There’s no time like the present! I know you have heard that before, but until something really hits you you don’t fully understand the meaning of that phrase. I recently got word that a friend of mine who was 52 years of age died suddenly of a heart attack.

The was someone I had not seen for some years, but from the pictures I have seen he looked to be in good health and good spirits. He leaves behind a wife and daughter and many friends who are I am sure just as perplexed as I am by this turn of events.

Life is short, and sometimes unfairly short. It reminds us that we should not let time go by without doing the things we want to do, and making the most of the time we have. This applies in all areas of life, from your work, to your family and social life.

It is always the right time to make positive changes in your health and well being. There are many new tools available to help you, some of which I will be reviewing here.
However don’t be afraid to get out there and start, because you will never learn until you take the first steps. You have to make mistakes before you can correct them and learn from them.

Success if nothing more than a process of doing things, learning, and making corrections when needed. You continually refine the processes you use until you get to the point where you are producing consistent results time after time. Promoting good health is a series of corrections you make to your diet, exercise and approach to stress.

Eventually you will learn exactly what your body and mind need to be in optimal health. You can be moving toward better health even as you age, if you are willing to learn and apply what you learn in real time.

Every weightlifter, bodybuilder, and powerlifter knows and understands the value of squats. The squat exercise is hundreds and perhaps even thousands of years old. Humans have been squatting both as exercise and as a functional movement pattern as long as there have been humans on the Earth.

The exercise is probably the single most effective for building strength and health. Why would this be? Well, it’s partly because the legs are the foundation of the body and of our overall body strength.

The other reason is that squats positively affect the autonomic nervous system, which is the part of our nervous system that is involved with digestion, elimination, rest, and regeneration. This is probably the reason they are such effective muscle builders.

But they have benefits for everyone young and old alike. I began doing squats when I was 14 years old and still continue to do them to this day! As a result, I can maintain a stable weight and flat stomach at age 58 with very little effort.

The muscle I have built using squats and other functional exercises allows me to easily keep excess weight off and maintain a foundation of strength without long or frequent workouts.

Hindu wrestlers in India did hundreds of squats a day which they called Hindu squats or “bethaks.” The tremendous conditioning effect of this exercise allowed the Hindu wrestlers to easily defeat the best wrestlers in Europe and the world over.

I would suggest that you do this exercise 2-3 times per week to start, and perform 3 sets of 5-10 repetitions. Always start very conservatively with these because they are VERY demanding on your system.

As you go along, you will get a feel for how often you can do them and how much is too much.  I can tell you from experience that no other exercise will give you the benefits that the Hindu squat will.

They will help everything from weight control to health enhancement. You may even find they are helpful if you have a problem with regularity because again, they affect the “parasympathetic nervous system” which controls the bowels.

As you progress, you can add weight in the form of a light kettlebell

or even a dumbbell or barbell plate held in your hands. There are lots of variations of the basic squat movement that you can explore but start with the simple basic squat first and master that.

Then you can improvise and be as creative as you want with how often you do them, how many repetitions, ect. You can even combine them with other exercises in a circuit type routine because they will make ANY exercise routine more demanding and effective.

Add squats in some form to your exercise routine and you will be amazed at the benefits you will get from this simple and ancient exercise!

Age Better #28 – What are bad estrogens?

The Affordable Care Act is in the news again, and it looks like this
health care law has still has quite a rocky road ahead of it. It is shaping
up to be far more expensive than it’s backers claimed, AND it may be headed
for another Supreme Court challenge as well.

Personally I don’t want to see it implemented, because I see it for what it
really is, a massive new entitlement based on “pharmaceutical medicine”
not real health care reform. With that said, my advice would be to learn to
optimize your own health.

Government involvement in health care is always problematic, because
everything that government does it first and foremost politically
motivated. That’s just the nature of government bureaucracy, but it does
not lead to good health for us as individuals.

But your health, shouldn’t be a matter of politics or the profits of
giant corporations. It should be about what’s in YOUR best interests, and
that’s the reason I urge you to learn about your own body and seek ways to
better your own health, not depend on so called “government health
authorities” for the answers.

Our health care system is based on a “one size fits all” mass produced
solution that treats everyone the same and refuses to recognize the
validity of anything other than “drug base d medicine.”  We can do
better than that. We MUST do better than that.

Do your own research! There are many great resources out there for health
and wellness, that will help you get and stay healthy. I try in this
newsletter to expose you to some of these antiaging and wellness concepts
but you need to explore them on your own as well.

On of the biggest threats to your health today are something called
“xenoestrogens” or “endocrine disruptors.” These are man made
chemicals that are similar to estrogens, but that have harmful effects on
your body.

These environmental estrogens can cause breast cancer in women and prostate
cancer in men. They can cause weight gain in both men and women, and they
can also cause depression and impotence in men by lowering
testosterone.

If you want to look and feel good, and be healthy, you have to rid yourself
of these chemicals. You can do this by avoiding foods and household
products that contain estrogens, and by using nutritional supplements that
support estrogen clearing through the liver.

Israeli author Ori Hoffmeckler has written an excellent guide to estrogen
detoxification called “The Anti-Estrogenic Diet.” This excellent book
covers exercise, diet, nutritional supplements, and has meal plans and
recipes to help you avoid bad estrogens in your diet.

For those of you who like “Westerns” you might want to check out a film
called “Tombstone.” This is the story of Wyatt Earp and the famous
gunfight at the OK Corral.

What’s interesting is that the gunfight started over a town ordinance
against wearing guns in town, that the Earp brothers and Doc Holiday tried
to enforce.

“Tombstone” was well acted and shot, and I really loved the musical
score. Great performances by Kurt Russell, and great supporting roles by
Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday, and Isabella Rossellini as “big nosed
Kate,” Doc Holliday’s common law wife.

Age Better #26 – Custom Gourmet Protein Powder

When I started this week’s newsletter, it was before the terrible events at
the Boston Marathon. I was actually in Cambridge, a couple of miles from
the site of the bombing, and heard the subway was diverted around the
affected area.

What’s there to say other than this was a terrible tragedy, and that our
hearts go out to all the people and families that have been affected by
this senseless violence.

People gathered peacefully for an athletic event, were subject to
unspeakable evil. My young cousin and her mother were at the site of the
bombing and thankfully left ten minutes prior to when the bomb when off.

Our family is thankful they missed the bomb’s detonation by mere minutes.
It really makes you stop and think about how fragile and precious life
really is. It reminds us that we should all have the take opportunity to do
the things we have been putting off.

Life is really a series of opportunities taken and acted upon. Whatever
your passion, don’t wait to act upon your desires and goals. Move forward,
because you never know just how much time you!

Well it’s finally getting warmer around here. Somebody must have reminded
Mother Nature than it’s spring already, time for some nice weather for us
winter weary New Englanders.

I have a brand new tenant, and really lucked out on this one. His name is
Devon, he’s a marketing manager, musician, and craft beer aficionado. He
appreciates being so close to Boston, and all the great restaurants and
clubs in our area.

Since my neighborhood is minutes from one of the hippest spots in greater
Boston “Davis Square,” it’s the idea location from which to enjoy the
local flavor. I feel lucky to live where I do, with everything I need just
minutes from my doorstep!

I recently changed my diet up a bit and overall am eating somewhat less
protein. I wanted to get away from protein supplementation and more to real
foods, but what I found is that my energy suffered.

I found this a bit confusing, because we’ve always been told by
“nutritionists” that protein is not the preferred energy source for
your body. This may be true, but I find that when I eat more protein, I
have more energy, and seem to need less sleep. What gives?

Well, I did some research and found that ATP synthesis requires protein,
because enzymes (which are made of protein) are needed to bio-synthesize
ATP. This makes sense to me, because I always felt more energy when my
protein intake was higher.

How high? Well I would say 1 gram of protein for every pound of
body-weight, make that lean body-weight. So for instance if you weight 200
lbs, at 20% bodyweight, then your lean bodyweight is about 160 lbs. Your
protein intake should be about 160 grams.

While you can certainly get that much protein just eating solid foods,
getting the required amount of protein becomes an issue of convenience.
That’s where protein powders come in. Good protein powder is not cheap, but
if you are exercising a lot, it’s probably a good idea to supplement with
extra protein.

Age Better #25 – When healthcare really isn’t healthy

When I first started to write this newsletter, I vowed NOT to make it
political, but I do want to say some things about our healthcare system,
why I feel it’s going in the wrong direction, and what you can do to
protect YOUR health from the healthcare system.

The American healthcare system is based first on profit! Now there’s
nothing wrong with profit. We are a capitalist system, and the object of
any private business is to make money. But there are ethical and moral
standards that I believe should always apply.

Our healthcare system is based on treating symptoms of disease with
patented drugs, rather than identifying the causes of disease and
eliminating them. The government subsidizes junk food companies that make
the products that contribute to disease.

This is why I am always dubious of the idea that government can improve the
health of citizens, when in fact it promotes the very things that make us
unhealthy. The good news is that you don’t have to be a victim of the
medical system.

You can keep yourself out of the medical system, and safeguard your health
for many years to come, if you do these three things:

Get 15 minutes of vigorous exercise at least 3 times per week

Get 8 hours of sound sleep every night (preferably getting to bed before
midnight)

Keep sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and trans fats to an absolute minimum
in your diet

There is a fourth thing that you can add and that is “grounding” which
I talked about in an earlier newsletter. You can learn more about grounding

Most health problems and chronic diseases have the same underlying cause,
and that’s inflammation. All the strategies I mentioned above will help
decrease inflammation and lead to better health. It’s not rocket science,
but lots of people still over-think it.

Don’t avoid or put off doing these things because you can’t do them
perfectly or you can’t ALWAYS do them. Nothing people do is perfect, but
just do the best you can, and you will be miles ahead of where most people
are!

Vaccines are a big business these days and they are currently being
“pushed” on the public at every turn. This is because they are a huge
moneymaker for the drug industry, but there is very little evidence that
they actually protect your health.

Also, the US Supreme Court has rules that vaccine companies are immune from
lawsuits for any damages their vaccines cause to your health. So you have
no legal protections from these vaccines and their effects.

What protects you from disease is a strong immune system, but some of the
ingredients in these vaccines actually weaken the immune system which
leaves you vulnerable to diseases.

My late mother used to get “flu shots” every year, and every year she
got the flu. They never prevented the flu in her case because her immune
system was weak. She trusted the doctors who pushed the flu shot, but sadly
they were wrong and her trust was misplaced.

If you are being urged to get “vaccinated” push back on these medical
people and demand they show you real scientifically documented evidence
that the vaccine is safe and effective. My guess is that they will not be
able to because the evidence isn’t there.

This is especially true where vaccination of children is concerned. The
autism rate for children at one time was 1 in 10,000. Now it is 1 in 88,
and is actually more like 1 in 55 or so among males children.

Autism rates have pretty much paralleled the increase in vaccinations given
children, and while that’s not proof that autism is caused by vaccines, it
is a very suspicious “co-incidence!”

The bottom line is that you should be very cautious about ANYTHING a
medical person wants to inject into your body OR your child’s body. You are
ultimately responsible for your health and the health of your children.

For this reason you should always “do your research” on vaccines or any
other drug that doctors want to give you! Don’t let the “system” profit
at the expense of your health!

On a lighter note, the new Iron Man film is coming out on May 3rd.
Interestingly, they are showing a different version in China, perhaps in
part because the “The Mandarin” (the villain in the film), is Chinese,
but is being played by British actor Ben Kingsly.

I love the sci-fi/techno aspects of the film, and of course Robert Downey
Jr. is perfect to play Tony Stark! I read the comics when I was a kid, and
it’s kind of exciting to be seeing these stories adapted to the big screen,
using modern special effects that make it all seem so real!

I will do a review on this film when it comes out and i’ve seen it, but it will
probably be the sci-fi hit of the year.

This weeks musical clip is one of my very favorites, and has a special
meaning for me. This song called “Sweet Baby” by George Duke and
Stanley Clark came out in 1981. It was the year that I won the US nationals
in Powerlifting.

I had a hard training cycle for that contest and had to lose over 20 pounds
in a weeks time to make weight for the contest. When I arrived in Boise
Idaho for the championships this beautiful and upbeat song was the first
thing I heard playing as I rode in the limo to my hotel.

Age Better #20 – A Diet Secret, Sweet Potatoes, and a Sad Goodbye

They say all good things must come to an end…but for the life of me, I
can’t understand why! I just got news today that my tenants of five years
are moving out at the end of the month. I am sorry to see them go, but
happy for the opportunities they will have.

Shannon and her husband Russ have been great tenants, and have brought a
spark of life and humor into this grand old house. Shannon has gotten a
great job offer in San Francisco, and so these two native New Englanders
are West Coast bound!

I wish them all the luck in the world, but this address will seem that much
emptier in their absence. But at the same time, I am lucky to have had them
as tenants for five good years.

I’ve discovered “sweet potatoes” which actually are not potatoes at all
but something called  “tubers,” which is a form of root I believe. The
cool thing about sweet potatoes is their effect on blood sugar, and this
was news to me.

In a previous newsletter I wrote about green coffee extract, which can help
lower blood sugar and aid in weight loss. Apparently the key ingredient
that makes it so effective is “chlorogenic acid,” which is also
contained in sweet potatoes.

I tend to get somewhat addicted to certain foods and then eat them until I
get tired of them. One night I decided to try something different and
steamed a sweet potato with my vegetables.

It tasted pretty darn good, but I was afraid that like all potatoes, the
starch in them would result in weight gain. Surprisingly the opposite
happened! It seems that I’ve gotten leaner since I have been eating them.

I researched this a bit and found that they are high in fiber, they are
actually not a potato, and they contain the same blood sugar lowering
compound that is found in green coffee extract. The chlorogenic acid in
them prevents blood sugar spikes.

When blood sugar doesn’t spike, insulin levels aren’t elevated, and as you
know…insulin is a fat storage hormone. So the bottom line is that you can
include sweet potatoes (not yams) in your diet often and will actually get
a bit of a weight loss benefit as well.

This is providing you don’t put tons of butter or sugar on them when you
cook them. Oh and while we are on the subject of cooking them, I’ve found
the best way to enjoy them is steamed.

Another great benefit of sweet potatoes are their content of beta-carotene

This is my favorite way to prepare vegetables including the sweet potato.
Give it a shot…I’m betting you will really like it. This works great
because it’s so easy and simple to prepare.

I bought mine something like five years ago and it’s still going strong. It

The “diet secret” I mentioned really isn’t a secret, it’s just that
it’s not well known. Insulin is the key to weight loss. It’s the most
anabolic hormone in the body, and when it’s high, you will store fat and
put on weight.

When you keep it low, you will be able to burn fat and lose weight. Is it
really that simple? YES! Unless you have some medical condition that makes
you gain weight, you can lose by keeping insulin low.

This works whether you exercise or not, but of course it works better when
you do. The trick is to keep your daily carbs under 150 grams, or even
better under 100!  Do this for a while and you will begin to lose the
cravings for sugar and carbs.

Combining foods during your meals is another important thing. Eat some
quality protein with EVERY meal. This helps prevent blood sugar (and
insulin) from spiking. Keeping your insulin low will also extend your
lifespan and prevent chronic diseases.

a recommendation for it. I will share it very soon, once I am satisfied
that it’s workable and safe.

Age Better #19 – The sugar that’s good for your teeth

It’s a good thing that spring is just around the corner. I’ve had enough of
snow and sub freezing temperatures for the year thank you! I know my cats
feel the same way, because they love basking in the sun on my indoor porch
whenever they can.

I’ve managed to stay healthy this winter, thanks to eating well, staying
grounded and my RIFE therapy setup (which I will be explaining in an
upcoming newsletter. ) My thinking about how to stay healthy has changed.

I have become aware that cell energy really is the key to health. When your
cell energy is low, health suffers. When it’s high, you  health soars. I’m
learning  more about this every day and will be sharing what I discover
with you very soon.

The one thing you should always do is to “think outside the box,”
because this is where you will find the answers you are looking for. I just
wish someone had taught me this when I was young, as it would have
saved me quite a bit of trouble!

I just got finished watching the Oscars and realized that I haven’t seen
ANY of the pictures that were nominated for awards. I guess I need to get
out more. I also realized how many famous actors and actresses no longer
with us, which is sad.

I know that today’s actors and actresses are just as good as those of times
past, but they don’t seem to be the iconic “movie stars” like those
legendary Hollywood actors of the golden era.

I’m old enough to remember actors like Clark Gable, Betty Davis, Jimmy
Stewart and Liz Taylor when they were in their heyday. That was the golden
era of Hollywood and as far as I am concerned will never be equaled.

However it also seems that the Oscars are now more representative of actors
from all over the world, which I think is pretty awesome. Actors from other
countries and cultures are doing some exciting things in film and I  think
we will all be treated to many great performances in the years to come.

Now I want to tell you about a sugar that is actually GOOD for you! Yeah,
you heard that right. It’s called “Xylitol,” and it’s something you will be
hearing more about in the near future. It’s safe, natural, and does some
really good things in the body.

Xylitol is actually a sugar alcohol, which is extracted from plants, mostly
trees and corn. Native American’s used to used to chew tree bark to keep
their teeth and gums healthy. I don’t think the taste was very good, but we
know that the bark contained the sugar we call Xylitol.

It’s a safe sugar substitute, but it also has health benefits as well.
Here are the stats on this amazing sugar:

Can prevent cavities
Can lower risk of heart disease
40% fewer calories than table sugar
75% less carbohydrates than table sugar
Inhibits plaque formation on teeth
Helps re-mineralize damaged tooth enamel
Prevents demineralization of healthy teeth
Maintains healthy PH levels / inhibits acidty
Does not spike insulin levels
Does not cause elevations in blood sugar
Safe for diabetics
Looks, cooks, and tastes just like sugar

I highly recommend that you check out and use Xylitol. Since I have a corn
allergy, I used the kind that’s extracted from trees. The only problem it
has a “laxative” effect if you use large amounts of it. So go easy on
the amounts you use.

The product I use is called “Xyla” and it’s extracted from hardwood
trees grown in the US. I like this because again…I don’t react well to

I just wanted to mention something about diet and weight issues. I don’t
want to trivialize this subject because I know it’s difficult for lots of people,
but really…it’s all about how many carbs your metabolism can cope with on
a daily basis.

If you get this right, everything else falls into place. Carbs (processed
and high glycemic) cause elevations in insulin. Insulin is a fat storing
hormone. When you lower the processed carbs you are eating, your insulin
levels are lower and you lose weight!

I will write about this more in a future newsletter, but a good rule of
thumb is to keep carbohydrates to 150 grams per day or less. That will help
you lose weight and keep it off. It will work even without exercise,
although exercise makes it work much better.

Last time I shared one of my favorite singers (Julia Fordham) with you.
This time I would like you to check out “Anuna,” which is a great
choral group from Ireland.

What’s interesting is that according to Michael McGlynn (Anuna’s musical
director) Ireland has no native historic choral tradition, which really
surprised me!

McGlynn took fragments of Medieval Irish music and created arrangements
for the group. The effect is stunning. Anuna first came to public attention
when they toured with Riverdance. They are still together and making
great music!

Happy New Year!  This weeks topic is heavyhands, exercise, and weight loss…

For some odd reason I’m optimistic about the coming year despite the unlucky “13” aspect of it. I have some things I really want to accomplish this year and I know you do too.

My hope is that I can share some things with you that will help you move forward with your goals and plans whatever they may be. Health is key in all of this, and I will have some really cool stuff to share with you during the coming year.

Exercise resolutions are usually part of the New Year, but I am going to share some revelations with you about exercise that may really surprise you. Just remember in all this that in order to make it effective, you need to know just what you are trying to achieve.

To be effective, exercise should be intense and brief. The way exercise affects your hormonal system is the key. Long slow exercise raises levels of the stress hormone (cortisol) that tends to make you fatter. Hard to believe, but it’s true.

Brief and intense exercise has a positive effect on your hormone system, which results in fat burning and building of lean muscle tissue. For weight loss purposes all you need is about 15 minutes 3 times per week of brief intense exercise.

“Heavyhands” is a book that will show you how you can accomplish this and why it will work for you. It’s been out for a few years but still a great book and just as current as the day it was written!

Using this concept and following an “interval training protocol” I lost 10 lbs in two weeks with no dieting, and about 11.25 minutes of actual exercise (when you subtract rest periods) per session. This equals about 33.75 minutes of actual exercise per week!

“Heavyhands” will explain how having your hands weighted allows you to burn a lot more calories than you otherwise would. But it’s not just the calories you burn while exercising, it’s the boost in your metabolic rate that will have you burning more calories even when you are sacking out on the couch!

Now…I have some bragging to do. I attended the Boston Ballet production of the “Nutcracker” last week for the very first time and had the pleasure of watching my cousin Remy Anne in this time honored performance.

This was a very enjoyable show that seemed amazingly short to me, perhaps because it immerses you in that holiday fantasy world of dancing toy soldiers, princes and princesses, and of course “The Nutcracker.”

Remy is a pre-professional student at the Boston Ballet and she graced the stage as one of the Marzipan Shepherds. Although only time will tell, I believe she has the talent, passion, and perseverance to become a prima ballerina!

Remy comes from an artistic family, as her dad is an actor and her grandfather was a former professor at the Mass College of Art. They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I am proud of my cousin and it’s wonderful to see her develop into a great dancer.

If you have a chance to catch this wonderful show in your location, don’t hesitate, and of course it goes without saying that this is 100% OK for the youngest kids out there. They will love it for sure!

After attending the afternoon performance of the Nutcracker, we caught “The Hobbit” in IMAX.  I have never read any of Tolkien’s books, but have seen the ring trilogy and now the Hobbit.

This is a very enjoyable film, as it really immerses you in the fantasy world of “Middle Earth.” For me a good movie should draw you into the story and cause you to make an emotional connection to the characters.

“The Hobbit” did that for me and left me wanting more, just what a feature film should do. This is a film for all ages, although some scenes may be a bit rough for really young children.

Directed by Peter Jackson, and featuring a number of great actors like Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchette, Christopher Lee, Elijah Wood, and Ian McKellan as Gandalf reprised their roles.

This film ran nearly 3 hours, but seemed short to me. It was THAT engaging, and for me, this is what it’s all abut, that when  film ends you very much want the story to go on, and it does, but that will be left to the sequels!

This film scored at rating of 8.4 from IMDb.com, which pretty much says it all!

Winter can be tough on skin, with drying, windburn, and cold temperatures if you live in the northern latitudes. Remember that hydration is also important, and often you don’t get as thirsty as in summer, but you still need to drink plenty of water.

Use lip balms, and face creams to prevent against windburn and chapping. NaPCA by Twinlab is a great choice especially with added aloe to keep your skin hydrated. Remember to dress extra warmly as well, because:

heat loss=energy loss=lowered immunity from colds and flu!

I am working on what I call a “cold weather solution” but frankly there is not much research in this area for me to draw on. I will however have a recommendation for winter stress in the next newsletter, I just have to do some digging though before I can actually suggest something I am comfortable recommending to you, so stay tuned…

I hope you enjoyed Christmas with your friends and family over good food and some wished for gifts. I never made it to my destination thanks to a broken transmission linkage in my car, so here I am completely alone writing this issue of the newsletter.

Each year seems like it feels just a little less like “Christmas,” and I wish we could somehow recapture the original Christmas spirit, when everything felt special and magical.

I keep thinking that somewhere there is a place where Christmas still feels like…well…Christmas! I’d love to find it….IF it exists. Of course..it goes without saying that I will tell you all about it when I do!

I wanted to say a few things about the “Eat Right for Your Type” diet also known as the “blood type diet” by Dr. Peter D’Adamo. Of all the diet concepts out there, I feel it has had the biggest impact on my health and how I feel on a daily basis. Let me tell you why.

I didn’t use it to lose weight, as I am usually trying to keep my weight up not down. I use it to lower the level of inflammation ( and the pain it causes) in my body. For this the blood type diet has worked VERY well for me.

Most diets focus on changing eating patterns, the type of foods and the amount you eat. They don’t take your blood type into consideration. Dr. D’Adamo’s approach focuses on finding foods that are compatible with your blood type and immune system.

When foods clash with your blood type, your immune system reacts with inflammation. It effects your muscles, joints, and nervous system. I believe this is part of how you become chronically ill as you get older.

The blood type diet gives you lists of food that are beneficial, neutral, or negative for your blood type. By knowing your blood type and avoiding foods that cause problems for your type, you can rid yourself of a lot of pain and inflammation.

I am not fanatical about following it, (you don’t have to be) but I have gotten to know what foods set me off and generally avoid them. By doing this, I can honestly say I have less pain on a daily basis than I had in my 30′s!

I can now ( at age 57) go and work out even in the dead of winter with hardly any warmup, and not have a problem. Bear in mind that I couldn’t do that even in my 20′s and 30′s. I always had to do an extensive warmup or I couldn’t work out.
Those days are gone! I just don’t need the long warmups any more, because the pain is not there like when I was younger. The blood type diet concept just ROCKS!!!

This is probably the most useful diet book you will ever read, and I can’t recommend it enough. I used to take Advil like candy just to be able to work out. That was 25 years ago. I no longer use it and I feel fine, even in the cold weather.

New Years is almost here and it’s the time when people make resolutions. One of the most common is starting an exercise program. I think you know how long that usually lasts!

Most people get exercise wrong, in that they do too much, and what they actually do is not “quality” exercise. In this case, less is more, and if you do it right, you will be able to keep going with your exercise program, because it won’t be really hard.
Believe it or not, I once lost 10 lbs in two weeks with no dieting and exercising for something like 10 minutes 3 times a week. The interesting part about it was that I wasn’t even trying to lose weight, it just happened.

I’ll talk more about this next week and tell you exactly what I did and how I did it. I will explain the physiology behind effective exercise and how you should do it for the best results. This time you will be able to stick with your New Years resolution!

I trust everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving and survived
Black Friday! Personally I avoid the rush and shop during off hours, but to
each his own.  I have a couple of product recommendations for you.

First I want to remind you that there is a way you can neutralize those
cravings for sweets that surface during the holidays. I think lots of people
avoid making the commitment to eat healthier because they think it means
giving up everything they enjoy eating.

Not true….. In reality, when you can undercut the “cravings” for certain
foods, you regain control over what you put in your mouth and can begin
to get a handle on your weight issues.

You can still have and enjoy those delicious foods and deserts, but you
won’t “crave,” them. That is, you won’t be a slave to sweets, and will be
able to enjoy your them from time to time without binging on them, or
feeling compelled to eat them.

For instance, I LOVE cheesecake! However I probably only eat it once a
year. I thoroughly enjoy it when I do eat it, but I don’t crave it, and don’t
miss it during the year. It tastes just as good to me as it ever did, but I
don’t HAVE to have it, if that makes sense.

One trick I will share with you is to use an amino acid called “glutamine,”
to trick your body into thinking it’s getting sugar. You can find glutamine in
any health food store and lots of online vitamin websites.

Take a tablespoon of glutamine mixed in about 4 ounces of water. That
should do the trick. It has a mildly sweet taste, but it otherwise bland. It
should definitely help you lessen those sweet cravings and allow you to
keep sugar consumption to a minimum.

Ok, now for the recommendation I promised you. Maybe I exaggerated a
bit, but this product IS probably the best money I ever spent for a kitchen
item. It’s a the Oster Electronic Vegetable Steamer. A great product for
short money!

I like to steam my vegetables. It’s an easy and convenient way to cook
them and still keep the nutritional value in them. Since I do all my own
cooking, I want something fast and easy.

Here are the steps with this device:

1) Fill with water
2) Put vegetables in the container
3) set the timer
4) Push the button

That it! The unit steams the veggies and beeps when they are done! I
have been using this thing for over 5 years, pretty much EVERY DAY, and
it has worked flawlessly every time!

It even beeps to warn you if you forget to put the water in.
(It won’t start without water) and yes…I HAVE forgotten the water once or
twice.

It was worth every penny I paid, and it makes preparing meals so much
easier.

It would make a great Christmas gift for anyone who enjoys cooking, or
actually even for those who don’t, as the convenience factor is huge here.

I have a movie suggestion to share with you now. Being a romantic at
heart, I love movies that pull you into the storyline emotionally.
“First Knight,” starring Sean Connery Richard Gere, and Julia Ormand is
just such a film.

I watched it again recently and enjoyed it every bit as much as the first
time. This is a variation of the story of “Camelot.” This tale known and
loved over the ages, has all the elements of a classic story of love,
tragedy, betrayal and forgiveness.

It is as timeless as the day it was written and “First Knight” is in my mind
the best rendering of this story and the most enjoyable. Great
performances by Connery (who was born to play Arthur).

Julia Ormand is wonderful as Guinevere, Richard Gere is equally so as
Lancelot, and Ben Cross is convincingly evil as the rouge knight
“Prince Malagant.”

It tells the story of a woman (Guinevere), in love with two men
(Arthur and Lancelot) though in different ways. Torn by her feelings, she
struggles to remain true to her vows to Arthur, as the kingdom is
threatened by a rouge army led by the evil Malagant.

The sword fight between the evil knight Malagant and Lancelot
(played by Gere) is a stunner. It is perhaps the most electrifying sword
fight on film (my opinion).

The sword fighting scenes while nor particularly gory are perhaps a bit
rough for younger viewers, so use your discretion.

Do yourself a favor during the holidays….rent “First Knight” and enjoy it
with family and friends. I know you won’t be disappointed! Just remember
to keep the Kleenex handy…you are going to need it! _:)

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving, relaxing with family and friends. I
gathered with my extended family including my brand new 2 month old
grand nephew Morgan Joseph in New Hampshire, for a good old fashioned
Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings.

Morgan being just 2 months old has no idea of the culinary delights that
await him when he gets old enough to enjoy a real Thanksgiving dinner,
but I’m sure he will make up for it once he starts eating solid foods.

As usual I scrounged all the dark meat, and other fatty parts of the turkey
nobody else eats, but didn’t gain any weight, as I skipped the sugary
desserts. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, because it revolves
around eating (something I love to do!)

When I was very young my parents would actually let my sister and I have
some wine with the meal because it was a “special occasion.” To this day
although I enjoy a drink now and again, I don’t overindulge because my
folks never made alcohol a mysterious and alluring thing “for adults only.”

Ok, now I am about to share another little secret that you will love, and it’s
called “Aqua Gel!”  First let me tell you about Willard’s Water, from which
Aqua Gel is made. Years ago (I think it was in the 1930′s) old Doc Willard
was in his lab trying to come up with a better solvent for his workshop.

What he stumbled onto was a way of chemically making water…well….
”wetter” for lack of a better term. This was an additive (the exact formula
is a trade secret) which when mixed with water or other substances tended
to make them more effective.

A host of products were developed using the Willard’s Water additive and
one of them was Aqua Gel. This is great for dry skin, burns, chapping, and
any other skin problem that involve loss of moisture, as it also contains
aloe vera extract.

Willard’s Water works great on burns as well, so “Aqua Gel” can be used
for minor burns (major ones require a doctors care obviously). I don’t have
an affiliate relationship with the makers of the product so I don’t make any
money recommending it.

I just love the product and use it for a variety of things, especially when the

When I started this newsletter I promised to include things of an
inspirational nature. What I want to share with you now is a scene from the
last “Rocky” film that Sylvester Stallone made. Yeah it’s a “guy film” but the
lessons are valid for anyone.

In the scene he explains to his son the secret of success and winning in
life. He does it in a very profound way using boxing as a metaphor for life’s
battles telling the son that “It’s not how hard you can hit, it’s how hard you
can get hit and still keep moving forward.” “That’s how winning is done!”

That lesson is something my own father tried to instill in me over the years.
I wish I had learned that when he was still alive. I spent so much of my life
believing that to succeed you had to be perfect. That belief that I had was
all wrong!

All you really need is a goal and the willingness to work toward it no matter
what the obstacles are. All people that achieve success do that….without
exception.

Let me wrap this up by mentioning a couple of issues that people tend to
have as they get older, which is low energy and lack of cold tolerance.  
There are several products that I will be reviewing in the near future to
address these issues.

I will soon have some recommendations for nutritional products that will
boost your energy levels safely and effectively. Cold tolerance is related
to changes that occur to your nervous system with age.

That will take a bit more research on my part because I want to be certain
that what I recommend is both effective and safe. I promise the wait will be
