With all the news coverage of the US government “shutdown” you would think the sky is falling. In truth about 85% of the US Federal government is still operating normally. I think we would do well to remember that private citizens are what keep everything going, and that government should serve our needs, not the other way around.

We still have to get up and go to work in the morning, pay our bills, take care of our families, and all the other things that life involves on a daily basis. So it goes with health as well. We are the stewards of our own health, and if we do not take care of ourselves, no “healthcare plan” whether private or government run will matter.

Our health is in OUR hands. Always remember that, and you will go a long way towards making sure that you have the health to enjoy your life fully and for a long time! One of the most important aspects of health is how your colon (also called the gut) functions.

Since certain neurotransmitters are actually made in your intestinal tract, “gut health” can affect your emotions, and thinking as well as how you physically feel. So as you can see it’s vitally important to have it functioning optimally!

Health of your stomach and colon is the key to overall health for several reasons. You need to absorb and assimilate your food for the nutrients your body needs. If your GI tract isn’t healthy, you can get needed nutrients from your foods.

The longer the “transit time” it takes for waste to exit the colon, the longer you are exposed to toxins that can create cancerous conditions in the body. Think about it, you wouldn’t keep your garbage in your kitchen for months, you would throw it out as soon as possible, because keeping it around is unsanitary.

The same can be said for eliminating waste from your body. It needs to happen every day, and be as complete as possible. An adequate amount of both soluble and insoluble fiber is essential to this process.

An example of insoluble fiber is Psyllium seed husks. These absorb water and provide a “bulking” effect to waste in the colon.

An example of soluble fiber is fruit like apples which also assist in elimination though stimulation of peristalsis (the process of moving the bowels). By the way, the bowels should be moved at least once per day if not more.

I have heard doctors tell their patients that this is not important. In the case of one gentleman I know, his doctor told him that a bowel movement every few days was “normal” for him. This is incredibly bad medical advice.

I have had good luck with just plain Psyllium husks in water, but of course your experience may be different. Whole grains like oat groats, quinoa, or ground flaxseeds can help provide the fiber that’s beneficial to the colon.

Another factor that’s important is the bacteria that is found in the colon. If it’s the normal beneficial bacteria then you will have normal bowel function, and neither be constipated or suffer from diarrhea.

You can get this beneficial bacteria either from probiotic supplements or dairy products like yogurt or kefir. Commercial yogurts and kefirs lose much of their benefit from pasteurization.  While I think the dangers of unpasteurized products are overblown, I can’t advise you to consume them for reasons of liability.

It’s safest to use a probiotic supplement or fermented dairy products as your probiotic source. Those of you who get my newsletter know that I am an advocate of the blood type diet.

When you buy these fermented dairy products, look for ones that advertise that they contain “live cultures.” This indicates they will have sufficient bacteria to be of help to you. Avoid products that contain a lot of sugar, or artificial sweeteners for obvious reasons.

Look for a live-cultured plain yogurt, preferably made from goat milk or a pasture raised cow’s milk. For kefir, the same rules follow. Plain and unsweetened is best, and you can add some berries for natural sweetening to the yogurt or kefir.

Probiotic bacteria is specific to blood type and in the near future I will be delving int that with some specific recommendations. Let’s suffice it to say that for all intents and purposes, the right probiotic foods and supplements for your blood type will result in a normally functioning colon and regular bowel movements.

So if what you are doing results in normal function, then you pretty much have it right!

The Boston Red Sox have won the World Series! I guess that’s about the most popular news story in these parts.  My father was a huge Red Sox fan and I only wish he could be here to savor this victory by his beloved baseball team!

Part of the reason they won the World Series is that they kept injuries to a minimum and went in to the post season will a physically intact team. Speaking of physically intact, I could use a lesson in remaining so.

I don’t quite know what I did, but it appears to have been a deep strain of the abdominal muscles due to doing an exercise I have not done in ages. Naturally I went too heavy on it and paid the price.

I have yet to figure out if it’s just a bad pull or worse, like a breach of the abdominal wall. In any case, it precludes any direct work to that area as I let it heal. With this news in mind, I would make a case for easing into ANY exercise program.

As I have mentioned many times, the real value of exercise is in the quality of the exercise NOT the quantity. It’s easy to overdo things, and the result is never positive when you do that, as evidenced by my latest injury issue.

Don’t get me wrong, exercise is one of the most important components in staying healthy, but understand that there is good exercise and not so good exercise. Always start very conservatively and don’t push too fast too soon.

Professional athletes and movies stars often embark on rigorous exercise routines because they have a limited amount of time to get into shape and millions of dollars are invested in what they are doing.

We however, being ordinary people are not forced by circumstance to rush this process and so should go slow and easy. If you are middle aged and don’t have a history of intense exercise, you should get checked out by a doctor prior to starting an exercise program.

Stress tests can indicate cardiac abnormalities that might give you a problem, and so it’s better to be safe than sorry. Even people with heart conditions can and should exercise, BUT they should also start very conservatively and build up their duration and intensity slowly.

Your beginning routine might be so easy that you doubt it’s helping you at all, but in truth you are being smart and setting the stage for future improvements. Even simple stretches to start and end your day might be all you need for a beginning routine until you feel that you want to bring things up a notch. At that point you can begin to build on a solid foundation.

For those of you who may be fibromyalgia sufferers or know someone who is, you might like to know that there are several products that can be of help. These products do not address the root cause of Fibro, BUT they can potentially offer some relief from the symptoms.

The first is called “methylfolate” and is a form of folic acid that can be absorbed and utilized by people with the MTHFR gene defect. Since 55% of the North American population carries that gene, lots of people out there cannot properly absorb folic acid.

Without the ability to properly absorb folic acid, the toxic amino acid homocysteine can build up in the blood causing increased inflammation which exacerbates Fibromyalgia. Using methylfolate can help lower homocystiene levels and thus help Fibro, not to mention lowering your risk of heart disease as well!

If you try this nutritional supplement, please let me know how it works for you. Dosage requirements would vary from person to person, but the rule of thumb I go by is to start with the smallest dose, and see how that works for you.

Start with one capsule (400 mcg) and you can take this 3-4 times per week or every other day. If you have the MTHFR gene defect, you should notice a feeling of calmness and well being.

You can tell if you have this defect by eating asparagus and noticing of yoiur urine has a strong odor afterward. If the odor is present, this is an indication that you have this gene defect, and would benefit by taking methyl donors like methylfolate, SAM-E, or trimethylglicine.

The other two items I will mention are magnesium, and malic acid. It’s quite possible that you could combine the two in the form of magnesium malate, and although I have never used this form of magnesium it would be logical that it might be effective.

I am half Armenian, well actually since I was adopted it’s more accurate to say that my father was of Armenian extraction, and I find that after his passing, I have an interest in learning more about the language and culture. It makes me feel closer to my father.

There is an instrument, a very ancient instrument from Armenia called the “Duduk.” It’s a wind instrument played with a reed that is appearing more often in Hollywood and other venues due to it’s mystical and enchanting sound.

The Armenians make this instrument from apricot wood and the legend is that this wood originally grew in the Garden of Eden which some scholars say was adjacent to Ancient Armenia, in the valley of the Zagros mountains in what is now Iran.

The Duduk has been described by some as sounding almost like a human voice and is not played all over the world by musicians, many of whom are not Armenian but were drawn to the instrument because of it’s soulful sound.

Being a huge Star Trek fan, this clip is a favorite of mine. In it, the character of Spock explains to fellow Vulcan Lt. Valeris, that there is much more to wisdom than just logic. It is interesting because it is an example of the way the character of Spock evolved in the films and learns to come to terms with his human half.

He learns that his Vulcan logic needs to be complimented by his human feelings and perspective. He understand the shortcomings of denying his true self and knows that he cannot achieve wisdom without fully embracing who and what he is.

I got a message from a young woman who had written to me years ago after visiting my antiaging website and asking me for advice for a health problem she was having. She was told she had a thyroid problem but through her own research found out she was misdiagnosed!

She had been put on Omprazole, which is a “proton pump inhibitor” which decreases stomach acid. This can cause malabsorption of food, and she had to fight her doctor to get the tests that indicated that she had vitamin deficiencies.

She was on Omeprazoe for years, and she learned this drug should only be taken for several weeks. She was misdiagnosed and improperly prescribed medication. It was only  through her own research and efforts that she is now on the road to recovery.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you have to do your own medical research to make sure your doctors diagnosis and advice is valid, but in many cases that’s what it comes down to. Nobody has as much interest in your health as YOU do!

Don’t assume that you are incapable of understanding things about your health. That’s the biggest mistake you can make! This is how the pharmaceutical industry has become so powerful and abusive. You can and MUST take an active role in protecting your health!

Ordinary people don’t trust in their own intelligence and intuitive wisdom to take control of their own health decisions. It’s always about the newest wonder drug or prescription they see peddled on TV , and they mistakenly assume this is the way to be healthier.

There are a few prescription drugs that are actually helpful in the short term because they control symptoms and allow people to function on a day to day basis. However the vast majority of these drugs are both dangerous and unnecessary, and more and more practicing physicians are coming to the same conclusion.

If your doctor refuses to listen to your concerns or chastises you for trying to learn more about your body and how it functions, then it’s time to find another physician. A good doctor will welcome a patient that is actively engaged in their own health decisions!

The Internet can be a great place to find information, but of course you have to use your head and sort out the bad information from the good. There are a number of good websites where you can find accurate and up to date information. I will list a few of these below:

I was about to say that fall is approaching, but in fact, it’s already here! Temperatures are dropping and it’s that time of year when people often get colds because they forget to dress warmly enough.

Yes I know about all the “scientific evidence” that supposedly disproves the idea that people “catch cold” because they don’t dress warmly enough, but my own personal experience seems to suggest otherwise.

The body is very sensitive to changes in it’s environment and this can have effects that you are not aware of. Take some time to evaluate your clothing going into fall and winter. Make sure you dress warmly and comfortably at all times.

Body heat is body energy…remember that! When you lose body heat you lose the energy your body needs for vital functions like your immune system and your hormonal system. Energy in the form of ATP is the “currency” of your day to day health. Preserve it!

Remember, ALWAYS dress warmly, preserve your precious energy for needed body functions, not warming the outside environment! The Earth has plenty of energy, it doesn’t need more from your body!

I can’t give a specific recommendation for thermal and cold weather wear because I am not an expert, but from what I have found online rial polypropylene is considered the best for outdoors.

Do some research on the web and get some good quality winter wear for both outside and inside. You will feel better and stay healthier!

For people who are into musical theater, Steven Sondheim is a magical name! This is one of Sonheim’s best songs sung by none other than Bernadette Peters. She becomes emotionally overwhelmed during the performance.

I believe this is because some years ago she lost her husband in a helicopter accident. It almost seemed like the orchestra kind of marked time a bit to allow her to recover her composure and finish the song. This is truly a heartfelt performance.

For some reason the aftermath of Labor Day seems to be a time when we get back to work (metaphorically speaking) after the lazy days of summer. Yeah I know, most of us work year round, but there is a sense of “getting back to normal” that characterizes the end of summer.

With that said, I have vowed to resurrect two of my blogs which were decimated by Google’s Panda and Penguin algorithms. My cholesterol blog will need a major re-write because new information about cholesterol and heart disease needs to be incorporated into the blog.

The simplistic “cholesterol causes heart disease” story just does not wash anymore and thus I have to change things to reflect this new knowledge. To be honest, the topic of human lipid biochemistry is very complex and beyond my understanding on a deep level.

I am going to try and boil it down to it’s essence and present simple strategies to cut the risk of heart disease across the board. This will involve a lot of research and rethinking what I thought I knew, but of course it is well worth it.

I always want to give people the read my articles the best most up to date information I can. I can however give you a few simple rules of thumb that will always be valid and effective, even as new information about cholesterol makes it’s way to the public.

These five things will reduce your risk of heart disease:

Limit sugar intake: (this includes simple sugars, alcoholic beverages, AND processed carbohydrates from grains)

Do not cook with or otherwise consume poly unsaturated oils like canola, corn, ect. The only oils safe for cooking are olive oil (for low heat) and coconut oil (for high heat)

Get some kind of regular exercise at least three times per week. This can be “power walking”, pushups or situps, circuit resistance training ect. This is because building and maintain lean muscle mass helps blood sugar control which protects against heart disease.

Try making your diet more alkaline by including more vegetables, a little bit of fruit, and plenty of clean pure water.

Doing these five things will go a long way toward protect you from heart disease, because they address all the underlying causes. Notice that I didn’t suggest avoiding foods that are high in cholesterol.

That’s because cholesterol does not “cause” heart disease, and the amount of cholesterol in your diet is really not an important factor in heart health. Besides, cholesterol is a vital substance that your body cannot do without.

Too low a cholesterol level leaves you vulnerable to heart disease, cancer, strokes, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s Disease to mention a few!

So the bottom line is, don’t restrict cholesterol, DO eat healthy foods, reduce stress, and lower your blood sugar and you will be doing 80% of the things that are needed to prevent heart disease!

I just watched the new Tom Cruise sci-fi film called “Oblivion” and don’t quite know why it didn’t do that well at the box office. While I thought the plot had more than it’s share of twists and was a bit convoluted, it was (to me) an enjoyable film and delivered in the action and “coolness” department.

I admit that I love sci-fi, and so found it enjoyable. If there was one thing that I could fault in this film it was that you never quite find yourself emotionally invested in the characters and storyline.

Contrast that with “Avatar” which for me WAS an emotionally engaging story! In any case, I think you will find “Oblivion” enjoyable to watch if not compelling. I think this is the look and feel of sci-fi films to come.

However what I am really looking forward to is the network TV series “Agents of Shield,” as the characters and concept are familiar to me because I read Marvel Comics as a kid!

The first episode is September 24th and I will be critiquing it at that time. Bear McCreary the man behind Battlestar Gallactica’s soundtrack will be doing the music for the show which is exciting. Well have to wait and see how it all turns out…

It captures the essence of the show which tells the story of the “diaspora” of humanity in escaping from a genocide at the hands of the artificial lifeforms they created.

Last issue I talked about how I “rediscovered” hydration and how important it was to how your body functions. Upon further research I found that it can take weeks to fully rehydrate yourself if you are chronically dehydrated.

I can’t believe how much of a difference it makes as I am still feeling the benefits of drinking more water. What are the benefits I notice? More fullness to the muscles, more energy, clearer thinking and less stress.

Those of you who are concerned about the health and appearance of your skin (and who isn’t) take note as well. Water is critical for skin health, in terms of maintaining the firmness and elasticity of your skin. Drinking more clean water will help your skin more than any other single thing!

Not bad for something as simple and available as clean water!

The summer is flying by and it’s hard to believe that Labor Day is just around the corner. My newest project will be to investigate ionic air cleaners. I had a positive experience with one many years ago, and want to see if I get the same result again.

I visited a friend and she had one in her home. I remembered thinking that it couldn’t be all that effective and was kind of a gimmick that “health nuts” were into, but lo and behold, when I got home I slept like a log that night!

It made me feel the same way as I do when I use a grounding pad. I had no way of knowing at that time about the benefits of negative ions, so I did not make the connection. However when I look back on it now, it makes perfect sense.

My thinking is that if you can create an environment in your home that is abundant in negative ions, you would have a less stressful more health supporting living space. I am looking at ionizers now and in the coming weeks will hopefully have a recommendation for a unit that is reasonable priced and of course is a good quality one, so stay tuned.

Diabetes is a disease that is reaching epidemic proportions especially in the US. We are now seeing it in children, something that was unheard of years ago. There is no question that all of the processed foods we eat are a factor in this disease.

Now you may be asking what diabetes has to do with antiaging. Well, keep in mind that inflammation is a huge factor in aging, and insulin is the most PRO-INFLAMMATORY hormone in the human body! Use of insulin will cause you to age faster, so you will want to minimize it by keeping blood sugar under control.

Even though insulin is necessary for life, chronically high levels of insulin can wreak havoc with your body, and contribute to all kinds of health problems. Insulin dependent diabetics thus have additional health problems due to their use if insulin.

Even if you are not a diabetic, you should try and keep your fasting blood sugar reading no higher than 70! Fasting glucose test measures your blood sugar when you arise in the morning. For every point above 70 your risk of heart disease goes up!

There are things that remind you that time is passing and seemingly quicker than it used to. My niece just turned 23 and is a married mom of 2. I remember babysitting her one evening many years ago so her mom and dad could get a rare night out.

She was months old and pretty much cried all of the evening until her mom came home, and then she was perfectly content again. Now she she has a 4 year old and a months old infant son of her own to care for. It’s hard to believe those years passed so quickly.

Fortunately for me, I keep learning and discovering new things that I believe can retain the quality of our health and give us many more years of enjoyable life. I promised that in this newsletter I would share cutting edge stuff with you and here’s an interesting item I just discovered.

I think I talked about the MTHFR gene defect in one of my past newsletters. It’s pretty common in North Americans. About 55% of the population have some variant of this gene, and it can cause a lot of health problems.

The cheap and easy way to tell if you have this gene defect is to eat asparagus and note whether your urine has a strong odor after about an hour or so. If it does, then you have the gene defect.

The MTHFR gene is responsible for converting folic acid into a form that the human body can actually use called “Methylenetetrahydrofolate” This is known as the “reduced” or “methylated” form of folic acid.

Since your body cannot use ordinary folic acid, this gene must be working correctly in order to convert folic acid into the methylated form. What happens when the gene is defective?

Well…your risk for things like cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, stroke, depression, migraines, birth defects, miscarriage, mental illness, ect. Are greatly increased! Methylation is also how your body repairs your DNA (and protects you from cancer).

That’s the bad news!  The “good news” is that I have stumbled on a cheap nutritional supplement that can help anyone with this gene defect. That may sound like quite a claim, but it has a very sound basis in science.

I just picked up a bottle and do notice quite a difference, mainly the mental aspects of this gene problem being alleviated. I feel more relaxed, less tense and anxious. That is the outward sign that the product is working.

Start with one capsule (400 mcg) and you can take this 3-4 times per week or every other day. If you have the MTHFR gene defect, you should notice a feeling of calmness and well being.

You can tell if you have this defect by eating asparagus and noticing of yoiur urine has a strong odor afterward. If the odor is present, this is an indication that you have this gene defect, and would benefit by taking methyl donors like methylfolate, SAM-E, or trimethylglicine.

Call me infantile…BUT I ‘ve always been a comic book aficionado. I grew up reading Marvel Comics and to a lesser extent DC as well. With that said, it’s way cool to see the characters I read so many years ago, being recreated on the big screen.

Thor 2 “The Dark World” will be out in November, as will Captain America “The Winter Soldier.” Captain America is played by actor Chris Evans who grew up in Sudbury, Massachusetts, about 30 minutes from where I live.

I can’t wait for these films and will review them when they are out. “Agents of Shield” is coming to television in the fall, I believe the first episode will be September 24th.  Due to demand by fans, Agent Phil Coulson will be resurrected from the dead (he died in The Avengers). He plays “director Fury’s” right hand man.

This series should be great fun!

I read something interesting the other day to the effect that the country with the most Nobel Prize winners (Sweden) also has the highest per capita milk consumption. This may seem strange because of all the negative press that milk drinking has gotten lately.

But consider that most of the problems with commercial milk are due to pasteurization. When you heat milk you denature the proteins and destroy the beneficial enzymes and bacteria in it.

This bacteria is said to be beneficial to your digestive system, which in turn has a direct affect on your brain. Researchers on the cutting edge of nutrition and health have discovered that having the right balance of healthy bacteria in the colon is essential to making your brain work properly.

One of the best ways of doing this is drinking raw milk! This is controversial because so called “health authorities” have convinced people that raw milk is unhealthy and dangerous, which is completely untrue.

However it must come from clean dairy farms with healthy clean cows, and not from factory farms where overcrowding of animals and use of hormones and antibiotics contribute to an unhealthy environment for dairy cows.

I am going to purchase raw milk and report back to you on my experiences with it. Many adults are supposedly lactose intolerant, but my guess is that part of this problem stems from the pasteurization process and it’s effect on the milk.

There is so much focus on probiotics now that they are being mainstreamed and sol in supermarkets in the form of products like Activia and promoted in commercial yogurt, which unfortunately is also pasteurized.

Raw unpasteurized (and unhomogenized) milk is the real deal and if we ever are able to turn back the laws and regulations that are being used to stamp out raw milk, I think we will see a new super food available to the public once more.

You won’t look at regular pasteurized milk and other dairy products the same way again. Pasteurization is heat treatment that damages and denatures the milk. This kills ALL of the bacteria, good and bad.

This explains why so many people seem to show allergic reactions to pasteurized milk products.

If you have never heard Bruce Hornsby play or seen him in person, I urge you to do so. I think he is the most unique and expressive pianist on popular music today. He would never be considered a great vocalist, but his music will inspire and delight anyone lucky enough to hear it.

This is a 36 minute set at the Stone Mountain Performance Center in Brownfield, Maine. He excels at these smaller venues. There are elements of country music, pop, jazz, classical, bluegrass, swing, ect. in his playing. Although he is considered a pop musician there’s a strong country feel to his music.

His piano solos are legendary and often encompass several musical styles (classical, jazz, country) all in the same musical piece. The lyrics of the songs are often about people, places, and things he grew up around in his native Virginia. Hope you enjoy this as much as I do!

I recently got an email from a gentleman asking that I correct the address on the listing for his dad’s medical clinic in my antiaging doctor directory, which I did right away. I noticed that the website he referenced pertained to something called thermography.

Thus I decided to make it the topic of this weeks newsletter. It’s a very important one because it concerns the detection of breast cancer, something that’s vitally important to every woman out there.

Infrared thermography or thermography for short is an imaging technique that can detect developing breast cancer years before it actually forms a tumor in the breast. The technique uses thermal imaging to detect a concentration of blood vessels that are forming to supply nutrients to a tumor mass.

When cancerous tumors form, they need a very dense collection of blood vessels supplying them with nutrients, because tumor cells are so terribly inefficient at creating energy.

These tumor cells can’t survive on the normal blood supply that healthy tissue utilizes, so they develop whats called a “vascular network” which shows up on the thermography scan as a hot spot.

This process can be underway years before a tumor actually forms, and can give the woman a warning that something is wrong and needs to be medically addressed. This is different from a mammogram which uses x-rays to detect a solid tumor mass.

Mammograms cannot detect cancer until a tumor has already formed, giving a woman far less time to intervene medically to deal with the developing cancer. It would be irresponsible of me to suggest that thermography replaces mammograms, because they do different things. However thermography is a very valuable tool for advanced detection of breast cancer.

The two advantages of thermography are that it uses no radiation, therefore it is very safe and will not increase the risk of cancer the way mammograms can. The other advantage is that it picks up developing cancer years before it becomes a problem.

I believe that thermography needs to be available to every woman, as a tool to detect developing cancer and allow her time to prevent the development of a tumor and the spread of the cancer from the breast to other parts of the body.

I love science fiction, especially the “super hero” genre. I just saw the “man of Steel” the 2013 version of the Superman saga. I had heard pro and con about this film, but I have to say I was quite impressed by this film.

The film was directed by Zack Snyder and stars Henry Cavill as Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Cavill’s Superman though different than Chris Reeves, retains the essence of who and what Superman is.

He presents a deeply principled individual of great power who understands the necessity of restraint. He is (just like Chris Reeves) the consummate gentleman, who puts the well being of others before himself. This is the kind of selfless persona that you expect from this character.

Lois Lane played by Amy Adams is a far cry from the previous versions of that character. She is tough and resourceful in her own way and gets into the action, helping Superman escape from captivity by General Zod.  Adams in my view does a great job with this iconic character!

The action sequences are mind blowing thanks to state of the art CGI. The villains (General Zod and company) seem harsher and more violent than in past films, and the ending which I will not give away, follows this pattern.

If you are up for a good time at the movies, I would highly recommend “Man of Steel.” It’s great fun and will not disappoint.

Do you remember Vanessa Williams? She was the first “black” Miss America and had to give up the title because it was found that she had posed nude years before, and the pictures surfaced and caused a scandal.

She rebounded from this experience to become the most successful entertainer of any former Miss America.

As I sit here in the middle of June,  it is a comfortable 65 degrees in Somerville, and while I am not complaining, I don’t remember it being this cool so late in the season when I was a kid.

I honestly think we are entering an era of cooler weather, but then again, it’s hard to tell. I like the fact that I haven’t even put my air conditioners in yet…it’s been that comfortable. I do hope it continues, although I am sure we will be in for some sweltering days soon.

I’d like to mention a few things I think are important in the area of health and wellness. These are things that if you do them, you will have 80-90% of the health issues covered. For those that want to do 100%, that’s great, but start with the basics.

With that said here are three things you should do to live longer, and healthier.

Get enough vitamin-d in winter and summer. Vitamin-d is not really a vitamin, it’s a hormone called cholcalciferol. It’s used in many critical processes in your body, and if you don’t get enough of it your risk for things like cancer and heart disease go up!

People of African ancestry that live in cooler climates are especially vulnerable to deficiencies in vitamin-d because their darker skin filters out the UV light the body needs to bio-synthesize this critical hormone.

Avoid refined sugar in all forms. This includes high fructose corn syrup, Agave nectar, maltodextrin, ect. Sugar raises blood glucose levels, which in turn raise insulin levels. Insulin is a “pro-inflammatory” hormone that significantly raises your risk for cancer, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.

Processed foods are largely a form of refined sugar, since they are mostly grain products that break down rapidly in your blood stream, spiking your blood sugar and insulin levels which in turn aggravate inflammation and promote chronic disease.

I think that grounding or “Earthing” should be a very important part of your daily routine. Think of grounding as receiving antioxidants from the Earth all of the time you are grounded, and you will see why this practice is so important.

Grounding helps you establish the proper electromagnetic balance in your body, which protects you from free radical damage and slows down the aging process. There is probably no single thing that is more beneficial to you than grounding.

You might wonder why I didn’t mention things like getting enough sleep, and exercise, but truthfully, if you do the above 3 things, you will likely be able to sleep a lot better. As far as exercise, most people do it incorrectly and that can have negative results.

Exercise has two real benefits, that it controls blood sugar, and helps maintain muscle and bone density. If you avoid sugar, and get into the habit of grounding every day, this will go a long way toward controlling blood sugar.

It will also help maintain the function of your endocrine glands, which produce the anabolic hormones that maintain your muscle tissue. So all exercise really does is to signal your hormonal system to produce certain hormones.

Don’t get me wrong, exercise (if done right) is still valuable, but if you do the other things mentioned, you will remain HEALTHY and ACTIVE for all of your life, and thus will be getting your exercise in the process, and that’s the key!
