterone in your body from converting to DHT
which can aggravate the prostate and also cause male pattern baldness. This
supplement comes in small dark brown oval shaped gel caps.

It's always in 160 mg per gel cap strength (that's how you know you have
the real thing). You need 1-3 gel caps taken a couple of times per day with
meals. You will need to experiment with the dose to find what works best
for you.

What you should notice is the appearance of your hair improves and seems
thicker and more dense. As for prostate issues, it would be not having to
get up at night to go to the bathroom. That would tell you that it's

issues. If you are on medication, I am NOT telling you to take saw palmetto

BUT...I can tell you that Proscar which is the prescription medicine for
prostate enlargement works by inhibiting DHT, and that saw palmetto will do
the same thing minus the side effects of the drug.

I just wanted to say a word about purpose and motivation. It's easy to get
so wrapped up in day to day survival, that we are “living for the
weekend,” so to speak.  I like to kick back and relax too, but sometimes
find myself getting “too comfortable.”

Happiness comes when we move forward toward our goals and can tell that we
are making progress. Whether it's learning a new skill, solving a
longstanding problem, or having a totally new experience that gets you
really excited about life again.

Don't fall into the trap of just coasting through life. Find something that
gets you motivated to do more, to be more, and you will be on the path to
being fulfilled. It occurred to me that as human beings we are moved into
action by inspiration.

If we thought everything through to the last excruciating detail we would
likely never have the passion to move ahead, but we are set into motion by
ideas, by inspiration, and by the thoughts of what we could achieve if only
we commit to our goal. 

I haven't forgotten that this is an “anti-aging” newsletter, but think
about it, in order to hold the aging process at bay, we have to think
young, and strive to “stay in the game.”

If you wonder why I review older movies, it's because the newer ones seem
to be lacking in substance. Seems like Hollywood is just pumping them out
to make money, and so many films are lacking in that quality that makes you
feel compelled to watch them.

Now that doesn't mean they can't be light entertainment IF it's done well!
With that, comes my latest recommendation for a more recent film in the
action adventure (superhero) genre. Yep...I'm talking about “The
Avengers.”

Josh Whedon has really pulled it off, combining Marvel's characters into
one huge feature film. If you love sci-fi and action, this is your film. It
is not darkly violent and disturbing like the Batman films.

If you love the superhero genre it will absolutely satisfy you. Great
performances from an ensemble cast, as Josh Whedon manages to develop each
character and mesh them into a team for this film.

I especially loved how Scarlett Johansen as Black Widow tricked Loki into
giving her the information she was after. Just when Loki thinks he that
because she is a woman, he has broken her down and intimidated her, she
completely fakes him out. That was brilliant!

If you grew up reading Marvel comics like I did, or just love action
adventure and sci-fi stuff, then rent “The Avengers,” you will
thoroughly enjoy it!
