With all the news coverage of the US government “shutdown” you would think the sky is falling. In truth about 85% of the US Federal government is still operating normally. I think we would do well to remember that private citizens are what keep everything going, and that government should serve our needs, not the other way around.

We still have to get up and go to work in the morning, pay our bills, take care of our families, and all the other things that life involves on a daily basis. So it goes with health as well. We are the stewards of our own health, and if we do not take care of ourselves, no “healthcare plan” whether private or government run will matter.

Our health is in OUR hands. Always remember that, and you will go a long way towards making sure that you have the health to enjoy your life fully and for a long time! One of the most important aspects of health is how your colon (also called the gut) functions.

Since certain neurotransmitters are actually made in your intestinal tract, “gut health” can affect your emotions, and thinking as well as how you physically feel. So as you can see it’s vitally important to have it functioning optimally!

Health of your stomach and colon is the key to overall health for several reasons. You need to absorb and assimilate your food for the nutrients your body needs. If your GI tract isn’t healthy, you can get needed nutrients from your foods.

The longer the “transit time” it takes for waste to exit the colon, the longer you are exposed to toxins that can create cancerous conditions in the body. Think about it, you wouldn’t keep your garbage in your kitchen for months, you would throw it out as soon as possible, because keeping it around is unsanitary.

The same can be said for eliminating waste from your body. It needs to happen every day, and be as complete as possible. An adequate amount of both soluble and insoluble fiber is essential to this process.

An example of insoluble fiber is Psyllium seed husks. These absorb water and provide a “bulking” effect to waste in the colon.

An example of soluble fiber is fruit like apples which also assist in elimination though stimulation of peristalsis (the process of moving the bowels). By the way, the bowels should be moved at least once per day if not more.

I have heard doctors tell their patients that this is not important. In the case of one gentleman I know, his doctor told him that a bowel movement every few days was “normal” for him. This is incredibly bad medical advice.

I have had good luck with just plain Psyllium husks in water, but of course your experience may be different. Whole grains like oat groats, quinoa, or ground flaxseeds can help provide the fiber that’s beneficial to the colon.

Another factor that’s important is the bacteria that is found in the colon. If it’s the normal beneficial bacteria then you will have normal bowel function, and neither be constipated or suffer from diarrhea.

You can get this beneficial bacteria either from probiotic supplements or dairy products like yogurt or kefir. Commercial yogurts and kefirs lose much of their benefit from pasteurization.  While I think the dangers of unpasteurized products are overblown, I can’t advise you to consume them for reasons of liability.

It’s safest to use a probiotic supplement or fermented dairy products as your probiotic source. Those of you who get my newsletter know that I am an advocate of the blood type diet.

When you buy these fermented dairy products, look for ones that advertise that they contain “live cultures.” This indicates they will have sufficient bacteria to be of help to you. Avoid products that contain a lot of sugar, or artificial sweeteners for obvious reasons.

Look for a live-cultured plain yogurt, preferably made from goat milk or a pasture raised cow’s milk. For kefir, the same rules follow. Plain and unsweetened is best, and you can add some berries for natural sweetening to the yogurt or kefir.

Probiotic bacteria is specific to blood type and in the near future I will be delving int that with some specific recommendations. Let’s suffice it to say that for all intents and purposes, the right probiotic foods and supplements for your blood type will result in a normally functioning colon and regular bowel movements.

So if what you are doing results in normal function, then you pretty much have it right!

The Boston Red Sox have won the World Series! I guess that’s about the most popular news story in these parts.  My father was a huge Red Sox fan and I only wish he could be here to savor this victory by his beloved baseball team!

Part of the reason they won the World Series is that they kept injuries to a minimum and went in to the post season will a physically intact team. Speaking of physically intact, I could use a lesson in remaining so.

I don’t quite know what I did, but it appears to have been a deep strain of the abdominal muscles due to doing an exercise I have not done in ages. Naturally I went too heavy on it and paid the price.

I have yet to figure out if it’s just a bad pull or worse, like a breach of the abdominal wall. In any case, it precludes any direct work to that area as I let it heal. With this news in mind, I would make a case for easing into ANY exercise program.

As I have mentioned many times, the real value of exercise is in the quality of the exercise NOT the quantity. It’s easy to overdo things, and the result is never positive when you do that, as evidenced by my latest injury issue.

Don’t get me wrong, exercise is one of the most important components in staying healthy, but understand that there is good exercise and not so good exercise. Always start very conservatively and don’t push too fast too soon.

Professional athletes and movies stars often embark on rigorous exercise routines because they have a limited amount of time to get into shape and millions of dollars are invested in what they are doing.

We however, being ordinary people are not forced by circumstance to rush this process and so should go slow and easy. If you are middle aged and don’t have a history of intense exercise, you should get checked out by a doctor prior to starting an exercise program.

Stress tests can indicate cardiac abnormalities that might give you a problem, and so it’s better to be safe than sorry. Even people with heart conditions can and should exercise, BUT they should also start very conservatively and build up their duration and intensity slowly.

Your beginning routine might be so easy that you doubt it’s helping you at all, but in truth you are being smart and setting the stage for future improvements. Even simple stretches to start and end your day might be all you need for a beginning routine until you feel that you want to bring things up a notch. At that point you can begin to build on a solid foundation.

For those of you who may be fibromyalgia sufferers or know someone who is, you might like to know that there are several products that can be of help. These products do not address the root cause of Fibro, BUT they can potentially offer some relief from the symptoms.

The first is called “methylfolate” and is a form of folic acid that can be absorbed and utilized by people with the MTHFR gene defect. Since 55% of the North American population carries that gene, lots of people out there cannot properly absorb folic acid.

Without the ability to properly absorb folic acid, the toxic amino acid homocysteine can build up in the blood causing increased inflammation which exacerbates Fibromyalgia. Using methylfolate can help lower homocystiene levels and thus help Fibro, not to mention lowering your risk of heart disease as well!

If you try this nutritional supplement, please let me know how it works for you. Dosage requirements would vary from person to person, but the rule of thumb I go by is to start with the smallest dose, and see how that works for you.

Start with one capsule (400 mcg) and you can take this 3-4 times per week or every other day. If you have the MTHFR gene defect, you should notice a feeling of calmness and well being.

You can tell if you have this defect by eating asparagus and noticing of yoiur urine has a strong odor afterward. If the odor is present, this is an indication that you have this gene defect, and would benefit by taking methyl donors like methylfolate, SAM-E, or trimethylglicine.

The other two items I will mention are magnesium, and malic acid. It’s quite possible that you could combine the two in the form of magnesium malate, and although I have never used this form of magnesium it would be logical that it might be effective.

I am half Armenian, well actually since I was adopted it’s more accurate to say that my father was of Armenian extraction, and I find that after his passing, I have an interest in learning more about the language and culture. It makes me feel closer to my father.

There is an instrument, a very ancient instrument from Armenia called the “Duduk.” It’s a wind instrument played with a reed that is appearing more often in Hollywood and other venues due to it’s mystical and enchanting sound.

The Armenians make this instrument from apricot wood and the legend is that this wood originally grew in the Garden of Eden which some scholars say was adjacent to Ancient Armenia, in the valley of the Zagros mountains in what is now Iran.

The Duduk has been described by some as sounding almost like a human voice and is not played all over the world by musicians, many of whom are not Armenian but were drawn to the instrument because of it’s soulful sound.

Being a huge Star Trek fan, this clip is a favorite of mine. In it, the character of Spock explains to fellow Vulcan Lt. Valeris, that there is much more to wisdom than just logic. It is interesting because it is an example of the way the character of Spock evolved in the films and learns to come to terms with his human half.

He learns that his Vulcan logic needs to be complimented by his human feelings and perspective. He understand the shortcomings of denying his true self and knows that he cannot achieve wisdom without fully embracing who and what he is.

Where did our summer go? Seems like we are in the fall already! While I won’t complain about the mild weather, I remember that years ago it stayed hot through the first couple of weeks in September. We called it “Indian Summer, but it seems we don’t get that anymore.

I spent the weekend helping my young cousin Remy Anne move into her new student apartment in Boston. She will be taking courses at Northeastern University (my Alma Mater). Time passes very quickly these days. It seems like only yesterday when she arrived in Boston with her folks for the first time, ready to begin studying dance at Boston Ballet!

Now I get prime seats along with her parents to watch her perform on the stage, which is

After one of her performances at the Boston Ballet, I noticed my cousin Remy had this long plastic cylinder under her arm. When I asked her what it was, she told me it was a “foam roller.”

I know what they are, in fact I have one myself, but her’s was hollow unlike my own. I hadn’t seen the newer ones so it kinda threw me off a bit. Anyway…seeing her reminded me that I needed to use mine more often. Foam rollers are cylinders made of hard plastic foam that you literately roll over to loosen tight muscles.

For those of you who cannot afford frequent massage therapy treatments,  foam roller can be just the thing to keep you more flexible and supple. You can get them online and they are relatively cheap.

I would recommend them highly as one of the most cost effective therapies available to the average person. The link below is to the model that I bought, and one I found works really well for me.

Nothing special about this one, pretty plain, but as I say relatively inexpensive for the benefits you can get from it. You don’t have to purchase any particular model, just so long as it is hard foam.

There are newer designs with knobs and protrusions on the surface. I can’t say whether these are better, because I have never used them, but they might be worth a shot. The idea is to put pressure on the tender areas because those are where the adhesions in the muscle are.

Adhesions are the result of scar tissue from what we call “micro traumas.” These are little tears in the muscle that when they heal, they often adhere to what’s called the “fascia.” Fascia is the protective sleeve or sheath around your muscles.

The muscles need to move smoothly beneath the fascia, and if they don’t because if these adhesions, then you get pain and restriction of movement. The foam roller tends to break up this scar tissue and free the adhesions, thus making you more supple.

You just basically get on the floor with the muscle you want to work resting on the foam roller. You roll over the roller until you find a spot that really hurts when you roll over it. At that point you just keep rolling back and forth across that sore spot until the pain subsides. When the pain subsides, that would be an indication that the adhesion has been freed.

Please keep in mind that this is NOT a substitute for proper medical care! If you have acute (really sharp) pain in an area that does not go away, your safest bet is to see a doctor, such as an orthopedic practitioner. They can either confirm or rule out anything serious.

The foam roller is really for long term stiffness or tenderness in an area that is the result of accumulated micro trauma from sports or exercise that happens over time. As far as learning HOW to use the foam roller, go to Youtube and search on foam roller, or foam roller exercise and you can choose any one of a number of instructional video clips.

Use of a foam roller is one of THE BEST things you can do to feel more flexible, supple, and lose that constant tightness that you may be feeling as a result of age, exercise, or trauma!

Is it me or is our government becoming more and more corrupt? Every day we turn on the news there seems to be another scandal, and more government officials claiming they know nothing about it, and refusing to be held accountable for what they do.

At the same time ordinary citizens know that certain things that are wrong and if we do them, we are held responsible for it and will be punished. We should demand the same kind of accountability from our political leadership, no matter what their party affiliation.

Sadly, there isn’t much we can do to alter this behavior when “leaders” choose not to lead by example. So each of us must step up and be the change that we want in our society. This starts with a commitment to honest and ethical behavior in everything we do.

I still believe that honesty is the best policy, and that the level of personal responsibility and integrity we have is the best path to a happy and successful life. We can’t change the world if we are unwilling to change ourselves.

The good news is that when we do the right things in the right way, we create a path for ourselves and those we love that leads to success and happiness. It’s kind of a universal truth and has always been this way.

We can create the reality we choose, and “creating” is what life is really about. There is a quote that says “It’s better to light a candle than curse the darkness.” What this means is that only by doing good ourselves can we change what’s bad.

We can’t change everything outside of our own lives, but we don’t have to. The positive changes we make in ourselves have a ripple effect that goes far beyond our personal lives. This is how we change things for the better…starting with ourselves!

Alkalize your body to help prevent cancer!

I wanted to mention a few things about acid/alkaline balance in the body and why it’s critically important to your health. Our bodies are supposed to be somewhat alkaline on the PH scale, and I think the optimal numbers are between approximately 7.3 and 7.5

PH stands for “potential of hydrogen” which affects energy production (ATP) and the entire “electromagnetic balance” of the body. Simply stated, when we are acidic, the blood carries less oxygen and our cells are not able to make as much energy.

This sets the stage for all kinds of problems from congestive heart failure to cancer. All of these are really disturbances in cell energy levels. ATP levels drop and cell voltage also goes down.

The simple equation:

higher cell voltage=good health

lowered cell voltage=poor health

What to do?

The advice to get more fruits and vegetables into your diet is a good one, and what this actually does is to “alkalize” your body. Being more alkaline means more oxygen in your blood, more energy made in your cells, and all around better health.

This is really about maintaining an electromagnetic balance in your body, reducing oxidative stress, and elevating cell energy. All of this increases your health, vitality, and sense of well being. It also lowers your risk of inflammation and chronic disease.

Here’s three things you can do to keep yourself more alkaline:

Eat more fruits and vegetables. You can do this in the form of juicing, OR using something like the “Nutribullet” which I will be reviewing in the near future. Fruit and vegetable juices have an alkalizing effect on the body.

Using a water additive like “Willard’s Water” that will increase the ph of any water you add it to. It’s a great antioxidant that actually allows you to better absorb the water you drink, and the nutrients in your food.

Ground yourself as much as you can during the day and when you sleep. Whenever you can, put your bare feet on grass or unpainted concrete. During the evening or in the winter, use a grounding pad that plugs into the ground hole on your electrical sockets.

You will absorb negative ions from the Earth which will actually thin your blood and reduce inflammation and stress. Grounding has a calming effect on your nervous system that you can really feel.

These simple strategies are things you can fit into your daily life without any real inconvenience and they will go a long way toward making you healthier. Any doctor who is knowledgeable about health will tell you that inflammation is the cause of chronic disease.

Whenever you can reduce inflammation but making your body less acidic, that’s a step in the right direction. This is especially important for diabetics, as the above strategies will lower blood sugar!

There are a number of movies coming out in this summer season that I have put on my list to see. Iron Man 3 was a blast, and being a Trekker from way back, I am planning to see the latest Star Trek film “Into Darkness.”

This is an exciting time if you are a fan of the Marvel Universe. I just heard there will be a SHIELD TV series starting this fall with Clark Gregg reprising his role as Agent Phil Coulsen.

Agent Coulsen died in “The Avengers” movie, but as you know in the world of science fiction, dead isn’t really dead, it’s just that weird state that a character is in before the scriptwriters figure a way to bring him back.

The fan outcry to bring back Agent Coulsen was so great that Marvel decided to resurrect this great character, much to my delight.

I stumbled upon a really cool music video today! It was by a Filipino singer named Christian Bautista. What really impressed me was the wonderful romantic innocence of this video, where he meets a woman and begins to fall in love with her.

I had never heard of Christan Bautista guy before, (I guess I need to get our more) but he has a great voice, and is apparently a big pop star in Asia. I can see why! The song is called “Love Moves in Mysterious Ways.”

Age Better #29: The Dangers of WiFi

It seems like “mother nature” finally figured out that it was time for
some genuine spring weather. Just a couple of days ago I was out at night
and could see my breath in the 50 degree temperatures we had.

Now it actually feels like spring and I’m looking forward to much more of
it. It’s been a long winter…

Wednesday evening I attended the Boston Ballet production called “Next
Generation” to watch my cousin Remy grace the stage at the Boston Opera
House. It was a very wonderful performance by Remy and the Boston Ballet
Company and the best way I could have imagined to spend my 58th birthday!

The ballet world is an interesting one and the men and women that perform
in it are really “artist athletes,” who are on an elite level physically. As my
cousin Remy advances into the professional phase of her dancing career,
she will benefit from some of the very same nutrition and exercise concepts
that I have shared with you!

Things like bioenergetic nutrients, grounding, micro-current, and interval
training, are all things that you can use to optimize your health at any
age! The more we know and apply, the better off we are, and we are
literally learning more each and every day!

I recently stumbled on to a Youtube video by Dr. Stephen Sinatra about cell
phone signals being an increased heart disease risk. This really piqued my
interest because I have a feeling that this will become a big health issue
in the next few years.

If you have been reading my newsletter you will have seen me mention how
important electrical signaling is to your body and it’s functions. When
electrical signals from our environment interact with our bodies, bad
things can be the result.

Once again the action of the cell membrane is the key. It is designed to
let nutrients in and toxins out, and also to keep toxins from entering the
cell. WiFi signals cause the cell membrane to close the cell off and not
allow nutrients to go in or waste to go out.

If you use a cell phone, use it on speakerphone or use one of those
adapters that use a hollow tube to transmit the sounds so that you don’t

(which is a cell phone earpiece that fits into your ear. This is absolutely
asking for trouble, because the microwave signal can penetrate into your
brain, something you do not want!

Minimize your cell phone use to only what is absolutely necessary. Remember
that although you can’t see, hear, or feel cellular signals, they are all
around you and doing damage to your health.

I know I’m not going to make any fans with this advice, but if you have
WiFi at home, get rid of it, and use either Homeplug wall plug adapters, or
run ethernet cable to whatever rooms you are using your computer in.

What is “Homeplug”? It’s a technology that uses the electrical wiring
in your home to function as a broadband Internet connection.

I use “Homeplug” myself and it works pretty well. I can just take the
module and plug it into pretty much any electrical outlet, and it works
fine. You can get these modules in electronics stores, or if you prefer
online.

You can also find ethernet cable at electronics stores, although it’s a bit
expensive to run any distance. I do suggest very strongly that if you have
babies or young children in your home that you DO NOT use WiFi (wireless),
as they are especially vulnerable to it’s effects.

Yes wireless is convenient and everybody out there is pushing it as the
next big thing, but it is probably one of the worst health hazards in our
environment. Sadly, I think that by the time society realizes this, many
people will have suffered from the ill effects.

Please don’t be one of them!

On a lighter note, here is a clip from Youtube that showcases a choral
performance in Riverdance.  The performance is by the Irish choral group
called Anuna.

Interestingly, I found out that Ireland has no historical choral tradition.
Anuna’s director Michael McGlynn explains that he pieced together fragments
of traditional medieval Irish chamber music, to come up with the
compositions that Anuna performs today.

The choral harmonies this groups performs are absolutely breathtaking!

Happy New Year!  This weeks topic is heavyhands, exercise, and weight loss…

For some odd reason I’m optimistic about the coming year despite the unlucky “13” aspect of it. I have some things I really want to accomplish this year and I know you do too.

My hope is that I can share some things with you that will help you move forward with your goals and plans whatever they may be. Health is key in all of this, and I will have some really cool stuff to share with you during the coming year.

Exercise resolutions are usually part of the New Year, but I am going to share some revelations with you about exercise that may really surprise you. Just remember in all this that in order to make it effective, you need to know just what you are trying to achieve.

To be effective, exercise should be intense and brief. The way exercise affects your hormonal system is the key. Long slow exercise raises levels of the stress hormone (cortisol) that tends to make you fatter. Hard to believe, but it’s true.

Brief and intense exercise has a positive effect on your hormone system, which results in fat burning and building of lean muscle tissue. For weight loss purposes all you need is about 15 minutes 3 times per week of brief intense exercise.

“Heavyhands” is a book that will show you how you can accomplish this and why it will work for you. It’s been out for a few years but still a great book and just as current as the day it was written!

Using this concept and following an “interval training protocol” I lost 10 lbs in two weeks with no dieting, and about 11.25 minutes of actual exercise (when you subtract rest periods) per session. This equals about 33.75 minutes of actual exercise per week!

“Heavyhands” will explain how having your hands weighted allows you to burn a lot more calories than you otherwise would. But it’s not just the calories you burn while exercising, it’s the boost in your metabolic rate that will have you burning more calories even when you are sacking out on the couch!

Now…I have some bragging to do. I attended the Boston Ballet production of the “Nutcracker” last week for the very first time and had the pleasure of watching my cousin Remy Anne in this time honored performance.

This was a very enjoyable show that seemed amazingly short to me, perhaps because it immerses you in that holiday fantasy world of dancing toy soldiers, princes and princesses, and of course “The Nutcracker.”

Remy is a pre-professional student at the Boston Ballet and she graced the stage as one of the Marzipan Shepherds. Although only time will tell, I believe she has the talent, passion, and perseverance to become a prima ballerina!

Remy comes from an artistic family, as her dad is an actor and her grandfather was a former professor at the Mass College of Art. They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I am proud of my cousin and it’s wonderful to see her develop into a great dancer.

If you have a chance to catch this wonderful show in your location, don’t hesitate, and of course it goes without saying that this is 100% OK for the youngest kids out there. They will love it for sure!

After attending the afternoon performance of the Nutcracker, we caught “The Hobbit” in IMAX.  I have never read any of Tolkien’s books, but have seen the ring trilogy and now the Hobbit.

This is a very enjoyable film, as it really immerses you in the fantasy world of “Middle Earth.” For me a good movie should draw you into the story and cause you to make an emotional connection to the characters.

“The Hobbit” did that for me and left me wanting more, just what a feature film should do. This is a film for all ages, although some scenes may be a bit rough for really young children.

Directed by Peter Jackson, and featuring a number of great actors like Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchette, Christopher Lee, Elijah Wood, and Ian McKellan as Gandalf reprised their roles.

This film ran nearly 3 hours, but seemed short to me. It was THAT engaging, and for me, this is what it’s all abut, that when  film ends you very much want the story to go on, and it does, but that will be left to the sequels!

This film scored at rating of 8.4 from IMDb.com, which pretty much says it all!

Winter can be tough on skin, with drying, windburn, and cold temperatures if you live in the northern latitudes. Remember that hydration is also important, and often you don’t get as thirsty as in summer, but you still need to drink plenty of water.

Use lip balms, and face creams to prevent against windburn and chapping. NaPCA by Twinlab is a great choice especially with added aloe to keep your skin hydrated. Remember to dress extra warmly as well, because:

heat loss=energy loss=lowered immunity from colds and flu!

I am working on what I call a “cold weather solution” but frankly there is not much research in this area for me to draw on. I will however have a recommendation for winter stress in the next newsletter, I just have to do some digging though before I can actually suggest something I am comfortable recommending to you, so stay tuned…
